Captain obvious! She was being sarcastic.
  • this is a P&R since I spent my last free minutes reading this damn thing, BUT. I like Mery most of the time but got a more sour taste for her after the whole "Well I just can't BELIEVE that people don't know where Mauritius is/that it was a country". Even after she was flamed for it and came back to explain herself, it still wasn't much more than a "Well, it just didn't seem like something people wouldn't know" type of excuse. That made me REALLY roll my eyes. Because knowing every damn country on the planet does not make you more or less informed than another.

    /posts and runs.

  • Oh yeah, musu that really annoyed me too.  I'm pretty damn smart, but when it comes to geography I am terrible.  I have no problem admitting that.  I'm not a visual enough person.  No one knows EVERYTHING.  Admitting you don't know something does not make you dumb.  It makes you human.

  • I just went and read that post, and although she didn't specify, from the context it seems like Stacey was talking about situtations like a group gathering when two people are exclusive by speaking another language vs. strangers on the street speaking their own language. And I agree with her comment. I'm bilingual, and I think it's rude for me to speak Spanish to my husband in a group of English-speakers or English to a friend if someone else in the group only speaks Spanish.

Oh my god, what is today?! I've agreed with Nicole and Stacey. This is a sign of the apocalypse.

Mery was not helping anyone learn geography, she was scoffing at the idea that someone had never heard of some obscure place before.  That's the difference.

  • I remember laughing so hard at the geography thing. I teased MP about it last week. My H had never heard of it, so we teased him, too.

People are good at different things. No one has to know everything, but if you don't know the basics that every adult should know, you have a problem.

  • SC, you're right, you don't post often. When you do, though, it's usually kind of long and dramatic.
  • I dont think either Mery OR Anna ever tries to be condescending. They're both so educated and well read and freaking smart that some things they say probably just come off that way. But I've never seen Anna come off as condescending at all. Mery - yes. Anna, no.

I don't think either of them is consciously trying to say others are stupid though.

<div>Honestly I don't know the last time I've been on Goodreads (not trying to be a bitch).  And I never really paid attention to what anyone reads, I signed up more just because I thought we would be able to share Kindle books easier.  But yeah, everyone has comments or threads that stick out to them, and that is just something I remember.  I do know you further explained yourself, but to me it just seemed like backpeddling when people called you out for it.  I'm not trying to rehash a (very) old thing, just something that sticks out to me that I was reminded of.</div>
