[QUOTE]Musu - I have a totally random question for you. In every ballet movie/show I've ever seen, they make a big thing of the dancers banging/burning/ripping/sewing etc. their pointe shoes. How come the shoe makers don't just make them the way dancers want them to begin with?

    <div>
</div><div>Pointe shoes really need to be formed to a specific foot. Shoe companies make like a billion different models to fit basic "types" of feet, but everyone's feet are different. Fixing them to shape your actual foot makes the shoe much more comfortable, so that's why. :)</div>

  • Ah, I get it. So like everyone does different things to their shoes. I was always curious about that.
  • I never did QUITE the exaggeration of what the show in movies but still some stuff. The best trick I did was getting them wrapped in a moist hand towel and microwaving it for a bit, then putting them on immediately and doing some releves.

  • Cool! How do you even stand, let alone dance, en pointe? I mean, I know it takes years of training to be able to get to that point, but how do you DO that?
  • Hi guys.
KJB-I don't know if you saw mypost in the morning thread-can I PM you? I'm looking for a particular vintage Pyrex pattern.

  • Haha, well toe pads are a huge help. I know a lot of the professional ballerinas don't use them much and that is insanity to me. I've danced without them but it sucks ass. Toe pads are really a life saver. But yeah there is a lot of ankle strength training prior to going en pointe. I did like one or two years of pre pointe first, which I also taught later to other kids. It is a TON of ankle work.

  • Toe pads? I always thought your toes were up against a piece of wood.
  • There actually is no wood in a pointe shoe, oh my god that would hurt. Usually it is hardened burlap with glue or something similar. Thats why when you make it wet and heat it up, it softens the box (flat part that looks like a box) and the shank (sole of the shoe) to form to your foot.

  • Toe pads go inside of the shoe, they are optional. The look like little socks for your toes:

    or gel type:

  • Fezz - Your baby is beautiful. I can't see most photos from work due to security. For some reason tonight all of the photos are showing up! It's great...

John had to work today near my mom's house, so he dropped me off at her house at 6:30 and we spent the day junk shopping. I scored some pretty cool clothes at the junk shop bag sale and neat dress at Goodwill.

We're so bad we forgot to go shopping for Father's Day dinner. LOL

Now I'm sitting here in the coffee shop working. John is already in bed asleep. My motivation to work is lacking tonight.

  • Hey eags! I love buying new dog toys. Even if they are destroyed in minutes. Especially now since we have given up on trying to teach Tory and Willow to have their own toys. Every toy becomes shared. And by shared I mean if its being played it, it is simultaneously in both of their mouths.
    image
  • Haha Musu, that's cute! Sash is the only one that has toys that are just hers. She snuggles with them. It's funny that she knows/cares which ones are hers. She knows them by name. The ones I give to the other dogs she couldn't care less about.
  • lol, all these years I thought the toes were made out of wood. I'm dumb.
  • Nah you're not dumb! I can see why it would look that way based on the shape of them. I still have all of my pointe shoes in our closet. I couldn't get rid of them, each pair has a lot of blood, sweat and even a few tears in them, haha.
    image
  • I love how excited they get when they realize they get a new toy too. Sooo sweet. <3

[QUOTE]Steffi, if I worked as much as you do I would have a nervous breakdown.

It's really bad right now, but should slow back down to my regular 60 - 70 hours the end of next month. However, my cohort and I might have a shared room in the mental ward before this is over!

I found a sign for my desk to replace one of the snarky Pinterest signs it says -

    Be Wise
    Be Nice
    Be True

  • 60-70 hrs per WEEK? hell no.

  • Since we're sorta talkin dance, heres a trip back in time:

I'm front and center here -- we were coming down from a leap but I still think its a good shot.

Musu, what a nice shot! I can see why they put you front and center!
  • haha thanks Aryn. It was exciting since I was always the tallest so it was rare that I got to be RIGHT up in the front. Shorties had advantages there.

    Hey everyone,

I'm just about to have dinner. I just tried to make chicken pot pie, so I hope it turns out well.

Steffi, I could never work that many hours.  I was driving myself insane working 30-35 hours a week and taking 18 credit hours during school. I have no idea how you do it.

Musu, I envy you.  I can't dance.  But I think it is really freaking cool.  But that dance shot is awesome.

I think I worked 87 last week, probably close to 95 for this week.

My normal is 60 - 70, which I'm fine with. While John is still on the road I'll work 3 long days while he's out of town, and a few hours on the weekends. Since I can work my overtime from home, it's not too bad, and the money is really nice. These hours are just crazy long and I'm working all the time, even when he's home, and I don't get to see him (unless you count me sitting in my chair working, him sitting in his playing PS3), I'm really stressed over work, and it's coming out in my general 'I hate the world, fucck people' attitude lately.

  • For Daff :

9th grade pointe dance -- we got to dye our pointe shoes silver and I was soooo excited about it. But totally my awkward stage, haha.

  • I loved my dance class in HS. My teacher said I had an incredible knack for picking up choreography. I kinda wish I'd started dancing when I was younger, maybe I would have been really good. Oh well.

    That's a beautiful shot, you're so talented.

  • Hey Eags. Yes. Hopefully, seeing will guilt me into starting to whittle down my pile. Did your boos, chill at all before you left?
Daff, They do look, and sound a little like wood. Soem of the early ones were made with a kind of paper-mache.

  • Thanks guys. Steffi, I don't know how you do it. Sure you're making a lot of money but you must not have much time to enjoy that extra money! I hope things calm down for you.

  • What kind of dance did you do in HS Aryn?

Thank you, they will calm down in a few weeks.

We're almost out of debt except for the house and have savings and reserves and we've bought some cool toys. If things are still like they are now at work I'm leaving next June - we'll be down to just the house payment, the wedding will be paid for, and hopefully John will have another job where he can carry our insurance. That's the light at the end of the tunnel, it's distant, but it's there!
