MIL has special cake request

Re: MIL has special cake request

  • MY fiance can't eat gluten, and we're not even having a gluten free cake. We are doing the groom's cake gluten free, and we will be cutting into and feeding each other out of that. Cupcakes, or some other dessert would be appropriate.

HOWEVER, not trying to be rude, but I think you may have misunderstood about their condition. My fiance has Celiac Disease, and the only "cure" or "medicine" is a gluten free diet. If he even gets one crumb of bread he is so incredibly sick. Some people with Celiac get more sick and others less sick, however every time they eat wheat (accidently or on purpose) it does serious damage to their intestines and over time it can cause cancer. The "based on their blood type" may be referring to the Celiac blood test, which then needs to be followed with a stomach biopsy to diagnose the condition. If they do in fact have Celiac Disease, please don't dismiss it as 'just a fad' it is a difficult, life changing disease.

If they are just heath food nuts and it really is a fad, then feel free to call it so :)
  • Being allergic to gluten is one thing, but I still wouldn't get the whole cake gluten free. My roommatehas celiac's disease and she hates every 'gluten free' product out there, so she either doesn't eat anything with gluten or just eats it and deals with the sickness later.

Like other people said, maybe you could have a fruit tray or some sort of small gluten free cake if you're really worried about offending them.

  • I am a vegan and I am having a vegan/gluten free cake.  I live in Wa so I am not sure what your state offers. I have a few friends and family that are vegan so I decided to do a vegan/gluten free cake but I wouldn't do it if you can eat gluten and no one else has asked. Because the place where I am looking at purchasing from are charging $6-9 per slice. So it does cost more because the product to make the cake would cost more. Good Luck.
  • Oh absolutely not. I'm annoyed for you that FMIL would even think you'd change the whole cake for some distant folks who don't even have an allergy.
