Writing that author down now.  Thanks.

ETA - I just went to add it to my Goodreads list and noticed that I read the 2nd in the series in September.  Hope it doesn't matter if I read them out of order.  :)

Yup. I haven't seen the mini-series, but I'm going to start watching it as soon as I get done with the book. H really liked the mini series, and he'd never read the book, so I'd recommend either one.

  • 1: What are you reading?
    Mockingjay

    2: Whats it about?
It's the final book in the Hunger Games Series.  I know all of you already know what it's about but...it's about a post-apocalyptic world where each year a boy and a girl from 12 different districts are thrown into an arena and fight til the death until one is left standing.

    3: Would you recommend it?
Absolutely!  The 1st book is the best one though.

Also, what do you guys think about doing a thread like this weekly?  Or am i the only book nerd?  I'd love to do this weekly!  I always love a good book rec.  Though I will probably get embarrassed when I say I'm reading the same book for like 4 weeks in a row.

Did you see The Other Boleyn Girl?  That is one of her books.

I have a weird fascination with British Royalty.  Especially Henry VIII

[QUOTE]I'm reading the Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley. It's about an 11 year old girl in 1950s England who solves murders. Sounds weird, but it's good. LC, I think I've told you this, but POTE is my all time favorite.

Once I finally got into it, I was in love. I've hardly put it down today. I still have like 100 pages left, and I'll be sad when I'm done. Also? Some parts of it are, like, really erotic. Which I get a kick out of because I'm still 7. I was reading it last night after H had fallen asleep and I was kind of like "damn, that book makes me wanna bang my H."

Ha, LC. My H read it (he doesn't read much) and every once in a while he would just look up at me and say "this is what they put in books these days? I should read more."

He didn't start reading more though. Oh well.

Also, Fall of Giants is really good too. It's about WWI.
  • Has anyone read A Clockwork Orange?  I read the synopsis and it sounds incredible but I tried to watch the movie the other day and didn't get a chance to finish it.

  • this is probably kind of a stupid question, but how do most of you get books? Purchase them? Borrow them? Kindle? do you ever resell them?

I love buying books on my Kindle, but I'm unlikely to ever re-read them, so I feel like I spend too much on them sometimes.

That's a Stanley Kubrick film, right?  Every time I hear the title I immediately think it's porn, but I'm not sure why.

If I remember right, it's really hard to follow. What did you think of what you saw?
  • I tried to read A Clockwork Orange once. It's all written in this made up dialogue though, and I thought it was pretty much impossible to get through.

H has been trying to get me a Kindle forever, but I refuse.  I like books.  I love reading them, the way they smell, etc.

He wants to get me a Kindle so he doesnt have to look at all the books I own.  They are everywhere.

He did promise to build me a library around the fireplace in the basement when we finish it.

  • jennamarie, i'm trying to be better about going to the library instead of buying books or ebooks right now.  Libraries are now starting to "rent" ebooks too which is cool (though mine doesn't, because it's tiny and sucks).  Some coworkers and I also have a "book swap" shelf in my office so when you finish a paper back, put it on the shelf, grab a different one.

I buy them on Amazon if they are cheap enough (and if it's a series, I only buy the first to decide if I like it).  So far, most of the books I've bought, I've either already re-read them, or am planning to.  I want to get a Kindle eventually though so I can take all of my books with me whereever I go, but that obviously will put a damper on lending them out/selling them later.

What saw was strange and twisted and all I kept thinking was that it would make for a creepy, scary and awesome book.  I wasn't much into the movie but the idea around it is fantastic.  And books are always better than the movie so I figured I'd give it a try if anyone else thought it was worth it.  It has great reviews on amazon!

  • i am not currently reading anything for leisure because i have to read so much BS for school... after this semester i will try to get in as many goodies as i can, as i too am a book nerd (i would totally enjoy a monthyly/weekly book thread). as for the reads i've scanned that you ladies are on right now (and i[m v jeal btw).... Hunger games are awesome - i read the series in like a week over the summer & can't wait for the movies. have been wanting to read sookie stackhouse novels because true blood is in my top 5 best shows ever!!!
  • I buy books.  I like to support the authors, I like to hold a book when I'm reading, I re-read a lot. I have a "books" line item in my budget. It's kind of outrageous.

I buy 90% of my books online either on Amazon or Half.com.

I don't resell them because I love having books on my shelf but I'm a big time share-er if anyone ever needs to borrow anything.  I do have a kindle app on my ipad with a couple of books that were either free or under $2 but I'm one of those people that can't let go of the feeling of an actual book in my hands.

this is probably my problem. I don't budget for it, and if I purchase it on my Kindle, it's just instantaneous, and so easy. Before I know it, I've purchased 3 $12.99 books in 3 weeks, and it adds up. I wish I would just drag my booty to the library too. Oh well.

Definitely just bought The Book Theif and the Sisterhood book based on above recommendations. :)

Have you read the Six Wives of Henry VIII by Alison Weir?  It's non-fiction and is probably one of my favorite books.

Currently I'm reading A Dance with Dragons by George Martin

It's the 5th book in the series a Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones is the first book).  It's a political thriller that takes place in a fictional word that resembles medieval Europe except with dragons, a planet with a strange orbit (so winters and summers are longer), and frozen zombie-like creatures.

I would most definitely recommend it.  It does require a very large time commitment though.

Also, I'm sorta new - so hello ladies!  I lurk a lot and rarely post, but I'd participate in weekly book discussion.  I love books!
  • You will LOVE The Book Thief.  I highly suggest you get tissues ready for both books.  :)

  • I waiting for the Game of Thrones craze to die down a bit so that my fav used bookstore will have the series at a good price.

  • I'm not reading anything. I've been trying for a while to get through Wicked Lovely, but I can't get into it. I'm about halfway done, so I'll probably stick it out. But I've been lazy, and my Nook is feeling neglected.

  • I loved Ender's Game. I should reread that; it's been about 10 years ;)

I'm not reading anything right now, which makes me kind of sad.  I've been so swamped with work and house stuff that I don't have time.  That, and I've been spending spare time knitting (I still have to finish my sister's scarf!)

I'm definitely up for this though; I plan on reading a lot more after the holidays.  I miss books.

    Oh- CCF, ygemail soon :)
  • I ditto The Handmaid's Tale and The Book Thief as two amazing books.  Then again, I love dystopian and Holocaust novels.

I just finished Into the Woods.  It's about a detecive who lived through a mysterious tragic event in the woods as a child and can't remember any of it.  Then he has to investigate a murder of a young girl in the same woods.   I like it because it defies many conventions, but that very same thing made me feel a little let down because I was expecting certain things.

Blue- FI has Game of Thrones series on his Kindle, and I'm about half-way through the first one.  It has a ton of characters to keep straight, so I wish I had a paperback of it because it's much easier to flip back to remember who someone is.  One downside of a Kindle.  So far, I like it though.

  • I am reading Saving CeeCee Honeycutt.  It is about a young girl in the 1960's.  Her mother is mentally ill and her father is never around.   She moves to live with her aunt in the South after her mother's death.  The book centers on relationships, mainly female ones, and has a subplot of race relations in the 60's.

I am only about half way through the book but I would recommend it.
