I think yogurt and mustard are the grossest foods ever.  Just the smell of either of them make me want to hurl.

I think Napoleon Dynamite was the worst movie ever created.  I don't know why people thought it was so funny.  I tried watching it twice, and fell asleep during it.... both times.

I have never read the Hunger Games books or seen the movie either.

Jim Carey annoys me also.  So does Robin Williams.

@tee0715 I agree with Napoleon Dynamite.  I was folding laundry while watching it.  If I hadn't been doing  that, I would have wasted those two hours of my life.

I read the first part of the 50 Shades of Grey and it made me want to remain a virgin forever.  That is some scary crap . . .

On the vaccine debate, I understand that some vaccines should be necessary, but what is with this chicken pox vaccine?  Back in my day, you just got in naturally . . . why do we need a vaccine for it exactly?  There are other ones that I just think are completely unnecessary and shouldn't be mandatory.  I don't get the flu shot -  and if I get the flu, it's my own fault and I'll own that.

My FMIL is on the no-gluten thing just for the sake of it, and it is so annoying.  She will not be able to convince me to stop eating bread.  I love bread, it is delicious, and I am going to appreciate the fact that I can eat bread without dying.

@artbyallie I'm late with agreeing with you on this one, but yes, the hypocrisy in the church is beyond annoying.  They have been fixating on homosexuality like it is the worst thing every and God automatically damns homosexuals.  No, he doesn't - God loves homosexuals.  If He doesn't, I haven't been reading my Bible correctly.  Because I read that Jesus loves everyone.

And also furthering the debate on whether homosexuality is legal and the issue of sodomy - in the medieval period, any sexual position that might not result in pregnancy was considered sodomy.  So if a husband and wife were in a position other than missionary, they were committing sodomy and were therefore going against the law (I know that sounds weird, but apparently anything other than missionary was not having sex for procreation.  As if medieval woman couldn't get pregnant if they weren't lying on their backs).  Also, a man could have sex with another man, but if he was on top, he was not gay, so he was less likely to be condemned.  So back then, you could be guilty of sodomy when being heterosexual, or you could be with men and not be gay.  So sodomy and homosexuality did not go hand in hand then, and I don't think they do now either.

  • My unpopular opinions:

    - I hate mayo. I think it's the grossest thing ever created.
    - I too hate Well Ferrell, Steve Carell, Jim Carry, etc. movies. I call them "stupid boy humor" flicks and tell FI if he wants to see one in theaters, he can find a friend to go with him because I'd rather stay at home. This also includes things like "The Hangover."
    - I believe that reality TV takes advantage of people. I'm not saying I don't watch it sometimes (I like cooking competition shows and things of that nature), but I think shows that are obviously highlighting people's ignorance or socioeconomic status ("Honeybooboo" anyone?) are horrible.
    - I think the idea of "A for effort" or "You tried and lost but here's a trophy anyways" is destroying younger generations. They seem to think that if they do the minimal, they deserve an A. No, an A is given to someone who exceeds expectations, who goes above and beyond in always turning in stellar work, contributing something meaningful to class discussions, etc. (I'm a college professor, if you can't tell). I see students coming through more and more who don't do the work, complain when they receive the grades they deserve (rather than the ones to which they think they are entitled), and wonder how long they will last in their first job before someone fires their whiney butt.

  • @kerbohl Exactly. But I can't exactly go around asking my family and church friends if they think oral sex, for instance, is a sin. Talk about awkward. I mean, they don't even want to listen to me when I point out the churches that are accepting of homosexuality, like the Episcopal Church, for instance. *sigh*

Ditto to EllaYoung's points on vaccinations.  Society has forgotten how aweful childhood diseases used to be (my grandmother remembers kids in her class just going missing from one week to the next because they died regularily from diseases we don't even give a second thought to).  Chicken pox can kill children from high fever.  It's not just a skin condition.

Ahem, now for another unpopular opinion of mine:  I don't mind the existence of the song "Call Me Maybe".  Why?  Because it led to this happening:

My point about the chicken pox vaccine, though, is what difference does it make from getting the shot and having the disease naturally when you are young?  Is there something special about the shot that I don't know about?  My nephews got the pox and it didn't even slow them down, but they would have remembered the needle.  I can see getting it if you haven't had the chicken pox by age 10, but beforehand?

And as to not getting the flu shot and then getting the flu - I've already had people telling me that I'm crazy to not get the flu shot, and therefore if I do get it (even though I wash my hands regularly etc . . .) they will put the blame on me for not getting the shot.  I think they fall into the camp that if you get the flu shot, there is 0% chance of getting the flu.

Oh wait, didn't see Pele's post before mine.  I suppose children can die from the pox, but how common is that in this day and age?

Not a snarky question:  Do you know how vaccinations work?  You don't get the disease when you are vaccinated.  Maybe your nephews didn't get slowed down, but would you feel the same if one had gotten such a high fever that he died, or had brain damage?  It happens. Being flippant about it is like saying "oh, I survived a car crash without a seat belt, obviously they aren't necessary."

ETA to respond to post above:  For the USA, where vaccinations are common, the risk to children is less, but because of something indirect:  pregnant adult women are vaccinated as children, and their fetus is thus protected from the virus.  Fetal infection has the highest mortality rate, as the lungs are heavily damaged by the virus.

So many horrific consequences for avoiding a 6 dollar shot...

  • Retread - I hear you on the chicken pox vaccine.

Here is our story with that - DS is the only one of our kids who fell in the timeline for the vaccine.  All 4 of our girls got chickenpox when they were little, pre vaccine existence.  There were no complications.  Yes, I do know there are rare cases of serious complications and even death.

DS was born in '95, started kindergarten in 2000 and they were just making the vaccine a required one in school.  You could opt out if you filled out a buttload of paperwork.  Don't know if the opt out is still available.

DH and I did a lot of research and discovered the shot is not lifetime and requires boosters starting in the teen years I think.  We researched adults getting chickenpox vs kids getting chickenpox and the complications are MUCH greater for adults than kids.  We studied it long and hard and decided we would be more comfortable if he was able to evade the chickenpox vaccine and deal with getting them.  If he had a documented case of chickenpox we didn't have to get the shot or do the paperwork.  He ended up getting the chickenpox, with no complications.  We still feel this was the right decision for our son.

All 6 grandkids have gotten the vaccine.  I am not dissing any parent who chose that route, we chose not to.

Yes, I am aware of the shingles risk now.  I had shingles 4 months ago.  I am concerned about the boosters not being gotten and risking exposure as an adult.  We felt that was a bigger risk to him than getting the chickenpox.

Just our story and our decision.  We still feel it was the right one for us.
    .
One other thing for the record.  I have spoken many times about DS having Asperger's.  We do not and never have thought his vaccines caused this.  I remember though thinking how devastating it was when the scientist who came up with that crap got busted and the lies came out.  How many kids weren't vaccinated because a well-respected scientist was too busy trying to make a name for himself?  Were any children harmed by that?  That makes me ragey.

    I hate mayo, too.

I liked Will Ferrel in Elf, but agree with everything else you said about comedians.

I agree I think that TLC and other channels are taking advantage of people like honey booboo or even the amish show that they have on there.
I agree with you that not everyone should get a trophy.  I have taken pride when I have gotten my first prize medals, but I got random trophy for soccer (when we went 2-20).  I don't get why they wasted their money on that when we did not win any of our seasons.
    Yay, I'm not alone!!

@peledreamsofrain My knowledge of vaccines may be a little screwed - I was always told that it is a mild strain of the disease that your body should then quickly develop an immunity to.

It absolutely can be.  The mist vaccine for the flu is an attenuated (weakened) form of the flu that your body sees and then creates antibodies for.  The flu shot is actually just parts from the outside of the flu virus.  Your body just needs to "see" something from the outside of the virus to create antibodies (usually) so they decide which is easier: attenuating the virus or going for smaller parts.  If you get the attenuated virus, then you'll "get" the virus and have mild flu symptoms; if you are injected with parts of the virus, you never become infected.  (The flu shot can't "give" you the flu!)

I'm actually not sure which method is used for the chicken pox vaccine, but I tend to think its the parts of the virus method.  The HPV vaccine is absolutely smaller parts of the human papillomavirus.
  • I will definitely get my kids the chicken pox vaccine. I had it in 5th grade and it was miserable - had it everywhere (EVERYWHERE). And then, all the stress of dealing with MIL in January led to a fantastically fun case of the shingles. I wouldn't put my kids through that if there is a way to prevent it.

I think the point is that chicken pox CAN be deadly, even though it is relatively rare. And, I point blank lie when people ask me if I've had a flu shot. There is no reason for them to know my medical business and even less reason for me to get an ill-informed lecture based on my answer.
I got chicken pox in 7th grade.  I missed almost 3 weeks of school, and developed encephalitis.  I was hospitaized for a week.  This was back in the 70's
That being said, I deliberately exposed my kids to chicken pox when they were toddlers.  The vax was not invented yet, and my ped told me the younger you are the milder the symptoms.  So true, they all had maybe 20-30?  I had them everywhere.

  • I need to start lying about the flu shot.  I've had a bad reaction to it every single time I've gotten it.  Once it was so bad I had lingering pain for six months after getting the shot.  I now don't get it.  If I get the flu, I will deal with it (and not come to work to get people infected).  It annoys me when people realize that I haven't gotten the flu shot that I'm anti-vaccine and lecture me.  I don't need a lecture.  I just want to be able to use my arm for more than half of the year...

I wish. At age seven I missed two weeks of school and was completely and utterly covered, but okay otherwise. My two year-old sister was also covered, but was puking, lethargic, and had scary-high fevers, leading to a couple ice baths (mom called the hospital and they told her that if she came they would make her pay for the entire ward of quarantine zone they would be forced to make).
I had them over my 4th birthday.  I don't remember feeling sick though, just itchy.  But all the family came over with their kids to play with me so their kids could get them too.  I was the oldest and they figured get them infected and over it sooner rather than later.  It was like a big chicken pox party

  • Whoever said they hate mayo is my hero. It is disgusting. I also hate popcorn and coconut. And chocolate chip mint ice cream. Apparently I have many strong food aversions.

Oh and I don't like the Big Lebowski. I've watched it multiple times and I just don't like it. FI can't understand it. It's not funny to me at all.

Pretty interesting reading all of these. Here go mine:

I think weed should be legal, taxed and regulated like alcohol and cigarettes. I think polygomy should be legal between consenting adults. Just because you marry someone, DOES NOT mean you fall in love with their children. It doesnt always happen. If you tolerate them, and treat them fairly, sometimes that is the best case. I couldnt even get through half of 50 Shades and dont want to. I think euthanasia should be legal. I think anything other than true medical reasons should not be considered when people decide to not vax. I dont care if you had a vaginal, c-section, had an epidural, or went all out water birth. Each and every one is a true birth. I do not think formula feeding moms are bad, nor do I think working moms are paying someone to raise their children. I believe in medication assisted drug treatment. I hate the word tacky. I hate tomatoes and have never seen Monty Python. I do not understand the whole deal with Rocky Horror. Ive seen it once and thought it was the most ridiculous thing ever. Although, time warp was an awesome song/dance. I think entitelment is getting way the hell out of hand. No, not everyone needs to be invited to a birthday party or make a team. I hate parents that think their kid if above everyone else and never does wrong. I hate the Cardinals Baseball team!! HATE HATE HATE!!!!! Makes it hard living across the river from STL, but Im a Chicago fan through and through. Its called POP not soda. May be back with more.  And yes, some kids need medication for their diagosis. Not all parents just want to drug up their kids. And not all kids with a diagnosis is a bad kid.

All her songs sound the same to me. I honestly do not get why people love her, she's not all that original.

I also dislike when people post mirror pics

Not really a fan of pregnant belly pics either - especially when they're on facebook. I know being pregnant can be a happy time, but still, I don't want to see pictures of your stomach - pregnant or not. Makes me feel awkward. A friend of my best friend actually posted mirror pics of her pregnant belly. I judged super hard. lol.

European mayo is better than North American mayo.  But in my opinion it is still gross.  And they put it on their fries here - they don't usually have ketchup as an option!  It's craziness!

Oh and @shilotony2012, I think the "pop" versus "soda" thing is cultural.  I could be wrong, but in Canada it is more likely to be called "pop" and in the States it is "soda"?  Or am I mixing those up?  I'm Canadian, and I say "pop" . . .

Its regional. I hate the word soda with a passion. No idea why, but it just sounds gross and I hate the word. Anyway, where Im from its pop. Where I live now its smack dab in soda country. I mean, seriously, when I go out to eat and ask for a pop, they give me a wierd look and I have to clarify and say Sprite or something because I hate that word, lol.

I think some of it depends on which side of the Mason-Dixon line you live on.  Here in Texas, we call it soda, although generically, most people I know just ask for a Coke, even if all they serve is Pepsi.

But, I won't lie, I hate Pepsi.  I drink it.  But anytime I order a coke, and they ask "Is Pepsi okay?" I just want to say "No.  No it isn't.  Gimmie a damn coke."

And I just KNOW better than to even ask for Cherry Coke.  No one carries that shit, and it's the bomb diggity.

I hate this song as well - doesn't mean I haven't listened to or don't like other songs by him, but this song really gets on my nerves. It is played constantly, it gets stuck in my head, and I can't stand it. It is the one and only song on the "no play" list for my wedding, because one of my BMs is obsessed with it - she made me watch the music video for it and then listen to it on repeat a good 5 times during my bachelorette party. I did it to be polite and not hurt her feelings, but I really just don't like the song. Again, that doesn't mean I haven't heard his other music nor does it mean I'm "judging" the rapper himself.
