If this golden retriever has MAULED you, it should be euthanized because human aggression is never okay. Chasing cats? Chasing horses? Chewing on things. Pooping on the walk. It's a DOG. Those are all NORMAL DOG THINGS. And you said in the other thread that you offered to have a trainer work a SHOCK COLLAR to train him not to chase horses; I would turn you down too. Do you know how easy it is to damage a dog with e-collar training? Hunting dogs that work on e-collars need a VERY specific temperament and it requires a LOT of time and work to condition a dog to WEARING the collar, let alone trained to obey commands or understand concepts wearing one.

  • Steffi - Anyone who sells a horse or who makes a bit of money teaching up downers can be a "pro", it doesn't really make them that.  It's just what the USEF (or whatever governing body) has to keep the amateur rules apart.  USEF is not legally binding and I believe the actual government would not consider it your profession and that is seperate that people who make their living off their livestock.

Knocking you down and jumping on you isn't the same as mauling.  Mauling involves teeth, broken skin, and a mandatory call to the authorities.

The dog sounds unruly and its owners really should police it, get it some training, etc.  But bear mace isn't going to fix it.  If the dog isn't being trained properly, it's not going to realize it did something wrong.  It's only going to know that it's in pain.

OMG. You need to learn what "mauling" is. When you have puncture wounds, are missing flesh, or dead - THAT'S a mauling.

What you described is an exuberant dog with not enough training on how to politely greet people... knocking you down is just a result of size. My friend's great dane knocks me down to say hello because he's overly friendly and doesn't realize his size (and that I'm short). Knocking down =/= mauling.
