Is There An Afternoon Thread....

Re: Is There An Afternoon Thread....

  • Yay that the work at your house is almost done, Rach!  And thanks for the well wishes for DD.

AATB, I used to love interviewing, but yours sounds funner... I used to love getting resumes in the mail and trying to picture what the people looked like based on their name, info, etc.  Most of the time I was dead wrong, but it was still amusing.

Button...Orajel sucks...try getting this rinse called Peroxil. It's over the counter and it really works for me when I get the stupid canker sores.  It kind of numbs, but the peroxide is also a nice disenfectant.  That and it doesn't taste awful.  You can find it on the dental care aisle at the drug store.

  • Trader Joe's has sort of a niche market. They have a lot of organic and imported products, so it definitely has a "wow" factor. You can buy all sorts of things there. It's never replaced my regular grocery store, but I do go there often to find ingredients I can't get anywhere else, a healthier type of soup, and the random "what the hell is this stuff" food.

They also have their own brand of cereal and other items, and the prices are comparable to the larger grocery stores.

It's a lot like Whole Foods, but without the expense.
  • I'm at work for another 90 minutes. I just got a call from  the recruiter for the job I interviewed for recently that they chose someone else. Sad times. This news is NOT motivating me to do my actual job, though it probably should!

We are having dinner with FI's grandmother tonight and she is very excited that we're "finally" getting married so I'm looking forward to that.

  • AATB, that makes sense. I don't think I've ever lived somewhere that had local groceries. Wait, no. There was a small one in my old town that was called "City Market". It's nickname was "Shitty Market", so that should give you an idea on how well kept it was. I only went there for things when I was already in the cooking process and realized I didn't have something since it was only a block away.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Is There An Afternoon Thread.... : Fargo has wanted one for the longest time but I don't think I want one here.  I really like our local grocery stores, and while Trader Joe's often has great deals, I do worry about it taking business from our local markets.

  • That's not good Holly!

I still haven't forgiven TJ's for no longer carrying whole vanilla beans.

  • We have a Safeway and  Walmart. There is an IGA, but it's very poorly stocked and ridiculously expensive. They cater to the students here, so I avoid the IGA if I can.
  • Yeah Lizzie it's been interesting.  The resumes and cover letters are kind of easy to pick people from because some people look great on paper.  Then I listened to some audio reels.  My God.  This one guy I really liked on paper sounded like he was doing his "podcasts" from his basement bedroom in his mom's house.  He literally just has hour long solo ramblings of him thinking out loud.  And he wants to host a talk show, lol.

Broadcast is the best industry to work in.  It's easy because I think you've either "got it," or you just don't.  Makes it easy to weed through the applicants.

  • Ditto Wrigley. They have a lot of organic and interesting food that's pretty inexpensive. They have a lot of frozen things- meat, vegetables, fruit, but also fun frozen meals, pizzas, appetizers, etc. It definitely won't replace my normal grocery store, but there are some things I will use it for. They have this awesome garlic naan that we like with a curried chicken salad. They also have Applegate Farms natural lunch meat for a dollar (or more) cheaper than the local co-op. I love the co-op, but nearly $6 for like, 6 oz of lunchmeat is usually too much. I think last time I went to TJ's it was $4.89.

  • We had a TJ open up fairly close to where I live recently and the grand opening made the news because of the people lined up around the block to get inside. I was shocked. I mean, they do have some cool stuff but at the end of the day it's a grocery store people!

  • I like the TJ's frozen food selection. Frozen vegetables and fruit are CHEAP. I got a pound of frozen organic blueberries for $3 when Kroger was charging $8.50 for non-organic ones.

Their $3 bottles of wine don't suck. It's what our church serves at receptions and parties and stuff.
  • I just finished a SUPER thrilling filing project.  I'm ready to get out of here but I'm staying late for yoga.

Which is worse, emailing a two week notice or waiting until Monday to do it in person but keeping the same date of departure (so a shorter notice)?

Yeah, I laughed when they opened a Kohl's and TJ Maxx in my parents' town. Granted, it's a small town, and they always had to drive an hour to buy clothes (so I totally sympathize), but still. :)<div>
</div><div>I think it's like Trashy said, though. There's something about getting there before the clothes have been tried on 100 times and they still have a large size range to choose from.</div>
  • A, could you notify your boss tomorrow afternoon instead? I agree that in person seems better.

I like the local chains around me. My family used to always shop at Walmart so that was what I did too.  But then I was looking to try and make something and I could not find what I needed at Walmart so I went to one of the local stores.  Found it in less than 5 minutes.  Now I love the local grocery stores around me.  They have great prices too.

  • Ohh, there are several ethnic groceries near me that are pretty great. There's a Mexican one not too far and the other week they had red, yellow, and orange bell peppers on sale for $.49 a pound! I got like, 8 of them for about $1.50. It was redic. (My local grocery stores usually sell them for $2.99-$4.99/lb depending on color.)

  • She's out the whole week, otherwise I'd do it tomorrow.

Rach, I don't think it'll be too hard of a position to fill, and the woman that does the new biz stuff shouldn't have any problem taking over until they fill my position.

  • Our local chains are crap other than Fairway which is 12 blocks uptown from me.

There are 3 Whole Foods but they are not close and are very expensive.

I adore TJs but it's a trip down to 14th Street and I don't walk all that well yet..  That will change, soon, I hope!
  • I think that there is a TJ's opening somewhere in Houston, but I know it will be too far away for me to drive to.

I hope that they will expand into this entire market.  Right now I shop at Randall's and HEB.  Occasionally Kroger.  They really pissed me off when they stopped doubling and tripling coupons.  Randalls still does, just not unlimited quantities like Kroger used to do.

I'm sort of craving crawfish stuffing in a squash boat.
  • Rach! I haven't seen this haircut yet!!!

    Button, PM back.

The Mexican store we go to has Coke with real sugar in glass bottles. I get it as a treat sometimes. :)
  • We used to call Whole Foods "Whole Paycheck". That place is ri-damn-diculous.
