[QUOTE]Last year I didn't have time to make anything....haha we didn't even put up a tree! Two years ago I made my nieces and nephews puppets to go along with all their other goodies!

  • Leisel, did they pay for any part of the wedding? If so, I don't think it's that weird. If not, I think it's a little weird but it might not be for them. My family and friends get gifts for each other for lots of reasons so that's why it would seem odd to me.
  • Wally, I think that's perfect.  You already contributed the cash for the wedding, and now you're giving a thoughtful, heartfelt gift.  That's plenty, IMO.

Everything the light touches is my kingdom.
  • My parents did technically "get" us a gift, leisel. But they paid for the entire wedding so we considered that a huge ass gift, haha.

  • wally: that is great!

I was bummed that my parents hadn't given us a card.  That was all I wanted.  But about 6 months after the wedding they gave us a card and check.  It was unexpected.
  • J, hope it works out.  Hopefully your lungs will chill out soon too. The gift thing would really irritate me too.
    Hockey, those puppets are neat.
Wally, i don't think I've ever had the sweet potatoes. Maybe I'll try that.
       Leisel, maybe a little weird.

Lizzie, my first semester in the dorms I remember wanting real food. I'm talking restaurants, not campus food. If their parents don't give them much fun money and they don't have a job I bet a giftcard to a restaurant would be nice. I can't remember much else. The visa giftcard is always a good idea.
  • Lizzie, my grandma used to send me stamps when I was in college.  I think she figured that I'd send her letters (which I did) if I had stamps.
  • No, my parents paid for the whole shebang. I think it's a little bit strange H's parents didn't get us anything, but it's not that big of a deal to me. My mom thinks it's insane, haha.
  • Wally, I think that's lovely.

I really hope my parent's don't get us anything. We're paying for the wedding, but they're retired and on a fixed income.  The best gift they could give me is the fact that Mom will be able to actually walk into the church and dance with daddy at the reception.

I just know I'm going to cry when I see that.  Ugly cry.

Knowing my mom, though, they'll get us a gift.  If they give me the Roomba or the Dyson I registered for, I don't know how easily I'll be able to accept it.  They're so pricey, but my parent's are like that with us kids!

Cool on the gift situation. Thanks for the opinions! I think they will like it. DD is weird because she isn't like super sentimental on the surface, but if you find something really meaningful, she just melts.

For her LPN pinning a few weeks ago, we had a stamped silver necklace made for her with the title of a poem on it (Just Think) and then the card had the whole poem. It was something she saw once while shopping and really liked the gist of the poem. Almost every time I've seen her since. she's had that necklace on.

Hockey, you are crafty little thing! Super cute stuff!

  • In college, I always loved that my bank that I worked at would give employees a grocery store gift card for Xmas. Money for groceries is always a great thing when you're just starting on your own. J, you might briefly meet Willow and Tory on Saturday. I have to bring them with me to my parents since I will be gone almost all day so they need a babysitter.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Hello? : I was so hungry for pancakes today. So after the dress fittings, we went to Perkins. Cuz I'm too lazy to cook pancakes at home.  H & I just talked about wedding gift  for the kids last night. We are doing the wedding (although her bio mom did pay off the photographer, which was an unexpected surprise!) and wondered if anything else was necessary. I noticed a pair of plaques that had the verse from Ruth about 'where ever you go, I will go; where ever you stay, I will stay' on DD's Pinterest board. They are having that reading. So, I found the plaques and ordered them. I will make a really groove card to go with it and both H and I will write the letters to go in it. And I think that is going to be the extent of it. Is that adequate, do you think?

  • lizzie: when I was in college all I wanted money for smokes and pizza. haha

  • Lizzie, I always liked grocery store gift cards. If they're living in an apartment or something and not a dorm, a basket of cleaning supplies would be good, too. My mom got me that when I moved from the dorms into a "real" apartment.
  • Wally, that's really thoughtful and nice. Perfect!
Lizzie, A lot of those Visa gift cards have hidden fees-I'd do a Target GC or something, depending on where they're going to school.

</div><div>Grandma's are so cute!  I can honestly say, however, that eventhough email is so convienent, I still love getting cards or letters in the mail.  It's flattering to know that someone took the time to sit down and WRITE a letter, or even just a note.  I actually have personalized stationary and note cards. I do send emails, but I love writing letters and thank you notes, thinking of you notes and the like. There's something comforting about sitting at a writing desk and penning something on pretty paper.</div>

<div>It is awesome to get an honest-to-goodness, handwritten note or letter in the mail. My aunt and another older lady sent us thank-you cards for the big party we had for my dad. So nice of them. My aunt has gorgeous handwriting and a way with words. I saved it just because it was so pretty and sweet. </div>

  • Zizi, Outback's sweet potatoes are basically just baked but they top them with a bunch of wonderful (and naughty) stuff which makes them amazing!
    image
  • I LOVE getting real letters and cards. It just makes my whole day.
  • Good points on food and restaurants!

They'll both be in dorms...freshman requirement...so I think a stocking full of pizza GC's, Visa GC's and maybe Amazon, too. Old Navy for the niece and A&F for the nephew. Oh! and a GC for gas!!!
  • Yes on the gas giftcard! It makes going home so much easier!
  • MuSu. were you stellar in court today?

  • When I was younger, I used to exchange letters with people I talked with online.  It was always funny because we would talk almost everyday, but then we would still write actual letters and include pictures and stuff.  I still have most of them.
  • Lizie, you guys will be the favorite Aunt/Uncle for sure!
Wally, I will definitely have to try that.

</div><div>I have a letter that my maw-maw wrote to my paw-paw when he was at sea in WWII.  It's just full of what daily life was like for her, and how she missed him and couldn't wait for him to come home.  It makes me cry when I read it.</div><div>
</div><div>A couple of months ago, mom gave me this locket that Maw-maw wore. It contains a picture of Paw-paw and Maw-maw when they were young. She wore it everyday he was away at war.  I'm having it attached to my bouquet so that they will be with me. </div><div>

  • Haha Wally! Not sure if stellar is the word, but it went well and a few hours after it was over, the clerk called and told us the judge was drafting an order and it was in our favor, so we won! The judge is definitely a stickler and a hard ass though and was pretty tough on me. My supervising attorney later said that he was impressed with my ability to stay smooth and not let it affect my performance. It can be awkward but you just have to remember that the judge does it specifically because she knew that I'm a student attorney. I'm also pretty easygoing, so that helped.

  • Lizzie, that is so cool!

  • Lizzie: that is very sweet.  My mom has all the letters my dad wrote her while he was serving in Vietnam.  It is super cute, she has them all tied together with a ribbon.  Every 10 years or so I catch her reading them.
