Anyone ever make a Turducken?

My aunt is coming out to visit next week, and mentioned making some crazy meal, like a turducken.  Well that's all H had to hear because he's been asking me to make him one forever.  I've found a few recipes online, but don't know how crazy it will be.

So has anyone ever made one?  Do you have a good recipe for it?  Thanks!

I love the idea of eating this, but I would NEVER attempt to make it.  I can't even wrap my head around how you'd get the thing inside the other thing inside the other thing.

I just had to look that up... I can't imagine ever coming up with that idea in the first place.

It looks like it'd be good though.  But I can't help you.

My aunt is a really good cook, so I will be leaving all of that stuffing and stuff up to her.  I'm more of the drinks and sides girl.

Dude, if you pull this off... you should AW the hell out of it.

Haha I definitely will AW it.

Ditto Robot. We have one every year around the holidays, but I would never in the hell attempt to make it. I'll buy 'em, but I have no interest trying to stuff a bird with another bird, then another bird. I love to cook, but I don't have the patience or skill for that.

Oh, actually... I remember seeing a Turducken with all the birds put together, but not cooked at a market near me.  One of those fancy-schmancy markets, y'know?  So maybe you could find something like that.

My friend made one for Christmas this past year.  She ordered it from the Cajun Grocer.

It came to her with the birds already stuffed into each other and seasoned so all she had to do was cook it.

I would love to find one that's already put together.  I should start searching.  We need to go buy the turkey soon if not so it can thaw out.  We also need one for this Sunday because H has decided he wants to make a deep fried turkey for Easter, which also means we need to go buy a deep fryer.  I think he is trying to turn Easter into the Thanksgiving he missed.

I have friends that do a turducken every year for Thanksgiving.  I've never helped them do it, but none of them are that amazing in the kitchen, so I have a feeling it may be easier than it looks.

This year, they decided to have the KFC "Double down" sandwich as the inspiration for the turducken(clicky).  As a result, the duck was wrapped in bacon, the turkey was deep fried, and there was a cheese sauce to put on the top.  It was amazing.  I am looking for pics, but can't find any.

YES.  My friend Jess and I made one last Christmas.

It took us 24 hours to put everything together, the brine and all that jazz, and eight hours to cook.

Let me see if I can find a picture.

Ok baystate, you are making me eat my words on the difficulty.  My friends always played it off as not that big of a deal...but my guess is they downplayed it.

After being roasted.  We didn't have any cooking twine so we used skewers to hold it closed.

Meg that sounds amazing, and about a week's worth of calories.

Thanks for that link Shortee.  I have it saved.  I have a feeling H and my aunt will both say they want to do it from scratch.  I'm pretty sure I'll just drink and watch them try to figure it out.

It is not impossible.  The boning is the worst part, and I have to confess that I didn't do that, my friend Jess (who is badass in every way) did the de-boning.  I made the brine.  We had to soak each de-boned bird in the brine overnight.  Then we got up at 7 AM to make the stuffing, stuff each bird, put the whole thing together, and fasten it all up for the roasting.

I'm sure it was a week's worth of calories.  And then it was followed up by cherpumple pie. (<-clicky again)

So it's no surprise that I needed to go on a diet, post-holidays.

Man Bay, that sounds ridiculously time consuming.  I figure we will probably cook it on Thursday next week, and H has overnight duty on Wed., so maybe my aunt and I can put it together then.

I have never heard of it before. But it sounds really, really delicious.

That I did, Tikibot.  That I did.

ETA: DNB, my only suggestion would be to make sure you have help to put the damn thing in and take it out of the oven.  Our turducken was incredibly heavy after we stuffed each bird.  I think we had a 17 lb. turkey, an 8 lb. duck, and a 5 lb. chicken?  Something like that?  But even without the bones, the stuffing added a lot of weight, and it was too heavy for just one of us to move it around.

The whole thing got eaten though.  Mainly because we were at a party at her house, and her brother and all his friends ended up eating whatever was left over.

I love all the icing in that first turducken pic.

Frankly, the bacon and cheese one sounds scary.

Thanks for the heads up Bay.  Yeah it's going to be a ton of work and a ton of food.  We need about 20 more people to come over.

I am so confused at how this works.  I honestly thought until today that a Turducken was a special breed of turkey......not actually birds stuffed with birds.

Haha Stacks clearly you don't have an H who asks probably once a month for me to make it.  I don't think I would know what it was if it weren't for that.

Okay I have to go to the dentist to get my chipped tooth fix.  Yay me.  Thanks for the ideas!

They sell them frozen and already assembled...all you have to do is bake the sucker. I have wanted to make one of these since FOREVER, but I'm just too lazy to do it outside of a special occasion and when holidays come along I always buy the traditional turkey.

In a million years I'd never try to assemble one myself, but I bought one online from this place for Thanksgiving last year. The duck essence permeates the other meats, so it's good, if you like duck (which I don't, so I won't be doing it again). I don't know what kind of expedited delivery they charge. It took a couple of weeks to get it last fall.

It was a big hit, and you can also order a pig stuffed with a turkey stuffed with a duck stuffed with a chicken from them.

Are you planning on deep frying the turducken? Because I don't think that would work.
