Re: So, George died.

  • Psst...fishy, could you read my thread up there? I know it's long and you probably don't wanna, but I think you might be able to say something to...I don't know...just say something intelligent. I need your work brain right now.

  • I grew up in NY and as a kid I was a HUGE Yankee fan... but then I grew up and just saw him and the team as being bullies -- with all the money invested in the team and the huge contracts, it was sickening.  Sad a man lost his life -- he was definitely a character and for better, or worse, and known to millions.
  • What's with the hating?  Reading this makes me feel like I'm stuck in a rotary near Fenway.

It's a sad day for the Yankees.  The man did so much for the team, baseball and NYC.  I just listened to local radio and the impact isn't just on team.  He's affected so many people in the city down to the police commissioner and all of us who grew up knowing that you rooted for the Yankees as your local team.
  • I like the Yankees, but I think it's more that I hate the Redsox

Huge Yankee fan right here Laughing Was never a big fan of the man, i was way more upset over Bob Shepard, he was a really nice guy. I do feel bad for his family though. This year i have lost two people i was very close with, very suddenly. It sucks.

  • I think it might have been Ben Affleck who said "I would rather say 'I worship you, Satan' instead of cheer for the New York Yankees."

I'm not really a fan of Mr. Affleck - nor do I feel THAT strongly about my Yankee hatred.  But I'm within that ballpark.

So who's going to buy all the championships now that George is gone?

I really loathe that sort of attitude.  It's stated  as if the Yankees don't give back to MLB and that every other team out there has no money which is far from the truth.

His son... he's pretty much been running the team for about a year now as it is.

And, yeah, the whole, "he's rich and bought his team the championships" is really lame. Get yourself a millionaire to buy your team and stop being jealous. ;)

Would you like to talk about every OTHER major league player who took them too?  Barry Bonds?  Mark McGuire? Jose Canseco?  You seriously want to zero in one one of the Yankee players who took them when so MANY others took them too??  Puhleeze.

You don't have to like them, but spare me the "Yankees buy their championships" sob story.

In the last ten years, they've won 2.    And the Red Sox (who don't exactly lack funds either) won two as well.   And they got there becuase they PLAYED well.
  • A-roid is not the only roider on the team - past or present.  Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte, Chuck Knoblach, Sheffield.  I think the Yankees probably have more roiders than any other team.

The whole rich-team thing isn't really a sob story, though.  It's fact.  To me there is nothing more obnoxious than a Yankee fan getting in my face about why they loooooove the Yanks by saying "27 (or is it 28?) rings?  Booyeah!"  Uh, yeah they've won plenty of championships.  They're also the richest team in baseball and can buy whatever talented or juiced player they want.

And one of only three teams in baseball with a captain - which is the most pompous and arrogant thing I've ever heard of.

If you're a New Yorker and you're a Yanks fan - whatever.  Great.  It's the bandwagon fans I can't stand.

Joe Mauer could have made twice or three times more money with the Yankees than he is with the Twins - and yet he's staying in Minnesota.  Call it hometown loyalty or call it dodging the evil baseball empire - the end result is the same.
    panther
  • Yes - the end result is the same.

I've been living in CT my entire life - and the early years were spent living much closer to the NYC end.  You rooted for the Yankees even in the mid '80s when they were going through their slump and sucking like the Knicks.

It's the bandwagon of Yankee hatred I can't stand.  Sure it's annoying to hear the "sore winner" but it's just as annoying if not worse to hear people say, "Oh yeah?!  Well, if I*my team* had your team's money I'd win too!"  And as someone in CT, I hear that most often from a Red Sox fan - and their team isn't exactly lacking in funds.  In fact, they're number TWO in team value.    And well, it's a poor mechanic who blames his tools.

Still feel like complaining that *your* team isn't one of those two?  Here's the rest of the top ten list as of 2005:
    3 - NY Mets
    4 - LA Dodgets
    5 - Seattle Mariners
    6 - Chicago Cubs
    7 - Phillies
    8 - ATL Braves
    9 - SF Giants
    10 - STL Cardinals

Oh, and Tampa Bay was at the bottom of the list and they made it to the World Series in 2008.
  • Red Sox fans complain that they don't have any money?  Whaaaaaat?

My team still isn't on that list.  We try to focus a little more on talent than money I guess (at least the people I run with do).

What is with Tamba Bay lately?  They really seem to have their shiit together.  I'm kinda pissed at my Twins - they've been number one in their division all season long and have been really sucking ass lately.  I think they're something like 3 or 4 games back right now.  WTF?

Honestly though my favorite thing about baseball is the unpredictability.  You really never know what's going to happen - no matter who's playing where or where all the money is.  That's why I find it interesting to watch.
    panther
  • As a Sox fan, I don't really like George.

As someone living in Tampa, Fl (George's home) his is a great man, he has done so much for the community  and surrounding areas.

So basically I'm torn.  All about the Benj as for the Rays, they will complain they can't win and no one comes to there games because the Yankees have strong ties in Tampa, ie spring training, Steinbrenner. Oh, and don't forget us Sox fans... So poor rays fans. I also agree baseball is so unpredicatable, in May everyone was calling our season dead because we were 5 games out.
