Brandi, I do put myself down a lot, I call it low self esteem mixed with self depricating humor. I'm very, very far from vain and don't legitimately go looking for compliments, but many times, that seems to be the reaction that people have. I don't actually take compliments well. But I'll accept that you don't know me, just like I don't know you. I hope your opinion of me eventually changes, but if it doesn't, no sweat.

No, not quite.  A straw man is where someone ignores the point the other party to the discussion/argument is  making and makes their own unsubstantiated claim.  It's an attack in a debate, frequently used when one party (generally the one who is losing) cannot refute the other party's claim or argument.  Meg's example was pretty accurate.
