  • 1. How do you feel about guns in general? I'm fine with them, as long as they are stored properly and everyone in the house receives proper education.  I qualified expert with an M-16 when I was in the Marine Corps, and enjoyed the rifle range very much.
    2. Do you own any weapons? What do you take out with you? What do you keep at home and how do you keep it? We have a 9mm but no concealed carry permit.  It's locked up at home.
    3. Ever had to use it  or would you? Or is it there for other reasons?  We take it with us when we go camping and hunting for emergencies.  Occasionally we go to the shooting range, because I like target shooting.  Not a fan of hunting, unless you're going to eat the meat.

My dad owns a crossbow. I just killed my first deer with it a couple weekends ago. J also owns a bow, but it's not a crossbow. Neither of them are kept on nightstands though.

Has anyone else dislocated a shoulder and successfully shot a rifle/shotgun/muzzleloader again without reinjuring yourself? It just makes me nervous. Handguns are no problem.

I would be nervous, too! They do make pads that go on the butt of the gun that absorb all the recoil from them, though. Maybe look into those?

I've thought about that and I know my dad has a few of those pads. I can shoot both left- and right-handed, I'm just a better aim right-handed. All I can picture in my mind is the force making my shoulder pop out again. *shudders in pain*

There's a certain spot you aim at a deer to ensure a kill. And no, the arrow exits the other side.

Ouch, Mara! I'd be hesitant. Have you tried shooting with the opposite hand using the opposite shoulder? I'm right-handed, but I golf left-handed and I can shoot with either. I bet with some practice you could work your other shoulder while the injury heals completely.

ETA: NM! You were replying while I was replying! I'd practice up and strengthen your left-hand shooting, and then if you ever take a hit in one shoulder, you'll be able to firefight back with your other one. :) Not that you'll ever need to use that talent, but it's good to have it!

  • In all seriousness, I don't have a problem with people having them as long as they are licensed and respectful of the responsibilities that come with owning one.

I don't own one and the only gun I've shot was a BB gun.

One day I'd like to learn how to shoot a gun and keep one or two locked away safely in my home in case I need one. Whether that will be because of thiefs or zombies remains to be seen.

Not even remotely close, but thank you. :) I just have an almost primal protective nature when it comes to my kids. NC law clearly allows me to shoot your ass if you cross my threshold with intent to harm me, and I have absolutely no problem doing so to protect my girls. And not one neuron in my brain will fire so much as an iota of guilt in doing so. I may even drag your ass inside if I feel threatened enough by you in my yard. ;)

HOWEVER, once when I was 9 or 10 I had a BB gun and I aimed at a tiny bird on our clothesline beside our pool, knowing I'd never hit it. I shot it between the eyes. I bawled for two days over that innocent bird, and I bet that BB gun is still behind my mom's fridge where I tossed it, never wanting to see it again. I do have a heart, just not one for criminals. :)

Totally understandable. I don't hve kids but I'd do the same for some of my family members or FI.

Aww, poor birdy. My grandfather told me a story about having a BB gun when he was about 7 or 8 years old and also shooting a bird. At the time it didn't bother him (he was just doing what little boys did in Ireland in the 1920's). But years later, he was wracked with guilt over it.
  • 1. How do you feel about guns in general?
I think we have the right to protect ourselves however we see fit.

    2. Do you own any weapons? What do you take out with you? What do you keep at home and how do you keep it?
I have mace.  A friend I work with was raped after work last year in the parking garage we park in.  Usually we walk out together, that night she didnt wait for me.  I found her and called the police.  I will never let that happen to me.
    3. Ever had to use it  or would you? Or is it there for other reasons?
I would use it in a heartbeat.  I plan on getting my gun license very soon.

  • I don't mind hunting, and I appreciate those who do hunt and share the meat with me, but I just could never shoot an innocent animal. (Aside from the baby bird I still feel guilt over, 25 years later!) I love deer and fish and other things that are hunted, but I can't do it.

I used to have to clean the fish I caught with my dad, and I don't even like fishing anymore because of it. I think if I had to clean animals to survive I could do it, but I really hope it never comes to that.
