I didn't think it was true until today

Re: I didn't think it was true until today

  • Noodle knows how to do more sh*t around the house than I do.  He's the one who cleans (since he's the neat freak) and he makes a mean shrimp pasta.

  • Also, in all fairness to your H, there have been an increase in the number of calls for people who have run out of gas. With gas prices rising like they are, people are trying to use every drop in their tanks and sometimes get the math wrong.

  • Every week I'm driving in fear of running out of gas, because I try to fill up where it's cheaper, instead of by work, which is more expensive.

We brought those microwavable packets of Indian food, boil-in-a-bag rice, and pitas with peanut butter, so we ended up eating cold chickpeas and lots of pitas, so we didn't starve.  But I was like, this is your idea of fun?
  • Well I did not mean to offend anyone or their husband. As a PP said, I just needed to vent and thought that maybe others had a vent that they wanted to share.

  • Nugget yeah but you make a wicked mac & cheese. So there's that.

cengle you should come camping with us. No one does camping like we do. There's usually champagne, wine, cheeses and meats, and in the mornings Mr. Panda makes a wicked breakfast of scrambled eggs, pancakes and bacon or sausage. We are spoiled wrotten campers, yes we are.

Manda: I could probably do that type of camping. But H would insist on bringing our air mattress with us. We're both high maintenance campers. :)

I totally agree. Being in Chicago, with the highest gas prices in the country, we go to Indiana to get a small break on gas. That was what he was trying to do but he did a ton of driving yesterday. He could have gone to the gas station, that is still in Indiana, but closer to our house. He was literally trying to save 6 cents per gallon.

  • Panda, your camping style sounds very similar to ours.  It helps that we acquired a '69 Barth a couple years ago.  It's like having a kitchen on wheels!

This is jerky behavior - not necessarily male behavior.  There are plently of women who wouldn't do things if a man was around to do it for them.

  • Have I had ex-boyfriends who even when they left home still brought laundry home to their mommies and expected me to do their housework? Yes, absolutely, but I now have a self-sufficient FI who does our household chores on his own and takes care of both of us. He's had his moments, but half the time I'd forget to put the trash out or deposit checks if he didn't text me a friendly reminder in the morning. We all have our moments and it's normal to want to vent about it, but to accuse everyone else's men of being the same way isn't the way to go.

Can I come? Our idea of camping is mac and cheese and hot dogs for dinner and muffins and juice for breakfast. I haven't figure out how to cook at a campsite even though we have a stove and everything.

This is how we "camp" as well. I'm a big fan.

  • When we camp, we almost always do panckaes at least one morning.  We have full dinners - no burgers and hot dogs every night for us.  My uncle built this rotisserie thing to cook whole chickens and stuff over the campfire.  It's awesome.

  • Cengle, we camp with an air mattress AND a fan. Gotta love those electrical hookups.

  • matilda, actually yes you CAN come with us. I think we're heading up to Shenandoah at the end of June. :-D We were supposed to go this weekend but I made other plans with some crazy women I know from the interwebz. I hope none of them make a skinsuit out of me.

  • Sweet! We haven't been camping since early last year and I really want to go. I'll be extra special nice to you on Saturday to further confirm that I'm not a skinsuit making person.

  • So does your kind of camping NOT involve carrying 10 gallons of water in my backpack while running through clouds of mosquitoes and black flies?  If so, I'm in.

I'm getting really excited. I'm going to the EU embassy open house thing earlier in the day too, my Saturday is going to be awesome.
  • We still do tents and hot dogs. I swear though, last summer in Shenandoah it was kind of rainy and a little breezy/cool. We opened the "windows" on the tent and let the air blow right through. Between the cool breeze and the sound of the trees rustling, I don't think I have ever slept better in my life. Actually, just thinking about it is making me sleepy.

Now Delaware Beach in November, that was a whole other story. I don't think I've ever slept WORSE but that might have something to do with being colder than a popsicle.
  • I hate camping with the fire of a thousand suns.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: I didn't think it was true until today : My experience with adult men has been that many of them (if not most) lack some of the basic adult survival skills I (and most if not all women I know) take for granted.  Too many of their mothers took care of this stuff for them when they were growing up while most women I know were taught from an early age that they would be responsible for taking care of general life stuff as adults. Why do something yourself if there is a very good chance there will always be a woman around to do it for you?

I dislike this statement.  A lot.

My H's mother did a lot of stuff for him when he was living at home (his laundry, the cooking, etc.), but when we moved in together, he was definitely on par with me in a lot of ways -- paying his own bills, balancing his checkbook, cooking just as well if not better than I could, etc.  True, his laundry skills took a little developing -- he had to learn not to cram the machines -- but I wouldn't say at all that we wern't equal.  TBH, I think he was more prepared for living alone than I was.

  • My FI cooks, cleans, and does laundry because I'm a lazy piece of shiit.
  • My H grew up taking care of himself.  He's done his own laundry and cooked for himself and worked since he was 7.  I don't think he needs me to make him a damn sandwich or remind him to put gas in his car like a big boy.

I want to go camping with Manda!  I'll bring extra champagne, cheese and prosciutto to share.  :)

Since we've been married, I think H has developed learned helplessness.  He was living on his own for almost 20 years before we married, and suddenly now he can't get ready for work without me helping him along.  And other than the roast pig he does during special occasions, he does not cook.  At all.  Or clean.  I recognize that most of this behavior is my fault.

My father, on the other hand, does the dishes most nights, washes and irons his dress shirts (my mother used to forget stuff at the drycleaners for months, so he took up the habit years ago), and can cook at least a week's worth of meals if my mother is unavailable to do so.
