Book club?

Is anyone interested in having a book club, or are you in one somewhere else (online)? :)

Re: Book club?

  • I definitely wouldn't mind doing it, and I feel like a lot of people would be into it.  So many people loved reading HG and having all teh discussions about it.  I think it would be hard to find books that enough people haven't read, but I definitely would be open to doing it.

I would be open to it too. I've thought about joining a book club IRL but the ones I find are always reading stuff I've already read.
  • I'm kind of in one, but I've yet to make it to a meeting.  My schedule sucks.  I wouldn't mind doing one, but it's hard - I tend away from mainstream stuff, and while I wouldn't mind being directed toward some things I wouldn't normally read, I'm always very hesitant.  I shouldn't be, but I am.

  • Yeah, or not interested in.  MN just started a book club, and I had no interest in the first 3 books they picked so I'm not doing it.

  • I think we should vote to pick a monthly book to read and then have a big discussion about it.

Book Clubs don't work for me.  I tried to go along with the Spring Book Club on TN but I hate being "told" what to read.  I read according to my mood and I was getting really mad: UGH I have to read a book with a FLOWER on the cover when I really want to read something about the Holocaust.

    I'm weird I guess.

Yeah I am a snob about my books. I always think I do not like romance or drama, but then when I read one I end up liking it. But until it starts getting good I get all grumpy and say "I hate (insert genre) books!!!!" But I like the idea of choosing books and then polling to see which one everyone would be most interested. But then who is in charge of choosing?
  • Ok well how about every throw out some idea of books on their "to be read" list? Then we can vote?

  • I would do this.  I'm always looking for new books to read, and I'll give just about anything a try.

I'd be interested.  I've always wanted to join one but don't know anyone locally that I'd want to read/discuss books with.
  • We could also do 2 different books each month of differnet genres and people could choose which book they want, or do both.

  • I do like the voting idea, I've seen other boards do it that way and it seems to work just fine.

    DNB, I think that's a good idea.
  • I think I'd be interested as long as we had the option to skip a month if it was something we really weren't interested in reading.

  • I know Bree, I posted in that thread too but it's kinda sitting dead. Plus I *know* ya'll over here, and it would be fun to get a discussion going :)

NO! Hlq, you can NEVER miss a month! *glares menacingly*
    Cool
  • Yes!  I'm on the Nest Book Club, and I sort of do the Spring Book Challenge (only I read a book and then see where it would fit in on the list, so I don't know if that's sort of cheating?).  But I like DNB's idea of picking two books of different genres and then getting our pick of which one we want to read.

[QUOTE]I've heard that The Help is a great 'book club' book because it has a lot of topics that are good discussion starters.

<div>See, the problem with that book is half the readers here have already read it.  </div>

  • I think that sounds great, let's pick two books.  Everyone should start suggesting titles of books that they think will generate good conversation.  We should let this thread go on a few pages or until it dies and then make a poll.  We need to pick the time frame we have to read the book or books and pick the discussion date.

  • I'm so not mainstream, but I think given the option of a couple books in different genres, I could live with it.  I'm just so picky.

I would be one of those who has not read "The Help" and knows nothing about it.  I wouldn't call myself a book snob, because I don't know if you can be a book snob if you avoid things like NYT best-seller lists like the plague.

Yeah, I haven't read The Help yet but I think everyone else has. I'm really intrigued by In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson which was brought up yesterday. It's kind of expensive on Kindle though, like $13.

I have The Host, I am Legend, and My Sisters Keeper on my kindle waiting for me. I am sure most people have read some of these but I am lame and would rather read Harry Potter for the 20th time before I read something new. :) I am reading Water for Elephants now and just finished the first four in a series but I forget what it is called, I think it is called Mercy Thompson series or something, they are young adult and very easy reading, and they are pretty good. Not the best, but entertaining.

    Edit- for spelling oops.
  • I found an offbeat book at Barnes & Noble last night. I went to get the new Erik Larson book (sold out, had to order) - In the Garden of the Beasts.

It's called Vlad: The Last Confession by C.C. Humphreys. The reviews I saw online while I was waiting in the store were pretty good.

I also got Isaac's Storm, which is an earlier Erik Larson book about a major hurricane hitting Galveston in 1900.

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew

  • I'm in a book club on the international nesties board.  We skype in and chat about the book.  But that can only work if there aren't a billion people, methinks.  We voted on 6 months worth of books, and then recently we changed one because everything had been too depressing, so we read something light.

    It definitely works.

Mercy Thompson, the werewolf books?  Huh, I didn't think of those as YA at all.  But I agree, love them.  I can give you suggestions if you like that genre.

Also on my to read list: The Plutonium Files, Pope Joan, and Anna and the French Kiss. A diverse list I think.
  • I would be up for it, but I'm like Pink and my mood changes a lot. I'm also pretty particular in what I can have the attention span to read.

  • Any of Erik Larson's would be great.  My own problem with suggesting books is that my list is made up of books people here have suggested, so you've probably all read them.
  • HLQ- that is usually the kind of genre I like- fantasy, thriller, paranormal, magic, vampire, werewolf. HAHA.
