  • Not a very approachable community, eh... :P
  • By the way, this is a relatively small flame, but.... It seems like every time Mery wants to compare all the worldly things she can get/experience in LA, she chooses to pick Iowa and Des Moines. This isn't the sticks. I may not see Tom Cruise (I might miss him - I'd tower over Mr. Elfin Magic) or Colin Ferrell walking down the street, but that's quite alright.

This is a pretty damn fabulous place to live, and the suburbs/city are consistently rated one of the best places to raise kids/work/live/etc. (Just please remind me of that in December and January).

There's only one thing I can't find here that I was able to find in my "large city" on the east coast, and that's because it is a regional item.

  • Fishie, you had me laughing hard enough for H to say, "What is so funny?" with that picture.

I really haven't been around enough to catch anything flame-worthy. But I will jump on the bandwagon of being really tired of the Heels v P2 thing. I have always liked Heels, and with P2, I'm back and forth, but it's making my brain explode.

Sorry, Missy. I guess I just pick a traditional mid-western all-American values type place. I know it's not the sticks, and I get that it's probably quite diverse now. I haven't been to Des Moines, but FI has family in Northeastern Iowa. Even though I grew up near a medium/large city near the east coast, the town I grew up in was rather small, so I'm not exactly a "big city snob." I promise. And I realize Des Moines is quite large.

And I really don't want to be snobbish about where I live. I hope I don't usually come off as, "Well, in LOS ANGELES we have CELEBRITIES and I see them everyday!" I know I posted about a celebrity sighting once or twice, but that's because I'm as awestruck by them as anyone. LA is kind of a weird place. Not always in a good way.

Ditto about the heels/p2 thing.  Seriously guys, give it a rest.  It's tired and it makes you both look ridiculous.   There's plenty of people I could do without here, but I can manage to co-exist in a thread with them without hair pulling and poking with sticks.

Agreed. Semantics aside, if "hate" was the wrong word, substitute it with a more accurate description of your feelings towards children and the point still stands.  Lpstl was pointing out that certain negative stereotypes of certain parenting styles were untrue.  I don't think her words lose value because she has a child.

I don't view it as the acts of some, Mandy. It is the systemic hyprocisy and misogyny, rampant throughout the whole entity, that offends me. Do other religions have their corrupt individuals? Absolutely, and you'll get no argument from me there.

ETA: How can you NOT define Catholicism by the acts of its ruling hierarchy?

sara- I understand what you are saying. I have my own internal struggles with the church. I don't want to get into a religious debate because I know that neither of us will "win." I completely respect your opinion, but as a Catholic, I hope you understand that I would find the statement "makes me glad I'm not a Catholic" offensive.  That's all I'm saying.

<div>Hey, I don't mean to step in where it's none of my business, but I've been in conversations like this before and I think I get where the misunderstanding is coming from.  I can see you interpreting "Makes me glad I'm not a Catholic" as "Makes me glad I'm not YOU," since you're a Catholic.  But maybe an interpretation that will make things clearer is "Makes me glad I'm not a part of the Catholic Church."  Sorry if I am misinterpreting things too, it's just that sometimes points of disagreements like this are hard to pinpoint and smooth over when you're too close to the issue.</div>

my point is, her words don't GAIN power because she has a child, see? she's not any more qualified to debate the finer points of attachment parenting than i am. she's more qualified to speak on the experience of being a parent, but that's not what we're talking about here.  i may have mistakenly put something on the list that shouldn't have been there, due to my typing in the middle of a bunch of other things i was doing. but pretty much what i said is true.

Dude, you brought me having a child into this, not me. I said my parenting experience and choices have nothing to do with this. You were stereotyping, plain and simple, over and over, and defending it. To suggest that you just accidentally wrote the same BS over and over is an epic stretch. I'm honestly surprised, I never took you for the backpedaling kind.

  • This fff is teh suck. I havent said that before, so that is saying a lot. I only see four themes:

    1. p2 vs heels bickering
(team heels, mostly because she's a republican, so totally irrelevant to the 'argument')

    2. divorce is easy vs divorce is hard bickering
(team divorce process is hard mentally, emotionally, & legally, but some people see it as a first option, rather than last)

    3. catholicism sucks vs catholicism doesnt bickering
(team catholic doesnt suck, I was catholic but converted to methodist, so I don't agree with all their beliefs. Maybe its my methodist beliefs that make me feel like the church and the religion are more separate, the church hierarchy may have corruption in places, but the religion and most people in it are good people)

    4. jill is a parenting expert and doesnt hate kids vs jill doesnt hates children
(I'm gonna have to go with team jill hates/strongly dislikes children and that would lead me to believe she is not an expert on parenting techniques)
