Irks up in here!

Re: Irks up in here!

  • I have another work irk: when people refuse to respond the multiple voicemails and emails that I send them.  I really don't give a shiit if you don't want to renew your policy, but have the balls to fucking tell me that.  I don't get why that is so difficult.
In Response to Re: Irks up in here! : Lloy is so different!  I dig it. My mom's drycleaner's name is Hyacinth, but she goes by her middle name... Aloma.  I like unique names but at that point I'd probably start going by something super ordinary.  Like Jane or something.
    Posted by AllAboutTheBenjamin
I think it's Welsh or something. It's definitely a comfort name for me, because I've never known anyone with the name. It feels like it's just hers. I also get a major tickle hearing people prounounce it "Louie."

Aloma is pretty, I like that! Damn, she's a telemarketer's nightmare lol.

  • My last name is the name of the country and I have two irks that go along with that.  One, since it should be familiar to everyone who has a minimal amount of knowledge about geography, it should be easy to pronounce.  Yet people butcher it all the time!

The other is that whenever I first meet someone, their first question to me is always, always, always, "oh, are you from (insert name here)" and then laugh. And the expect me to laugh and play along. Like they are the first person to make that joke in 33 years. My new last name is just as pun worthy but at least the material will be new to me.

I'd get asked lots of questions similar to that about my maiden name.  Like "Oh did you write that book, heh heh."  Wow.  How original.  And hilarious!  /snort

  • Irk regarding names, but probably more of an irrational irritation.

I was married at 22 years old and went from a not really common German name to a simple 4 letter word last name.  AKA King.

I have been FirstNameKing for 24 years now.  All of my adult life.  Fastforward to July 2012.  I am to be married, and my last name will change drastically to a not at all common English name, jokingly I have suggested to FI that I should be

    FirstName King-not so common LastName.

It has a nice ring to it.  And most people that know me in my professional/community sense know me by the King name.  Understandably he is not keen on me keeping my name from my first marriage, and I am not that keen on it either!  I am leaning towards a clean break and being FirstName NotsocommonLastName.  Change can be hard.  I need to get over it!  Thanks.
  • Speaking of puns, if ONE MORE PERSON sings "The First Noel" to me, i might throw  meat in their face.

Especially when they then chuckle and then say "bet you've never heard that one before"

At least be a bit more creative and sing Teenage Dirtbag.

  • My last name does not have an "a" sound but people pronounce it with one all the time. It's quite obvious that there is no "a" sound when looking at it. People will also spell it with an a when we say it for them even though there's no way a's make that sound. When I change my last name, I'll be mistaken for sharing the same last name as a serial killer even though FI's last name does not look or sound like it at all.
  • It's pretty much my favorite.  Who doesn't love a song written about a hot/awesome girl with your name?

I've always wondered this, too, Nicki. I usually guess reasons like keeping the last name for your kids, having that last name for such a long time, most people know you by that last name, it being a hassle to change etc.

But I'm curious about it and wonder if I would keep it or not. I suppose it all depends!
