S/O Names: A Poll

I just did one of those stupid things on FB where it told me how popular my name was for my birth year. Apparently it ranks 163rd for 1979. I have always been the only one in my class with my name. I used to hate it, but now it's okay. I'd never name a kid my name, though.

SO...tell us this:

1. Do you like your name? (you can share or not share what it is if you want)
2. Have you met a lot of people in life with your name?
3. Are you named after anyone? (family, celebs, etc.)

    1. Do you like your name? (you can share or not share what it is if you want)
It is better than Lelia Suzanne, which was a front runner on my parent's list..

    2. Have you met a lot of people in life with your name?
I went to preschool with a girl with the exact same first, middle and Last name. Our fathers were both named Larry. They had to distinguish us by her mom's name. She grew up to be quite a stuck up bitch.
I also have a distant cousin with the same first and last name. She lived about a mile away from us and we went to elem. & HS together.

Apparently Sarah Elizabeth is a common combination because I know at least 5

    3. Are you named after anyone? (family, celebs, etc.)
    Family.

  • Roxy - My best friend's name is Amanda. I graduated from HS with 8 Amandas (out of 200 students.) Freshman year of college, I lived next door in the dorm to 2 Amandas. There was another Amanda down the hall. There are a lot of Amandas around here!

  •      1.   I don't like my first name at all.. I don't know why I just hate it..

         2.   It's not very popular, I graduated with one other that shared my name.

        3.  My dad's cousin's wife has my first name and since they have the same last name she now has my last name. Thankfully, middle names are different and she's like in her 60's.. I only found out we shared the same name when our library accounts got mixed up when I was in middle school..
I can't say I'm named after any one particular, but I do share my name with a popular singer. :-D

  • 1. Do you like your name? (you can share or not share what it is if you want)  Yes, I like my name.  It's Alicia and people usually pronounce it correctly...

    2. Have you met a lot of people in life with your name?  Not too many who spell it the same way.

    3. Are you named after anyone? (family, celebs, etc.)  I'm named after a girl my mom went to high school with.  She really liked the name.
  • 1. Do you like your name? (you can share or not share what it is if you want)
I've never ever been called by my legal first name or middle name. I've always been called Laine (but it's pronounced Lanie ... yes, My mom was one of those people), which is short for my middle name Elaine.

I used to hate it because of the hassle, now it's grown on me

    2. Have you met a lot of people in life with your name?
I have never met another person with my name

    3. Are you named after anyone? (family, celebs, etc.)
My legal first name (which I've never gone by) is after my great grand mother who shares my birthday.

  • 1. Do you like your name? (you can share or not share what it is if you want)  Well, I like it for other people, but not for me.  My parents named me after my great-grandmother's long-term live in nurse, and my grandmother.  I hate having other peoples' names.  (Elizabeth Anne)

    2. Have you met a lot of people in life with your name?  Tons.

    3. Are you named after anyone? (family, celebs, etc.)   Sorry, got to that answer above.

I don't mind my name, the only problem is I was given a nickname, so people are confused when they realize my name isn't "Michelle". 2.  There was one Shelly that was a grade behind me, she was weird. 3. No.  However, my mom thinks "Diane" is the name of an ex-girlfriend of my Dad's.  He picked that name.  Thank goodness my mom picked "Shelly" my dad wanted to call me "Janice."

  • DUDE Laine I have been calling you the wrong name for way too long. Ha why didn't you say anything? Maybe I never said your name to your face? Anyway I just assumed it was pronounced Lane. Fail.

I used to have a dance teacher named Lanie.

  • My best friend has an Auntie Shelly, short for Michelle. I've always heard Shelly used as a nickname for Michelle..well, until now. :)
    image
  • It is sometimes, but a lot of times its a nickname for "Michelle".  There were a couple Michelles in my class who would go by "shelly"

Nick has an aunt named Michelle, and she goes by "Shel" which is what my family calls me, and that is all sorts of confusing.

  • I should add that my number one name related pet peeve is that my last name is also a female first name, so people are always calling me by my last name.  It's annoying and I feel like a jerk for correcting them.

I can't wait to change it.

1 yes I like my name original, but not out there (although I was shocked to see it at #66 for my birth year). Cynthia

2 yes, mostly adults and a few my age with it, but most go by Cindy

3 my middle name is my grandmonther's middle name and she was soooo mad at my mom for giving it to me. (our family makes fun of it) but the rumor is my brother gave me my first name.

  • 1. Do you like your name? (you can share or not share what it is if you want)

    - It's Kelly and I'm indifferent to it. Hardly anyone actually uses it, and whenever someone who knew/knows me by another name finds out, I usually get the "But you don't SEEM like a Kelly!" Well, you didn't SEEM like a dumba$$ two seconds ago, but here we are.

    2. Have you met a lot of people in life with your name?

    - I think it's pretty popular in my age range. There were quite a few in my grade in school, and it's not uncommon to run into a Kelly. Lots of different spellings, though.

    3. Are you named after anyone? (family, celebs, etc.)

    - I'm not.

  • ggmae--I love the name Gretchen!
    Expat--is it Ah-LEE-see-ah or Ah-LEESH-ah?

    Guess I'll answer--
    1. It's okay. (Rhonda) I like that it's not completely odd, but I've also always been the only one in my class all the way through college. Only once was there confusion when a girl named Rhonda from another school killed herself and when I came back from summer break, some people were surprised I was alive. =)

    2. Interestingly enough, the first Rhonda I ever met (outside of family, see below) was one of my nursing professors and advisor. Every Rhonda I've met since has been a nurse. I used to work with two others (one has my same middle name) and I work with one now.

    3. No, my mom said she just picked it from a book. We have a distant cousin down south who has a daughter my age-ish with my same first and middle name and she swears my mom named me after her daughter. Too bad my mom barely knows this cousin nor did she know she had daughter a year older than me until a family reunion when I was 12.

  • 1. Do you like your name? (you can share or not share what it is if you want) I'm ok with my name. It's "old-fashioned" but not obsolete and nothing along the lines of Bertha or Belulah or anything like that.

    2. Have you met a lot of people in life with your name? Nope. I've met a few and they're usually about 20 years older than me. I don't think I've ever met someone my age with my name. I know there's one other woman with my name about my age that Dh's crowd knows, but I've never met her.

    3. Are you named after anyone? (family, celebs, etc.) Yes. I'm named after my great-grandfather. Obviously not the same name, but same initial. Jewish tradition calls for naming for someone deceased who was important to the parents, sometimes the full name, sometimes just the initial depending on how you interpret it.

I've been doing family genealogy and it's really cool to see the same names popping up every other or third generation.

  • Heh, T, don't worry about it. A lot of people call me Lane for short, so I don't really notice if someone I know uses it. If you were saying Lane all the time I didn't notice :).

Gretchen, my first name is Sarah.

People are always telling me they knew a Lanie/Laney/Laine at some point, but I've never met one, which is just kind of odd.

Ehh, it's okay.  I like that it's a little less common, I suppose.

    2. Have you met a lot of people in life with your name?
Just a few, but most spell my name with an H (Theresa) as opposed to the way I spell it.

    3. Are you named after anyone? (family, celebs, etc.)
Mother Teresa... I kid you not.  My parents are Catholic (with a million exclamation points) and gave me a namesake that I could never live up to.  Thanks, Mom and Dad.

  • Oh, and this concept of calling someone a name that's not even close to their first or middle name is unfortunately an epic retarded family tradition. I have the following people in my family:

    Leslie Grace = Lacey
    Mary Lellyette = Mallie
    Sarah Huntley = Sallie
    Barbara Joe = Bobbie

And people are giving me shiit for naming my son Xavier... and actually calling him Xavier.
