Well we should all pick up and go teach wherever you sister teaches. My mom works for the school district (in the special services dept) but she only had one of those off for Rosh Hashanah. Everyone I know that teaches has a lot of work. My high school hours were from 8am-3pm. Thats 7 hours of students being there most of them arrive at 7am and stay till 4pm. Remember when you had to write papers and essays? Well someone has to grade them!! Most teachers take their jobs home with them in that they work/grade/prep at home and they worry about their kids. Most of my teacher friends have to work as club/sports directors to make ends meet. As for summers off most teachers I know work second jobs at camps because not all districts allow for pay checks to be spread over 12months. DMJL - yay for pretty princesses!

you guys are at the wrong district, she works 7:30 to 3:30, but only teaches 5 or 6 classes that are 40-45 minutes, so that is like 4-5 hours of work.  She has tenure after 3 years which is ridiculous, I thought it used to be like 20 + years.  I asked her about her 403B, she is like I dont need it I ahve a pension, which is ridiculous that a govt employee gets better benefits that a private citizen who pays for her salary and benefits.  She grades papers for an hour or two a week in her PJ's.  She get a new contract and a retro raise for 3 years at 4%, when most in private industry got no bonus no raise. The rest all the same, and they all complain I dont make enough, or I cant believe summer is over and I have to go back to work, per hour they get paid an insane amount of money.    I get paid like McDonalds per hour with the overtime we can work

Sorry to say, but if your only doing an extra 1-2 hour a week then your probably a sh*tty teacher. How do you plan lessons, create authentic assessments, differentiate your lesson for 5-6 different learning styles, and check that your students are meeting the standards by actually grading them on a rubric. Also, she should have a 403B- I did when I was in public school. The Pension is not promised to anyone. Also, I not longer have any retirement plan because I cannot afford it and i work 2 jobs along with a summer job. As all of us can tell you... you are not a teacher from 7:30-3:00. You are ALWAYS working. Back to the topic of today.... here is my rubric for wedding reviews A+- Vendor went above and beyond expectations A- Vendor performed job as expected B+- Vendor performed job as expected with one minor glitch that was out of his/her control B- Vendor performed job as expected with one minor glitch that could have been controlled C+- Vendor's performance was less than expected but still performed an adequate job C- Vendor's performance was less than expected, but most duties were carried out adequately D+- Vendor's performance was not adequate but did not impact the overall day D- Vendor's perfomance was not adequate and impacted the overall day F- Vendor did not perform any duties/Vendor did not show up

Brad- Did it ever occur to you that maybe your sister is a crappy/lazy teacher rather than the "norm"?  There are mediocre people who do the minimum at every job.  With coaching I put in 10 hours a day and often work on Saturdays as well.  This is not "whoa is me" because I choose to make those commitments.  If you want to attract intelligent and qualified people to the teaching profession, then you have to give them something in return. It is a stable job with a good pension and it's great to have summer's off, but I also have a much lower earning potential than many people I associate with.  Also- your sister is an idiot for not having a 403B! Your pension is not enough. She should be putting a minimum of $50-$100 per paycheck in her 403B and most of us put more than that.Chelsea- I 100% agree with you! I think giving someone a "C" has a certain connotation vs giving someone a "Meets Expectations."

It sounds more like your sister is quite the crappy teacher who does not give two cents about her students rather than her having a cushy job.As the daughter of two teachers who worked in the city I can tell you they work unbelievably long and hard hours dealing with children all day long.  And the best is how they are treated to by parents - as if they are babysitters and not teachers.  Never underestimate how hard a teacher works until you are able to do what they do.

By the way Brad, it seems to me that if teachers have it so good and make so much money, that you're in the wrong profession! You think it's so great, then become a teacher. You have the option to.  It's like me complaining that doctors make a lot of money and just see a few patients- when I have no idea what they actually do and have the ability to become one myself if I chose to.

My mistake. I misread. Another reason why I try and stay away from these posts. But it was a quiet day at work and teacher bashing always gets me annoyed.
  • edited December 2011
I don't blame you.  I honestly think teacher bashing is really low.  I mean they get paid crap, work hard (I definitely disagree with brad here...sounds like his family are slackers), and have to put up with parents constantly. IMO, teachers are VERY under appreciated.

So according to Brad's rules regarding wedding reviews, it seems we shouldnt be allowed to post any positive reviews, only negatives. In that case wouldnt there only be all bad reviews floating around and no one would be able to figure out who the good ones are in the sea of all the bad reviews?

Brad - you're a troll. Your comments about teachers are obnoxious and were done just to incite drama. If the women on this board annoy you with their dreams of being a 'pretty princess', then go away. Lurk to get the recs you need, but stop responding.

people will just tend to ignore reviews with all A+s; at least i sure do.  i am happy you had such a great day, but like anything else in life that is over-hyped or advertised, i am skeptical, as i assume brad and many are.
