[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Friday Night Thread Goes Here : If box kitty was your prior sig pic, she's cute. I loved your story today about the food. FI had a himalayan named Basil who was like Box Kitty.  I never got to meet Basil, sadly. I'm certain he'd have hated me...he hated everyone but FI. One time, according to FI, Basil was so miffed about having been groomed, he ran into the fireplace and rolled around in the fine ash.

Yup, that's her.  That sounds like something she would do too.  Her current thing is running into the garage when we're going out (but only when we're on our way to work).  She started by being super obvious, winding around our legs right by the door.  Then she'd hide under the dining table, and come sprinting over as soon as we opened the door.  When that stopped working, she started going into her litter box when she saw we were getting ready to leave, and scratching around like she was using it, but sprinting out when we opened the door.  I mean, she's SMART.  She knows enough to try to TRICK us.  WTF?

There was definitely a point to be conceded - which is that, if you would think "samely" of your young friend who wanted kids vs. your young friend who did want kids, that I was wrong to be annoyed with you.

But your last comment about regret rates was completely incorrect and re-raised my hackles. So, I guess I'll leave it at that because you don't want to discuss it anymore, and because frankly I feel like a jackass for junking up the evening thread.

In other news...I'm working on the gay marriage/CW thread and whew, that's got me pissy as well. So I guess I'm just pissy. (sidenote, go to hell monkeysip)

  • Hey guys. I'm going to de-lurk. I'd just like to point out that getting sterilized is probably a sign of maturity. It's not a body alteration like a tattoo, it's a serious medical procedure that will prevent something that she obviously doesn't want to happen.

I have a friend who has known that she didn't want kids since she was 16. She tried to get sterilized at 21, 23, and now 25, and each time the doctor has told her no.

This particular issue makes me very angry, because to me, it's just the same the abortion debate. Someone else thinks that they know my body better and should be able to tell me what to do with it. That's not right. If I choose to have my tubes tied, and then 5 or 10 years down the line, I regret it, then it's my problem. I will have to deal with it, by not having kids, having the procedure undone, or adopting.

But telling me that I don't get to make this decision because I may have to deal with the consequences in the future is very condescending. (Note, not that I think Poke is being condescending. I think physicians have a habit of this train of thought.)

I'm not exactly saying people don't get to have an opinion, nor am I trying to restart an argument, just that I kind of wish people didn't feel so entitled to have an opinion on people's (women's) personal decisions.

It's just something that I've thought a lot about and have a strong (ahem) opinion on.
