[QUOTE]Koda, some credit card machines print that line automatically. I don't tip at places like that. I've heard some chatter recently that the new standard is to tip 25-30% at restaurants. When I was a server 15% was standard and now it's up to 20%. I've worked as a server and bartender so I know how important tips are, but I wonder how high these "standards" of tipping are going to go?

Eff that. I'm still going to tip 20% minimum and if the server is really great I'll tip more.

oh, eff that Duds. I tip 10% if it's crappy service and 20% for normal good service. H and I have tipped far above that when we've had fantastic service, though. I want my 30-35% tip to, you know, mean something. Like actually make the person realize we really appreciated their service.

Not to mention, most restaurants are charging more for the same food, so a % proportionally is a higher tip anyway. It's not like it takes more effort for you to bring me a $15 hamburger than the same burger last year at $10.

ETA: I'm not tipping the oil change guy. They set their own prices. Charge more if you think your service is worth more.
• Thanks folks. I think I'll try to change in the shower.

This may make me sound stupid, but I don't understand why tipping is getting so high. I tip 15% for someone who just barely manages to do the basics of their job, and I go up to 20% for someone who did a good job.

I don't understand why anyone would expect 25-30%, and I've waited tables.
• Tip 30%? Hell we'd never go out to eat if that was expected. We do 20% unless the server is absolutely awful.

[QUOTE]Ok so no on the mechanic. I feel like I can't get tipping straight anymore. My mom never tipped my hair dresser growing up and didn't realize you should until I was in college. Duds- 25-30%? That's insane. I'll do 20% for good service, average gets 18% and crappy between 10 and 15.

You're not supposed to tip if they own the salon (or rent the chair, I think.) Basically, if they set their own prices, it's not necessary. At least that's what I've heard. (Same line of thinking with wedding vendors who own their own companies.)
• Along the lines of tipping/extra charges - is it normal to be charged extra for dry cleaning whites? I took in a bunch of sweaters and jackets for dry cleaning the other week and was charged an extra $1 for anything that was white. WTH did that start?
image
• My hairdresser just started her own salon. I've always tipped her, since she worked for someone else the entire time I've been going to her. Would it be weird to suddenly stop tipping?
• special, I'd wait and see what she does with her rates, personally.

The person I go to now owns her chair or whatever, but she's so reasonable, I feel bad not tipping her. (I'm talking $75 for my eyebrows waxed, and cut and dye. With extra time scheduled for my thick hair.)
• Special - I shower and get dressed at the Y every day. There are a lot of old people at this particular Y, which is further motivation to go every day (naked old people are scary). The only thing I'm self conscious about is the difference in, um, grooming habits. Apparently it's a generational thing.

• I tip owners. I don't care if they own the place or not. It makes me uncomfortable not doing so. H's customers give him bonuses and tips even though he is the owner and is paid more, because he does a great job and they are recognizing that. So, I feel like I should do the same.

There are some no-tipping salons (the place where I got my wedding hair and makeup done is one of them) so maybe your mom went to one? It will probably be clearly posted at their register if they have a no-tipping policy.

I tip 20% unless service is bad. H hates leaving a bad tip though even if the server was awful. We went to a restaurant once where the following things all happened: there was no silverware when we got seated, and then after we got our beers (which took forever and were lukewarm) the server was like "I need you to move to another table because we just had a big group come in and they need to sit here because it's the biggest table that's still open" and the new table was right by the kitchen, ugh; and then she promised us a free dessert for moving tables which we never got. I felt that a low or no tip was warranted and H was all "Noooo she's just doing her job, servers don't get paid enough!" I think he ended up tipping "only" 10%. =/

We had the same issue with our company bill too. There would be a ton a 411 charges and everyone has either a iPhone, Blackberry or droid. They finally told them that if it continued they would be charged. There would be like $60+ in just 411 on a single user.

First of all, I would double check the prices and make sure it really adds up to $335 because sometimes they stretch the discount to make it look better than it is.

You can put it together or tell the front desk person that you wanted to tip X on the massage and X on the facial.

I use 411 while I'm actually driving and there are no red lights in sight to stop at and google a number.

I also agree with duds about mom and foods. My mom makes an amazing chicken noodle soup and it kills me that mine isn't as good even though I do what she does.

My random thoughts are about my dogs. Do they have thoughts? If so, what are they thinking? Are their thiughts in English? Or in bark?

• On tipping:
when I was a to-go girl I got paid a decent hourly wage so tips weren't necessary but nice. When I was a bartender I make $3 an hour, so a tip was better on to-go but only a like a buck or so. Not a full 20%
(And yea 20% is still legit unless you get something for free or killer service.)

Whites: when I worked at a dry cleaners we didn't do that. That sounds like rip off to me, but what if they only do whites with whites and need to supplement the cost of having to do smaller loads so they can turn around the clothers in a shorter time. That is probably the logic but it doesn't make it right.
• I have a semi-baby related random thought. How the hell do clinics and doctors and insurances come up with costs for things? I just looked at the 'bill' from my first appt. The original charges were almost $1800 (u/s, labs, nurse visit, and a dr charge for reading the u/s.) But the final amount paid by insurance was like $1050. (With no responsibility to me.)

If I went in without insurance, would the clinic have held me to that full amount? Would I get the same 'deal' as the insurance company? so confusing.

Uh, companies don't have to participate in Groupon, so that's lame if the guy was whining about it.

Right? Does the business have to choose to offer to run a Groupon deal??

Same here. My mom makes the best peach pancakes in the world. I love them so much. Anytime I try to make them myself, they never come out the right texture/flavor, and she gets it right EVERY TIME!

One of her first jobs was as a candy dipper at See's Candies in SoCal, and every year for Easter she makes these chocolate-dipped fudge eggs and we would decorate them with her piping bags of frosting. I made an argyle one back in 2008 with pink and green frosting. It was awesome. And they taste amazing. I'm going to try to talk her into sending me one this year.

That stuff confuses me too. I watche a tv show and some kid didn't have insurance. He went to the doctor and it was only $100. I would have thought a doctor visit without insurance would have been much higher.

• When we drove to myrtle beach from PA and passed all these random houses with nothing around them,I always wonder where their grocery stores and schools are. Do they ride a bus? Or is it to far away and someone has to drive them? What do they do for fun and can they just randomly go out to the store for one ingredient or is it too far away? What happens if there is a health emergency? How far away is the hospital?

You get a discount because you have insurance. If you didn't have insurance, you'd have to pay the entire amount.

Example: I have high deductible insurance, which means I pay out of pocket for everything until I reach my deductible. So when I had to go to the ER, the entire total for all my stuff was around $5500. But because I had insurance, I got a discount and only ended up with around $4500 in actual cost.

Insurance companies contract with the doctor's and work out that discounted amount. If you went in with no insurance, you would be paying the $1800.

When I didn't have dental insurance, I would always ask for a discount on cleanings/fillings. They would normally agree to a small discount (10-20%) but they were still making more off of me than someone else with insurance.

This is true. So many places have gone out of business because they couldn't handle the Groupon business. It does suck for them, but they are more to blame than Groupon.

They are told up front that they get a portion (which I believe is 50%) of what the Groupon costs. They are also allowed to put a cap on how many are sold (this could prevent overselling and not being able to handle the business), but a lot of companies are greedy and want to allow for unlimited to be sold.

Then once people start using them, they realize how much money they are actually losing.

I can't hold it, I'm not very good at that. Having to pee in a cup is way too stressful. I guess I could pee now and chug a bunch of water. BUT WHAT IF IT"S NOT ENOUGH??
• I would think Groupon is still worth it in the long run, though. Maybe H and I are weird, but we use Groupon to try new places that we wouldn't normally want to risk the money on. A few of our favorite (and therefore frequent) restaurants are ones we tried thanks to Groupon.

And, woah, that sucks about the regular rates. Sometimes I forget just how awesome my insurance is. (It makes up for the crap pay we get.) I have 0 deductible. None, whatsoever. Unless I somehow pay $2500 out of pocket (on $15 copays?), then everything is covered completely. Oh, I think it's 20% copay if I go out of network, but that's pretty much impossible to do.
