S/O: how much was your engagement ring?

24

Re: S/O: how much was your engagement ring?

  • My engagement ring was $3,000 and the band is $500. I know because I was there when we purchased everything. FI and I both don't like surprises and it was really fun to shop together. He actually picked out the setting and center stone himself. I was surprised how well he did.  Does anyone know how much appraisals generally cost? And blueyed228, I'd LOOOVE to see a pic, sounds beautiful!

My mother's ring was purchased for around $4-5K and is now worth over $10K. So I don't know if that's appreciation, or what.

No, that is not appreciation, that is the difference between purchase price and what the appraised value is.  Like I said, we bought my ring in February and it appraised for a little more than double in April.

Unless you have the Hope diamond, diamonds are not an appreciating asset.  You don't have to take my word for it.  Go to pricescope.com or any trusted sight about diamonds, no one would tell you that you should "invest" in a diamond.

So true...I think people get confused because they pay $X for the ring but then it appraises for $Y. They traditionally don't lose their value, so they are a better investment than a car or stocks. Plus, over that last few decades the general cost of diamonds has risen about %10 a year, due to trade issues and economic issues. the fact of the matter is that if you ever try to sell it, you'll never get the cost put into it. An appraisal is the value, but not necessarily what someone would by it for. But then again why would you want to sell it, right?

Mine cost around $14,000 to purchase...haven't had it appraised yet. Should probably get on that.
  • My rings were bought as a set and totalled around $5,000.

  • It's so rude to talk about E ring prices. Don't you people know there are brides out there that have to sell soda cans just to have a wedding!
    image
  • Don't know, don't care. I love my ring, whether it cost $5 or $5,000
  • I don't know.  I know the appraisal value because I added it to my homeowners insurance, but I don't know how much he paid for it.  I think it would be a little weird for me to say how much it is worth, so I won't.
  • We are friends with our jeweler so i know he got a great price. My ring is appraised at $9k, it would have cost him about $8k but he got it for $4k.  It's a .90 carat nearly flawless with perfect color center stone, and pave halo with half an eternity band, it totals 1.1 carat.  My wedding band is a half eternity(.50 carat) and cost us $1k.  He had it made to look like one I showed him in a magazine, and I love it!

It's insured but FI takes care of all that stuff so I didn't have to deal with it.

Why is that rude? The prices are on everything in the jewelry stores any was. Its not like they hid those just in case someone can't afford them. No one on here is saying their ring is better because it cost such and such amount.

I'm sorry if some people have to sell soda cans to have a wedding and other don't; that royally sucks. But I won't feel bad because my fiance works really hard and could afford the ring he got me. If your fiance put thought into the ring the cost shouldn't be a problem and hearing what others' cost shouldn't matter to you.

Oh, sorry...tone is really hard to interpret on here sometimes. I wasn't sure cause the soda can thing is actually true. Plus, I'm a little defensive on the subject cause a friend of a friend aked where my FI got my ring and went a looked up how much it cost (before I even knew). They then proceeded to tell me it was way to expensive, and my fiance wasn't very smart for making that purchase; a conversation that lasted about 5 mintues. My bad.
  • because it's relatively anonymous here i will say that the general budget i've gleaned from my SO is roughly in the 100k range and i'm embarassed to even type it because i know that's it's completely and utterly obscene.

i would never share that with anyone in real life except my absolute inner circle because i don't think anyone needs to know those details.

  • My ring was $900 and the center stone was $5,000 (1.20ct radiant certified cut)

We spend $15 each on matching titanium wedding bands (the color is suprisingly similar to my 14k white gold engagement ring)

I'd only spend that if I had a home and car that was fully paid for.  No debt of any kind.  And a couple of years worth of living expenses saved up.  Even then, I'd be wary.
  • Meh, if he can afford a $100K ring, i don't see a problem with it.  I mean, if I was marrying LeBron or something, he better pony up more than that :).
  • My E- ring was a little over $17,000, I only know this because he handed me the GIA and insurance info. And my wedding band was $1,200 on sale.

not engaged yet (depending on your definition) - from conversations, it's been made clear that that number is well within the range he's thinking of spending.  i recently found out that one of his watches is worth that much.  i asked him if it did his laundry for him... lol.

i know it's an obnoxious amount but it's what he can afford.  and yes, the houses and cars are all fully paid for and our future expenses secure.  my girlfriend has suggested splitting that amount amongst the ring, earrings and a necklace which sounds like a good idea.

  • just to clarify, in my first marriage, we couldn't even afford an engagement ring so i've been at both ends of the spectrum and i know that both are just as wonderful as long as you're in love.
