post your favorite wedding dance songs!

Re: post your favorite wedding dance songs!

• we actually had a dj also to do the mc stuff and the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and beginning of reception. we had the same concerns as you as far as having a non-wedding band, so we worked it out that way so we could have it both ways. it wasn't the cheapest route to go, but music was the most important aspect for us since it's such an important aspect of our lives. in fact, we met at a phish show.

but even if you don't have a band like that at your wedding, live music rules and i'm sure your wedding will be a blast!

I can't believe you met at a Phish show!  That's so crazy :)  How many shows have you been to?  Do you post on phantasytour?  I've been to 8, but FI is up to 33 now.  We were thisclose to going to the Greek in Berkley for 3 nights for our honeymoon, but I convinced him that we needed to do something just the 2 of us, and we're doing deer creek when we get back.

Music is the most important part for us too, and our friends would have LOVED a wedding like yours, but we have ton (like 200) family members alone at the wedding and needed to go with something a little more mainstream to please everyone.  I think we're going to be happy with our decision.  And we're having a DJ at our rehearsal dinner to play more jam bandy music for us.

yeah - it was really crazy how we met. it was at hampton 99. i had gone solo (had just been dumped by a guy that i had been planning on doing some fall tour and big cypress with). h and friend were sitting right behind me. they were commenting on the fun jetta they saw drive in with the maryland version of friend's virginia personalized license plate. i turned around and said, "that's my car!" so we hung out for the show and had a blast, met up at the show the next night and had a blast again, and then i ended up meeting up with him and a bunch of his friends in richmond and went down to big cypress with them. it was the start of a friendship that turned into a romance several years down the line.

i've been to about 55 shows now. next up: TELLURIDE!! i'm so excited for that!

as your attorney, i recommend you go to the greek as part of your san francisco honeymoon.
• as your opposing counsel, I must file this motion in opposition to your request for our honeymoon to be at the greek.

I'd love to go, but I don't want to spend my honeymoon week crashing on friends couches in the bay area, which is what I know we'd do since we'd want to spend time with our friends who live out there.  We're going to Vancouver instead.

That's such a great "how I met" story!
• oh, well vancouver doesn't suck. fair enough!

i love our story. <3
• Jill, just looked at your married bio and it looked like a gorgeous wedding.  We are having the same colored flowers!

looking at everyone's bio kind of makes me think I should make one?  But I feel like its a lot of exposure on the internet.  Not sure.
• yes, you should make one! you don't need to put your full name, photo, or vendors if you don't want to.
• Swing by DJ Nasty
Yeah by Usher
The Rockafeller Skank by Fatboy Slim
Lean'n by Top Floor
Move Shake Drop Remix by DJ Laz, Flo Rida, and Casely

Good dancing songs!!
• "Brass Monkey" by the Beastie Boys is usually a favorite by everyone. But if you want obscure.. "Oh, You Touched My Tra la la" by Gunther and the Sunshine Girls. I have never been anywhere that this song hasn't had people dancing to it. It is slightly inappropriate, so depending how many people might get offended I wouldn't recommend it. (I am totally playing this at my wedding) :)
• Jungle Drums by Emiliana Torrini -- very fun and catchy... as far as i'm aware it was only a hit in Germany...
• "Scrubs" -TLC
"Cha-Cha Slide"-DJ Casper
"Give it Up"-KC & The Sunshine Band
"Macarena"-Los Del Rio
"Dancing Queen"-ABBA
"Conga"-Gloria Estefan
"Tootsie Roll"-69 Boyz
"I Wanna Dance With Somebody"-Whitney Houston
"Yeah!"-Usher
"Boom, Boom, Pow"-Black Eyed Peas
"I Gotta Feelin"-Black Eyed Peas
"Just Dance"-Lady Gaga
"Respect"-Aretha Franklin
"YMCA"-The Village People
"Celebration"-Kool & The Gang
"Walk This Way"-Aerosmith
"Please Don't Stop the Music"-Rihanna

These are the songs in my head that are a must-have at my reception. Hope it helped at all. Happy Friday, all.

"Love at First Sting"
• If you are looking for VERY obscure......

Poak Chops by Tamechi

...it's very obscure...but has a nice beat for dancing. :)

• If I were having a big dance reception I would definitely try to include a lot of Motown hits. Music from that era is a hit with everyone.
Lori
• I love Bob Seger, so old time rock n roll is always a good one

Can't go wrong with Bon Jovi

The twist - chubby checker

love shack

if you put on a few modern day sogs, rhianna, etc you might get the younger crowd up.

Jitterbugs/swing music

• floor fillers for me would be  like the macarana and Saturday night

• what about...
...sweet caroline
...kiss me by sixpence
...just dance by lady gaga
...lucky by jason mraz
...fantasy remix by mariah carey and odb
...boom boom pow black eyed peas

Anniversary
• parker and daffodil - thanks for the ideas for Phish songs.  I hadn't come up with any yet, and you gave me some great ideas, especially You Enjoy Myself, Boogie On Reggae Woman, and Possum.  A lot of the crowd probably won't get it, but I'm definitely going to choose a couple of them :)

I also want to add, as an awesome, sexy, slow dance song "That's Where It's At" by Sam Cooke.  Give it a listen on youtube.
Our DJ played the Electric Slide 3 times and the dance floor was packed every single time.  Drunk people really enjoy it, apparently.
Posted by Brie2010
They probably like it because it tells them what to do, so no thinking necessary.

ETA:  Oops, I guess I was thinking of "Cha-Cha Slide."  Sorry.
• Love tunak tunak tun and numa numa - they're both songs that have actually been used by a summer camp organization I work with, so there are several thousand kids who know line dances to them now!  :)

If you're looking for great dance music that your band doens't know, it might not be a bad idea to look for other foreign songs.  For example, Basshunter is great for dance/techno, you could check out any of the Eurovision song contest entries (all on Eurovision's website and youtube), and there's a great jumpstyle song "Rock That Beat" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A19fJKpNqzw&feature=related).  It's a work out but TONS of fun.
• May not be full blown appropriate in parts...but I love Arrested Development, "Everyday People"

It is so fun to dance to!
• Four Seasons - just too good to be true
Hot Chip - One Life Stand
And so wedding inappropriate (I like inappropriate ) but definitely gets me and my girls up and singing -- Meatloaf - Dashboard Light!
What about some Talking Heads, too?
And James Brown is perfect.  We've got the funk.  Gotta have the funk.
Love the one you're with (can't remember who sings it, but I love dancing to it)
Otis Redding - Try a little Tenderness

What about some stones for just feeling good, too?  Maybe that is better rehersal dinner after party music.  CCR is good too.

Here is my ipod strategy, I have written down every song that I know I like and/or makes me want to dance, then I enter it into Pandora.  I constantly get new ideas this way.  If you have time to do this, you can come up with soooo many new ideas.  Have fun ladies!
• I'm having all ipod all the time at our wedding, so I've been built up way too many hours of music. Some of the more odd ones are Flame by BellX1, I wanna be like you done by Big Bad voodoo Daddy, More by Bobby Darin, Mahna, Mahna done by Cake, Cha Cha twist by the Detroit Cobras, When I'm up (I can't get down) by Great Big Sea, Joy Ride by the Killers, Jump Jive an wail by Louis Prima, Sleepyhead by Passionpit, Wooly Bully by Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs, I turn my camera on by spoon, Let teh Beat Control you by Tilly and the wall, Selfish Jean by Travis, That's not my Name by the Ting Tings, and The whole of the moon by the Waterboys
• We are dancing to "Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World" by IZ (the big Hawaiian guy - it was at the end of 50 First Dates). We are entering the reception to "All I Want is You" by Barry Louis Polsar (as heard during the opening credits of Juno). My wedding party/parents are entering the chapel to "Its Been a Long Time Running" by the Tragically Hip and I am walking down the aisle to "Auto Rock" by Mogwai.

SOOOO EXCITED!!! 8 more days!

• Return of the MAC
The Hustle
Suavecito
This is how we do it
• I think Michael Jackson Thriller is a great song.. I know we are going to have our dj play fun music. We are a very fun couple and I love to dance!!!! These song Ideas are great!!!

Photobucket We're Married!!!!
• I have found that Paul Simon's "You can call me Al" goes over really well with any age group. The band that is playing at my wedding does a fantastic cover and everyone loves dancing to it.
• Off the top of my head:

80's songs are always fun. There' more rock/New wave like Romantic's "what I like about you" or Van Halen's "Jump" and Journey's "don't stop belivin'" is always a fave.

I've seen Earth Wind & Fire's "September" get a crowd really dancing, and isn't as overused as Kool and the Gang's "Celebration" You can never go wrong with Stevie Wonder.

90's? man, sooo many good songs. Lenny Kravitz's "are you going my way" Len "steal my sunshine" Mighty MIghty Bosstone's "Impression that I get" Chumbawanba "tub thumping"

Michael Franti's current song "hey, I love you" is super fun. Noisettes are fun too.
• The Violent Femmes "Blister In The Sun" has always been a crowd pleaser in my experience.  :)
• I would suggest "You Never Can Tell" by Chuck Berry if you want a funky one. It's the one from Pulp Fiction where Uma and John dance!
• At the wedding I just went to, Hey Ya by Outkast was one of the biggest hits I completely forgot about this song, but now I'm putting it in my wedding song rotation.
