Actually it is not illegal to spank your child in Canada. It is however illegal to pull their pants down or to hit them with anything other that an open hand when spanking a child.

Yes, thanks.

And Kate, I guess my point is that I, as someone who didn't experience it, would never have an argument with you about something 9/11 and try to tell you how you and everyone involved in it should feel, or something. You might not think your opinion counts more, but *I* think that.

• I hope I was right on the summarizing of what Mery was saying.  I think that's what she was getting at.

Though, I can't think of a single eastern state that hasn't voted blue in... I don't know how long.  NY might have a Republican governor, but it doesn't go red for the presidency.

No, but you would think that if they thought the Republicans were doing a good job at fighting terrorism, the percentage of people voting Republican would have gone up. But it actually went down from the election in 2000.

And really, only the metro areas of NY are very blue. There are a lot of rural places that are red. I think about 60% of upstate votes Republican. It's seen as such a blue state because NYC contains half the state's population and overwhelmingly votes Democrat. Plus, the Republicans in NY tend to be moderate.

• I don't care much for pies that have chunks of fruit in them. I make an exception with apple, but you'll never see me eat cherry, strawberry, blueberry, fraggleberry, etc. Ick.

I like lemon pie, but there's no chunks in that.

Well, that's the same in Michigan, really.  Much of rural MI is republican, but the state has been and always will be blue because of Detroit.

I think there's a big difference in loving your country, but understanding its flaws.  It's the blind patriotism that everything the US does is golden that is problematic.  I'm proud to be American, but not to the extent that I rub it in people's faces.

To be honest, it's sort of the same in CA. The urban population is more spread out among the state, here, but the counties that border on NV and AZ are REALLY rural and conservative.

Except Orange County. That's urban and conservative. It's an anomaly.

• This whole 9/11 discussion brings to my mind an occasion when I was angrier than I can ever recall being before. Mr Panda got into a heated discussion with a member of the Air Force over his disagreement with the war. The guy eventually took the tact of "You're not military, therefor you should shut up."  Mr Panda, being as he is calm and rather stoic, explained that he was not only military at one point, but actually fought in the war himself. Air Force guy then became very respectful and said "Oh, well in that case you are allowed your opinion."

Excuse me, but I thought one of the great things about America is that we can all think whatever we want. Also, we can say it. Guess I was mistaken.
• I don't understand why people give me a hard time about drinking diet, caffeine-free soda.  Seriously, it's just water with some carbonation and flavor added.  What's the big deal?

I hate water.  BLEH.

My FI hates Julia Roberts, period.  He thinks she has a huge mouth.  He hates Kyra Sedgwick (the Closer) for the same reason.  Every time he sees an ad for something with either one of them, he says "Oh my god, her mouth is SO HUGE!"

Also, my unpopular opinion is that people need to be accountable for themselves... public funds should require much more stringent guidelines to qualify. I'm tired of dealing with people who feel entitled.
My unpopular opinion today is that I really think pie is gross. In fact, I dislike almost any cooked fruit. We were at a bbq with some of our friends the other night, and we all brought a part of the meal. Dessert was pie. I don't expect them to bring something other than pie, I'm confident they didn't even know I dislike pie, but once I tell you, "No, I'm good, thanks though." Stop trying to shove it down my throat. I don't like pie.
Posted by mrs.jesse
I also don't like any cooked fruit (except deep fried bananas and pineapple on pizza) or pudding. I've been with H for 7 years, and EVERY time we have a get together with his family where there is pie, they try to shove it down my throat and tease me about not liking it. I get it already, you think I'm a f*cking idiot. I'm still not eating the pie.

I'm going to tell you a little secret Celles: every country is like that.  The French, Italians, Brits, Spaniards, Germans (dear god the Germans)--- they ALL think they are better than everyone else.  You just don't hear about it because of the US news.
• I'm not saying people aren't ALLOWED to have an opinion, I'm just saying I can disagree with it and find it ridiculous. I find some opinions to be more intelligent and logical than others. But on the flip side I'm sure people disagree with lots of my opinions, and that's fine.
