Seating Chart Confusion

I am having a small wedding witha receptions guest total of only 40 or so guests. I am not doing the 'traditional' round tables, and am thinking of either do a theatre or U shape seating arrangement. GIven the fact that it is a small reception, and I am not having a full meal served, do I really need to create a seating chart?

In your situation, I don't think you need one. Just make sure there are enough chairs for everyone.

No, it's not necessary..  I think with a party this small, people will figure out where to sit.

If you do go without a seating chart I may recommend you have a few more than 40 seats total because as people begin to sit down they may not fill in evenly and couples may get separated etc.  So to avoid an awkward situation for those who are last to sit down, it would be nice to have additional spaces so people can more easily group as they wish.
