Re: FFF

  • KK, I completely understand. Trust me.

I know what it's like to be poor. I know what it's like to live in a house during the entire Texas summer without electricity. I know what it is to eat Ramen every fucking night of the week. I know what it is to be evicted from your home. I know what it is to skip washing your hair because you're rationing the rest of your shampoo.

And I also know what it is to live down the street from Burger King when they had cheeseburgers selling for $.27/each, and taking advantage of that shiit daily, just so that you don't have to eat the aforementioned Ramen.

That was my life when I was in high school

These are all things I know and understand. Which is why I said that I think it's sad that the less healthy choice in food is less than the healthy choice. I've already said that.

Yeah, I had no problem in NYC. Anywhere I lived, a supermarket was pretty much around the corner. But in some cities, it's a real issue.

    Posted by mag920
Of course they are. My grandfather also got health care as part of his pension/retirement package. I didn't feel the need to mention it.

I've been using "free" in quotation marks because it is free to THEM as in they don't pay directly for any health care. It is a benefit. Obviously someone (the government) pays for it. I don't understand your point.

Edit: I also used military health care as one of several examples. I used Medicaid as an example, too.
In Response to Re: FFF : My point is that it's NOT free. They have to perform a service (in this case military service) in order to receive this "free" benefit. While it may not be a monitary contribution, it's still a contribution non-the less.
    Posted by mag920
And it can be argued that people who have employer-based health care get it because they are doing their employer a service. I am NOT arguing that everyone's contribution to society is equal and that the military do not perform a special service, by the way. But, for example, my employer subsidizes all but $50/month of my medical insurance. Before I was required to pay the $50, I could have claimed I got free insurance because it was free to ME even though it was several thousand a year for my employer. Semantics.

  • Thank you Emily. I made a comment in the original post that went something like, "Why is the government able to provide "free" military health care, medicaid, medicare, etc? I want in on some of that "free" health care." Obviously I misspoke because a lot of people, not just Mag, took it the wrong way, so I take responsibility for that. I should have stuck with Medicaid (government providing for people who can't afford insurance in any way, shape or form) rather than mentioning military benefits which are very far removed from what I was trying to get at.

I am also very vocal about my liberal politics in general, and I can see some people (not saying anyone here does) can see that as meaning anti-military, which is very far from the truth. I certainly do not want to be in the military, but because of that, I very much respect those who choose to make that sacrifice. Hell, my grandfather, four of his brothers, one of his sisters and three of his BILs were in the military, as well as my dad's BIL. And that's just one side of my family. I grew up surrounded by veterans.

I get what you're saying, but Boston is something like the 8th largest metro area in the country. It's larger than some countries. And frankly, a lot of things Boston has (cultural, in particular, and also public transit) are better than LA.

I grew up in a city of 300,000 with a metro area of 1 million. To me, it was medium-sized, since it wasn't one of the most important cities in the country. But I would never say it wasn't a "real" city.

  • I'm with Emily. I think Mery's comments are being taken out of context/order/etc., and viewed much more harshly than they were intended.

I think military folks, veterans, and retirees should have the medical benefits they get, and at no cost to themselves. They're not free - they're funded by their employer just like my benefits are (partially) funded by MY employer - it just so happens that their employer is the US government. I really think of military healthcare in the same way that I do civilian employer provided insurance. In both cases, it benefits the employer for the employee to be healthy, so they provide coverage. In the case of the military, it sort of rolls in worker's comp, too.

As for overall military benefits - I think it's important to provide benefits that are compelling enough to draw people to serve in the military. Some will join because they enjoy it, because the "toys" are fun, because they can get college paid for, whatever.

But I don't see anywhere that Mery has suggested that they don't deserve the benefits that they have. Just that she would like to see a program administered in the same way made available to all Americans. I don't think she was suggesting that to devalue lower the value of benefits to the military - just that it's an example of government run healthcare that CAN work.
