IMO, that dad gave up his rights when he left his pregnant fiance. I'd bet money that kid won't be raised by her dad but rather her grandparents or go into foster care.

[QUOTE]I'm cool with spanking kids, too. My other unpop op about kids is that parents are damaging their kids so much by tip toeing around them and being scared to ever hurt their little feelings. Agreed. I was reading an article the other day about a guy who is HIV positive and literally made it his goal to infect and kill as many people as possible via sex. He literally had sex with like 3000 people. His lawyer flat out said they are looking into the "possibility" of an insanity plea. WTF.

  • Mara- that story riles me up because of the Native aspect. My nephew was involved in a nasty custody battle and basically, long story short, we were threatened with Native family laws, we were told no matter what we paid or fought in the past, if they wanted to bring up the fact that he is Native American, they could have full custody. They never did (because our fam eventually agreed and conceded), but we always have that hanging over our head for future rounds (awesome).

  • Ok, going alllll the way back to the Christmas Providers thing with the wish lists...

This is going to be UO for sure, but I don't have ANY problem with children requesting lavish things... like ipads, Abercrombie, MP3 players, XBox... anything. After all, it's their WISH list - not their "must haves". You ask any 8 year old what they want (regardless of their parents' financial background), and they're going to give you a list like that! I don't understand the notion of "well, if you're less fortunate, you shouldn't be asking for things like that." I absolutely think they should ask for cool stuff like that. I understand that 99.9% of people can't buy those types of things off wish lists - I know that I can't - but I don't see any problem with a child requesting it.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: I judge / unpop ops : That's not an UO to me. FFS, little league games don't even have winners or losers anymore (at least, here). Kids need to learn to win AND lose graciously. And understand that you don't always get to win. Effort =/= winning. Also, the best person for the position should be playing that position. Stop rotating so every child gets a turn at every position. Not every kid can play first base or throw touchdowns.

Along with that, what incentive is there for them to try hard and excel? If they're going to get a trophy whether they give it their all or they spend the whole season warming the bench, then why would they want to be the former rather than the latter? It's teaching them that it's ok to be lazy, because they'll look just as good as the all-stars.

As for the bolded part, I believe that's what practice should be for. Not games.

  • A good place to look to donate is your local elementry schools. Here the families go to the principle with things they need, like a coat or shoes. You contact the school and they give you a specific family to "adopt". Your gifts go right to that family.

This year at the school my mom used to work at, everybody got their wishes.

    Just once?

I was a terror when I was a child - I was spanked probably every few months! My DD (who is 5), has never received a "spanking"... a swat once or twice, but never an actual spanking.

I have trouble with it... I swatted her once when she swung at me. But then I felt like I was punishing her doing the same thing she just got in trouble for... meaning, she TRIED to hit me, so I hit her. I hated that.

Taking things away - that works THE BEST.

We got the good ol' wooden spoon. She broke one on my middle sister's butt for calling my oldest sister a bitch when they were in elementary school. The same spoon she used to stir the Hamburger Helper with, she'd crack across our butts/backs of our legs for being the little terrors that we were. There were five of us, so I have no idea how she kept her sanity.

What's funny is the wooden spoon incidents didn't stick with me the way it did when my mom smacked me on the mouth for sassing her in the car when I was 13. That shut me right up. I was speechless, I just sat there thinking "My mom just smacked me!".
