Re: Unpopular Opinions

  • besides, saying "I'd like to" isn't the same as actually pulling the switch.

however, if someone killed a member of my family (or even my pets) I'd figure out a way to take them out. consequences be damned.
In Response to Re: Unpopular Opinions : My coworker wants his son to go do an English teaching program in Korea. Coworker is half-Korean and his mother has hosted some Korean exchange students in the US and knows a family who said he could stay with them. I also have a friend who's there now teaching English, and I know people who have done the same in China and Thailand. It seems like an awesome experience.

I think everyone should have the luxury of a second language. If we ever have kids together Fi have decided that he and his family will only speak Korean and anyone else could speak English in order to teach the child both. Which will lead to the child speaking both fluently without an accent.

From what I understand the language center of the brain is like a sponge up to around age six. Which make it harder for anyone over that age to learn a second language.

"I want the blue one" is not a difficult phrase. The way you were talking about not being able to understand customers who call you, I was under the impression that you worked at NASA rather than Ikea. 3. I'm glad you won't travel to other countries without learning the lanugage first. Since all other languages are beneath you, you obviously won't take the time to learn them and therefore will be forced to stay in America the rest of your life. That's actually great for us though, because we really don't need you running around being the poster child for ignorant Americans. At first I thought your ignorance was funny, but now you're really starting to piss me off.
In Response to Re: Unpopular Opinions : affects. Good lord, learn English or go back to Austria - wait, you said you only speak HS German, where can you possibly go?! You're going to have to live on an island somewhere by yourself. ETA: The second bolded part - you are really never going to go anywhere until you can speak the language enough to completely get around? That is crazy to me. Clearly travel is not a big priority of yours - which is fine, but just weird to me since for me it is so important.
    Posted by emilyinchile
That struck me as odd, as well, and made it obvious she's never traveled. i've been to the Czech Republic. How many visitors to the Czech Republic do you think study Czech for months before going there so they can communicate? Yeah. I learned a few key words AND traveled with a tour group and English speaking guides. And the Czechs are understanding that most people don't speak their language and they DO speak a lot of English. They don't just walk around telling people to speak to them in their language (which has 30 letters BTW).

I learned words and phrases I needed to get along in Germany. I used some of my broken high school French in Paris. It's usually a question of effort. If you can speak a few words of their language and the people working in the tourist industry can speak a few words of your language, you're fine to go on vacation.

I hide my Glee obsession IRL. FI knows because he lives here, but it's a well guarded secret to the rest of the world. When someone gets in my car and the Glee soundtrack starts blaring from my iPod, I have to do a lot of embarrassed explaining and usually say that I downloaded it for my son.

ETA- This was relevant when I though it would be right beneath OWN's post on the last page. Now I'm too lazy to go back and quote.
  • Hahaha I would be hard pressed to understand how you make it through the day if you can't decipher something like "I want the blue one".

  • I tried on the sig - let's see what happens.

Ok, I will concede that some of my "melting pot" comments where far too blanket statement-ish and a very, well, naive way of looking at things. It really didn't seem that when I typed it. Mea culpa.

I will also admit - though not sure if I've wholly changed my mind on the subject - you all have pointed out many perspectives I hadn't really thought of and enabled me to look at it with a different POV.

I do agree that we, as a country are extemely arrogant re: English and we absolutely should require more extensive language classes in school.

I guess the bottomline for me is that I only expect English in the US and I wouldn't expect it in other countries - why should others? And I don't think either of those things is unreasonable.

It's pronounced "fish." I didn't google. I learned that in 7th grade. It proves how difficult the English language is, which I mentioned in a previous post (-o, -ow and -ough, for example).

Edit: Dammit, you already gave it away.

I think its one of those things people either love or hate. I'm a big Gleek. I can't tell you how many times I've busted out laughing so hard, then have to rewind it because I've missed the next few lines. They definitely are sexing it up a lot, which I do think is a bit much for high school. But in the same sense, thats exactly how high school is now. At least the one I taught at. Its really sad.

  • Mery, exactly. I was supposed to learn Greek before I went to Greece? I may have been in a sorority, but knowing a few letters from the alphabet doesn't mean I even know how to say "I want the blue one." I try to learn hello, goodbye, please, thank you, yes and no in the languages of countries I'm going to for the trip just to make an effort, but even so I do not remember how you say goodbye in Croatian anymore.

  • I'm bummed that I missed the debate goodness and came in when we're talking about glee.
  • If FI and I went by the idea of not speaking to anyone who didn't really know good English, then we would never ever speak to our immediate neighbors since none of them speak English as their native language.

Hell, we should have just kicked the neighbor kid out when he came to translate what his dad wanted to ask us about building a fence between our yards. Who needs to be friendly with their neighbors anyway?
