Deal Breakers

In your dating history, what were the things that no matter how strongly you cared about the person, if they did ________________________ it was a deal breaker.

I realize this opens us all up to judging.

I couldn't marry a smoker. I know it sounds petty, but totally a deal breaker.

I couldn't marry someone who didn't have a job and wasn't going to school.

Re: Deal Breakers

  • Im with you I could NEVER marry a smoker. Also someone that repeatedly cheats on you.  (terrrible high school decision by me ugh makes me mad just remembering!!!)
  • Smoker for me too. It makes me choky feeling (asthma)
Any kind of drugs (marijuana included) I was such a goody two shoes I couldnt get past that
  • I require life ambition.  I actually almost broke up with FI once when he was having a period of nerves about graduation during his senior year of college.

    I couldn't marry a smoker.

I'm pretty much the alpha member of my pack.  I couldn't ever be with someone who wanted to dominate me.  To my delight, I ended up with someone who puts up with me and stands up for things when he feels the need.

  • Refusing to pee in a toilet ... sadly, I didn't know this was a deal breaker until I had to actually deal with the problem

  • I couldn't marry a man who experimented sexually with another man.  I just couldn't.

Also, someone who had spent time in prison.  Not jail.  PRISON.
     (for any reason)

I couldn't marry a man who had a previous drug problem. (Not being judgmental about anyone's past,)

  • Also no prison or jail.

    No permanent STDs.

What was his reasoning for refusing to pee in a toilet?
  • I couldn't marry a smoker, someone who hunted, or someone who did drugs (or anything that routinely risked their safety, really).

    Umm, what?!
  • I couldn't marry a man who cheated on me.
  • Someone allergic to cats. Sorry, buddy. They're staying, and no, I will NOT give them up for you. fuckface.

  • I couldn't marry a man who didn't love or respect his mother.  He would probably have women issues up the ying yang.

Liars.  I can't deal.  I've been down that road and refuse to go back again.

  • I couldn't be with someone who:

Was emotionally immature/manipulative/self-centered and/or negative. I can't deal with pessimism or someone who feels sorry for themselves constantly.

I couldn't be with someone who does drugs frequently.

I couldn't be with someone who is a bad kisser, or someone who I have no sexual chemistry with.

    The list goes on!

  • No drugs for me too...always been a good two shoes as well nda.  Also no one that's been to prison.  Oh and someone allergic to dogs!!!  It would NEVER last!!
  • And let the list be said, Sun! :) those were good ones.

Also, someone who didn't value family. I'm super close with my family. Someone who didn't understand that or respect that would be out the door.

Also, someone who puts softball before anything. I LOVE softball as much as the next guy, but it seriously broke up one of my serious relationships. If it wouldn't have been for softball, I'm not sure where that relationship would have gone.

  • OH also, importantly, I would never marry someone who wasn't open to experience. Trying new foods, traveling, doing new things etc are so important to me. If you are a fussy eater, you're out! haha.

And yes, fische, I second the cat thing. If you hate cats, you don't belong with me.

(basically, what I'm saying is that the only person I want to be with is my H! haha).

  • I couldn't marry a smoker, or anyone addicted to anything really.

    I couldn't marry a cheater.

I couldn't marry someone who doesn't want kids.

I couldn't marry anyone super religious, no matter what that religion was.

  • Lack of ambition is a deal-breaker.

Being athiest is a deal-breaker.  I dated an athiest but I never would have married him.

    Disliking animals is a deal-breaker.

And this probably isn't going to be popular, but having a kid/kids is a deal-breaker.
  • The ambition one is good!  I have to agree with that.  As well as the drugs.

Someone who didn't want kids would be a deal breaker for me.

  • Someone who smokes, or does any kind of drugs..

Someone who cheated on me - even once...

Someone without career goals or ambition. I know it sounds awful, but one of my good friends is married to a guy who cannot hold a job to save his life, which means they're 35 and haven't been able to start having the 3 kids they want to have, because they can't afford it. No, thank you. I couldn't tolerate being a sole breadwinner.

  • If you didn't like sports, that was a deal breaker.

If you didn't like to go to concerts and experience life? Deal breaker.

  • wow, most of you couldn't marry my h. awesome.
  • Someone shorter than me...it makes me too self-conscious

Someone who didn't go to school (petty I know)

    Someone who didn't want children

And, I don't think I could date an extreme republican

Ah yes, the mood killers and fun suckers.  I have enough "friends" like that, I couldn't deal with it on such a personal level.

  • No smokers.  No drugs.  No college degree would have been tough - would have had to have a solid career otherwise.  Only somebody really very intelligent.  Nobody who wanted to try to control me.  I'm very independent.
