I will forever be fat. I blame H.

So - I love my husband, but he finds recipes that are just insane - and then gives me puppy dog eyes til we make it. Tonight's debacle? Bread pudding made from glazed doughnuts. ::sigh:: Anyone else have a S/O who keeps them chunky?

Re: I will forever be fat. I blame H.

  • I've definitely gained weight after moving in together.  When I was single, I was perfectly happy having a bowl of cereal for dinner.   Now, its always a whole meal.  Its unfair because he is tall and thin and can eat a ton without a prob.  Me, not so much.
  • FI put a chocolate orange and ferrero rochers in my stocking. He also bought me 12 hershey chocolate bars for my birthday. So yea, he keeps me chunky.
  •  I will blame H for my chunk ass.  It's not his fault, but all I know is when I met him I was a size 4.  Now?  Nope.  Coincidence?  I think not.

  • Omg! Leah - you're so right! I used to be perfectly fine with a bowl of cereal or even a bowl of like steamed broccoli or something. H's famous line is "I need sides, woman!" I never had sides with tacos until H, I never had sides with hamburger helper until H. Thankfully I haven't learned his gravy habit but he's got to have it with every meal, it seems. Boys!!!!
  • I will always be skinny.

    Blame my exH!
  • Ha!  So true.  Its funny you mention the broccoli, but as gross as it sounds, I used to love a big bowl of spinach with my favorite spices on it.  Used to gross my roomates right out.
Hubby ALWAYS has to have "sides".  it can't just be a burger - there has to be some potatoes or at least some beans or SOMETHING to go with it.  I pretty much just stock up on those crescent rolls and throw those in the oven when I have nothing else.

I'm tired of cooking. I set down a new law - Hubby is responsible for dinner 3 nights a week.  Hasn't been working otu so well though.
  • bread pudding made from galzed donuts does sound pretty delish though.  How did it turn out?
  • Since I moved in with FI, the healthy cooking has dropped off and the Taco Bell trips have been steadily on the rise... just like my weight.

  • Brandon decided I was too skinny when we first met, so he made me eat full meals with him. He's been a long distance runner for 14 years...needless to say, the amount of food I need, and the amount he needs aren't even comparable.

So a year and 40lbs later...
  • The bread pudding is currently cooling and getting gelatenous - I'll let you know :-) I think maybe our men were separated at birth. H thinks that having ham with corn and mashed potatoes with bread of some sort is a well balanced meal. I tell him we need veggies and he says that corn and mashed potatoes count. Ugh
  • When I was preg, FI would get me ice cream all the time. I think the ice cream replaced my wine before bed habit. The only problem is that I can still see the ice cream repercussions in my arms. And my ass. And my legs. Sigh.
  • Definetely my situation!  My FI is a bigger guy and doesnt mind being heavy at all.  Me, on the other hand, I've gained almost 50lbs since my senior year of high school (7 years ago) and being a former dancer, this is not ok with me.  Everytime I go on a diet, he gets so angry because I stop making super fattening dinners and makes it so hard for me to keep on track.  Well now that I have a wedding to plan, I am starting weight watchers in February (it worked really well for me before).  And I am trying my hardest to get him to do it with me...simply because he is my worst enemy when it comes to eating food and it'd be nice to have him on my side for once.

  • Well I'm not fat (I'm right in the middle of what is average for my height), but I could lose a 10-20 lbs to make me feel better.

Unfortunately my husband is addicted to food, plus he is a chef by profession.  Food is his life and he gets all sad when I do not want to eat.   At least my job is physical so I can burn off a lot of the calories.

I guarentee if I was single those pounds would be gone.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Ummm....you all realize you're all in control of what you eat, right? H & I eat pretty healthy, I do most of the cooking and there is almost always salad or veggies involved. We do make carb sides, but I try to stick to a serving and not just dump a bunch of pasta in the pot, I measure it out. I also make almost everything from scratch--no boxed side dishes etc. I have high blood pressure, so most of those things are loaded with sodium.

Anysunrise--my brother is a runner so I know what you mean. Don't let him make your plate--make your own. Because you're right--he needs wayyyy more calories than you do.

There are tons of books and sites out there that will guide you to correct portions. And if your FI/Hs want you to make fattening foods, let them make it or make it and make something healthy for yourself.

kmd--hope your FI does weight watchers with you. He might not "mind" being bigger, but he shouldn't discourage you from getting in shape. Plus the long-term health is what I always think of. H has gained some weight (he's a snacker) and I put on maybe 7 lbs. BUt it's my own fault for not eating like I usually do and not working out as much. So after my friend's wedding next weekend, we agreed it's ON. Workouts are the key for us, since we usually do eat pretty healthy.

  • Sigh. I hear you ladies. I have a heck of a time maintaining my weight, and then losing weight when I gain it, mostly due to my Celiac disease and bad arthritis. FI has PKU, so his diet is loaded with sugar and potatoes and pasta and stuff. Which is fine for him because he will always be skinny. I, on the other hand, have the exact opposite problem, but out of convenience we always end up eating the same foods. I have gained 40!!!! pounds in the two years we have been together. I am starting a modified version the Paleo Diet next week, and looking at it as a complete lifestyle change. My Wii told me the other day that I am fat and old, and it was a wakeup call.

  • i gained nearly 20 pounds since i got married, but i dont think its from the food since we eat very healthy for the most part.  i think my issue is stress from work and hormones (went off the pill about 17 months ago).

<div>Thank you, voice of reason. </div><div>When H and I actually get the chance to have dinner together (which is sadly not that often because we have opposite work schedules) we keep it good for us. If anything, I think I've had a positive effect on his eating habits since we've been together rather than him having a negative effect on mine. </div>

  • I'm finding I have that problem too. FI always makes too much food, complains if I don't finish it because he will have to eat the leftovers. If he isn't cooking too much he wants to go out for dinner, which I don't mind when I go but it is so unhealthy. He always wants to go get Mexican or Chinese food, so I'm limited to the super unhealthy stuff there.

  • I have gained 50 pounds in the last 8 years.  I figure that's not just due to my horrible eating habits as it is the fact that I stopped going out to the 18+ nightclubs and dancing the night away 5 nights a week when I turned 21.

  • I am the one that does all the cooking here. I have actually lost a few pounds since we first started dating and I am trying to lose a few more. If I gain any bc of cooking all the time, it is my own fault.

Oh I definitely did, once I woke up one day and was like "Wtf, why do I have a gut!". I figure I'm going to solve the problem by making him take me running with him too =D
  • Want amazing recipes that H and Fl won't know are healthy? Look up a book called "eat, shrink and be merry". all healthy recipes and my Fl thought my lasagna was amazing and it's low fat! Fl is currently really thin no matter what he eats but he likes being healthy and he knows that it is important to me to maintain a healthy lifestyle so I am lucky in that regard.

aMrs: H actually heard about this recipe on the food network or something, and got a normal bread pudding recipe and we just cut the sugar in half and used the doughnuts instead. I definitely don't suggest fresh doughnuts. Get them and use them the next day maybe or even the day after. Our BP is a little mushy, but soooooooooo good. It kinda smells like walking into an ice cream store as they're making waffle cones.
  • Pirata and Salt, you're totally right. I used to do a lot of the cooking, but it gets so aggravating (and expensive) to make things that he just won't eat. I've gotten him to agree to using ground turkey in things, etc. but he's not all about healthy food. It just sucks having to make two different meals. But I totally understand what you're saying.
  • Tell him to cook his own damn food if he wants things made from glazed donut pieces!

That wouldn't float in our house.  I cook it, you eat it.  Trust me to not make something gross.
Anyone over the age of 12 who is that fussy gets to cook his own meals.

  • Haha, I've tried that, aMrs. He started stopping at McDonalds on his way home so he was just surprisingly "not hungry" a lot. I stopped answering him when he asked what was for dinner though - it's helped a bit. I just wish he would eat something green once in a while.

(he eats green beans, but only if they've been cooked with bacon...I dont count those lol)
  • Start by not cooking "healthy".  If someone saw our weekly menu they would flip over the "bad" food choices BUT...we eat clean (as we can).  Everything is home cooked, and has only a few ingredients, and goes bad quickly.  H has actually lost weight.

Once he is used to eating good home cooked food, then you start making it healthier

Stopping at McDees on the way home to avoid vegetables is just childish.
