    This.

    I'll add:

He must be cool with me preferring to watch science or history shows, or social commentary documentaries, rather than reality tv, soap operas or sports.  Also, I'm a sci-fi nerd, he's gotta be cool with Star Trek, Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, ect.

He must also be open-minded and willing/able to engage in a good debate about things.

He must be willing to learn new things.

I don't want to deal with current drug or alcohol issues.  Past problems are okay, provided they'd stay in the past.  Relapses would be dealt with accordingly.  I want to work with addicts and the mentally ill, not marry one.

Wanting to have kids can't be his dealbreaker.  I'm on the fence about having kids, he better be okay with maybe not having any.
  • This isn't based on past relationships, but just on me.

    1. Having different religious beliefs from me (someone of a different religion, not denomination) would be a deal breaker
    2. Never wanting kids
    3. Unable to keep a job

Those are probably the biggest three, and I also need to be with a person who is educated. I could never date someone who dropped out of high school and never tried for a GED or something.

But I would never seriously date someone in category 1. It's one of the most important things to me, so I wouldn't even go past a few dates.

Andplusalso for me, he's gotta get along with my family.
  • I was going to say that oddly enough I have never dated anyone with kids.  But then I realized my ex had 2 kids, but I never met them.   He was older and they were in their 20s.  He financially was very supportive but they had no relationship.  I only met his mom once too.  Over a 9 year period.  She was not very nice to me.
