• Wait, so not worry about the VA, as in, they'll still be working? I would assume he's fine, since my mother hasn't called me in hysterics.

Aragx: that didn't work out so well for the Republicans last time. I wonder why they think it would be better for them this time around? It wasn't THAT long ago that it happened, and they were blamed for it.

I had my reception in a city building that wasn't authorized to turn on the a/c for another 2 weeks - and it was 86 degrees that day.

I think I might suck more.
  • Rosie are you getting married that Saturday? That's my H's birthday.

We had a nice long chat, commiserating with each other on raising teenaged and pre-teen girls.

Basically, as I understand it, the VA has already been funded for the 2011 fiscal year. And the part of the VA that were not funded for the year, the VA has funds to keep them on for six weeks. If your dad doesn't work for research and development he should be fine.

I think the independents (who are usually the people who swing an election) are going to blame the Republicans if there's a shut down. Mainly because the senario goes:

    1. Voted into majority.
    2. Digs in heels and shuts down government.
    3. Veterans, active duty military and old people don't get their stuff, and Nugget misses her trip to Mexico.

The independents really care about my trip to Mexico. So TAKE NOTE, BONER.

  • Cengle, from what I've seen i do think it willl ultimately be the Repubs who take the lion's share of the blame, but they're trying to turn the conversation around as we speak.

That's why the house pushed through another CR that they knew Obama wouldn't sign so that they can make the argument that he's the one holding things back. This morning Boehner was playing down the abortion conflict (as that plays TERRIBLY with independents, especially women, who care little for petty wedge issues) and was saying that Dems and Obama need to do the "responsible thing" which i guess means bowing down to every Republican demand, even when they change what they want at the 11th hour.

It's really not about convincing dems (who thinks it's all the repubs' fault) or repubs (who think it's all the dems' fault) but rather the independents -- they WILL decide the 2012 election since it's clearly going to be far closer than the '08.
FI is DHS and they don't have a budget this year, so a bunch of stuff has been frozen for a while. From what I've gleaned from FI's coworkers, DHS hasn't had a formal budget since the end of the fiscal year last year, or something. DHS gets random blasts of money whenever something bad happens (like some idiot setting his skivvies on fire in Detroit, CBP agent killed, ICE agent killed, etc.) but they don't have a set in stone budget so they are in limbo more than most. My dad works for the VA and they seem to have their crap in gear more than DHS.
    Posted by katelynbrian
It isn't just DHS, the whole government has been going without a budget since the end of FY10.
  • I don't think they're going to get anywhere until they stop blaming everyone else and start using their energy to come to a budget agreement. I don't know much about the breakdown of the budget, but I assume that part of that budget is dedicated to personal transportation for all of the politicians. What's wrong with driving your own car and buying your own plane tickets? Obviously there are much bigger problems than this, but I feel like this would cut down costs quite a bit as well.

There's a left-wing radio show done by Stephanie Miller that my FI and I used to listen to every morning when we lived in Chicago and they always calle dhim boner too. Now in KC there's no progressive talk radio -- just LOTS of Rush Limbaugh -- so we don't get to hear it anymore.

  • Birdie, I can't get into my beliefs now cause I'm working and all (I REALLY AM!!), btu we can discuss it some time. Personally, I don't think it's May 21 and I don't believe that it's going to happen rightthissecond. But I think with the economy falling, increasing natural disasters, wars in the Middle East, there's just a lot of signs.

But I will be really pissed if 2012 is real. I do think I'm goign to hang with the big J, but I want babies first. #selfishpartyof1

Haha thanks! Yeah I know of a few couples that decide to not move after a while. One of the guys that H worked with before moving here got stationed in Virginia, and his wife decided to just stay in NY with their 3 kids because their family is there and he is retiring after this and they want to stay in NY. It is crazy to me though. I don't think i would want to live on opposite coasts unless we had no choice. But I'm sure the moves also get much more difficult with teenage children.
