Re: Is there nothing else...

  • Vogt - I agree with you 100%. It's like the saying goes: "Guns don't kill people - People kill people." Very very true, IMO.

  • I sound like such a republican with all my gun spouting. I want to puke. Sorry republicans :)

  • No offense taken ;)And I agree with you Vogt as well. About the banned siggy pic with the gun, isn't that akin to banning anyone with an alcohol beverage in their siggy due to the suspicions of the drunk driver?

  • The original house he lived in as long as he could remember (where he lived in the hallway), the new house they built in 2000-2001 when FI was 12-13 and the lakehouse was starting to be built 2 years ago. =/ I wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy for thinking that wasn't right. It makes me sad.
  • Sarah - Almost. 8 people died - herself, her daughter, 3 nieces, and 3 men in an SUV. Reports also say there was marijuana in her system - or at least they did the last time I checked.

  • Here's one too that will make people hate me - I'm completely against releasing psychological health so that it can be considered when giving gun permits. I think it weakens HIPAA to release any kind of medical information, mental health related or not, without the patients' consent. And I think if the government starts making the steps toward limiting our rights based on medical conditions, it will go downhill and pretty soon the government will put limitations on all of our rights. I'm sure something like this is coming next: clearly the PA shooter was nuts, and they shouldn't have sold him a gun. Why didn't they check out his mental history? Didn't we learn anything from the VT shooter. Blah blah blah.

  • So that gym killer...  yes, my step-father went to school with him, jr. high and high school, and said he was totally weird. Also, my mom and little sister joined that gym not one week ago, but decided to go to a different location to check out some different equipment or whatever. True, terrifying story. WTF is up with people??
  • rafe is a stupid name. danieliza, why can't you say more? is there super secret mod controversy going on that we, the people, don't have a right to know about? weak.
  • Re: the knottie with the gun in her siggy, yeah I think the mod overreacted on that. I know more than I can say, but I wouldn't have banned her. She was being a jerk but there's no rule against that.Yeah, I read the OP. Although the banned didn't state her case well, she she not have been banned.

  • Taconic incident--yeah I don't know about that. I think they should do a 2nd autopsy. The family attorney was on the Today show and pi$$ed me off b/c he kept saying to Meredith "Is it LOGICAL that a woman would drink vodka and smoke pot and drive kids in a car?"  NO!!! It's NOT logical, but that doesn't mean it DIDN'T happen!!  And I questioned if she made 4 calls and was having trouble seeing and speaking, WHY would she continue to drive instead of pulling over, letting family know where they are and calling for help?  The attorney also said blurred vision and slurred speech isn't something attributed to just being drunk--WHAT?!?!  If I had those symptoms, I'd pull over somewhere safe and call for help. If I was drink/stoned and didn't want to get caught or was in denial, I wouldn't. The shooting here was just frightening. I read the blog the first day and was just beside myself. I told someone at work "this is going to go back to his childhood".  And sure enough...And sad that friends of mine asked if it reminded me of someone we used to work with (the hatred of women etc). There were a few people I know who could fall into that kind of category, and it scared the pants off me. So I stopped reading about it. Between that and the shooting of 3 police officers by a nutjob a few months ago, it is just heartbreaking.

  • That's true, guns don't kill people, people kill people. But people are stupid and as long as there are guns, people will kill each other using them. I personally vote that all handguns should be made illegal (except for law enforcement) and not available for sale. You can still have your hunting rifles, which don't pack as much as take longer to load.
  • I agree that guns don't kill people, but doesn't everyone agree that guns make it much easier for people to kill people?  FI and I have had multiple fights about guns.  I essentially told him that if he ever brought one into our home I would leave him.  Now he wants to get a beanbag gun.  Do. Not. Understand.
  • I personally vote that all handguns should be made illegal (except for law enforcement) and not available for sale. You can still have your hunting rifles, which don't pack as much as take longer to load.Yay, I'm glad I'm not alone :)
  • Of course guns make it easier to kill people but so do knifes and forks and sharpend sticks and baseball bats and cars. My father had a gun that he kept for safety reasons and while I rarely ever saw it I'm quite glad he had it and I will probably end up getting one for the same reason.
  • NDZ: That is one of the most bizarre things I've ever heard!  Poor guy!  It really is like Harry Potter...I'm going to go with Vogt and the other PP on the gun thing.  2nd Amendment and all...
  • Jill - there's a board for mods and we aren't supposed to discuss what goes on there.  I didn't mean to come off all secretive or anything but I guess it did sound that way.Vogt - regarding the mental health thing, the thing is that many people who do have serious mental health issues have no history or hospitalizations or treatment so even having a rule/law like that in place won't stop bad things from happening.  Besides, if someone wants a gun badly enough, they'll find a way to get one.  So I understand your points there, although I'm not against having rules about selling guns to people with a documented mental health history.  I'm just saying it wont' stop everything. As far as the Taconic driver, yeah there are just so many weird parts to that story.  Did she start drinking when she left the campsite?  She had been driving for hours so it is possible that she was sober and fine at the camp but wasted by the time she crashed.  And why didnt' she call her husband who was traveling with them  in a separate car instead of her brother?

  • The point is, you can have all those guns and be responsible. No, they're not necessary, but if you're going to be safe and responsible with them, why not?My father has collected guns his whole life. We were taught from a very early age to respect how dangerous they are. We were taught how to handle them safely, fire them safely, clean them safely. I have a very healthy respect for guns and that they can kill, but I'm not afraid to have them in my house (FI had the same upbringing that I did - not that we have any in our house.)There are all sorts of things that can cause death that are legal: alcohol, cigarettes, cars, knives, drain cleaner, etc. These are things we keep in our houses (or garages) and don't give a second thought to. It's the people operating/using these things that make them dangerous.

  • My father had a gun that he kept for safety reasons and while I rarely ever saw it I'm quite glad he had it and I will probably end up getting one for the same reason. At least it sounds like your father was responsible, but I could still never justify allowing a gun in my home.  I've heard too many stories of accidental shootings to risk it, especially when I have kids.
  • Dani - I totally agree. Didn't get to that either - the PA shooter was nuts, clearly, but I haven't heard anything about him having a documented mental condition. So it wouldn't have helped stop him anyway. And people go through illegal channels all the time to get weapons. And Ricks - you could never make me puke. Swoon, definitely :) I was more talking about my conservative swing on this issue since I'm typically more liberal - it's a little jarring!

  • But the accidental shootings happen to morons, most often.  Seriously.  Keep your guns locked up, unloaded, safety on, ammunition stored separately.

  • Kati, that makes plenty of sense, I really do think it's all about how you raise your child. I've never had any desire to play with or look at my dad's gun. I've played plenty of first person shooter games and had my fair share of angry music phases but my parent's raised me right and I didn't go grabbing for the gun.
  • Sarah - I disagree. My DH can load his rifle faster than he can load his handgun, and rifles can do a lot more damage. I don't think that he (or anyone else for that matter) should have his right to bear arms taken away. I understand that there are people who can get a hold of guns and do bad things, but does that mean that their actions should ruin it for others? No. We have 1 of each and I feel safer because of that. We keep them loaded, but in the closet. We have no children and once we do, we will figure something else out - most likely a locked gun cabinet.

  • Kati - what if you and your FI took training courses, and safety courses so that you could learn to properly store the gun (and shoot, and clean)? As I said, there are all sorts of things that are dangerous in our lives that we just accept. The car is the one I keep going back to because auto accidents kill people all the time, but we don't think of the car as a dangerous weapon. And most people can't live without their cars so they don't give it a second thought. Plus, you're trained to operate a car in a safe manner to avoid those types of things. There are people out there driving who get drunk or don't obey safety laws, but we still get on the road with them unknowingly. Most of us still take the risk and drive our cars.

  • Funny, Kati0105, I would be the one more likely to bring the gun into the house. And I really think that if not before the wedding, that we will get one after and go to the range to learn how to use it. I have always heard it said not to get one if you think you can't use it or don't know how to. I have every intention of knowing how to use it. Not that I'd be itching to kill someone, but you better believe if I am home alone and someone gets in, I will start with a kneecap and go from there to protect myself. And I honestly have thought on several occasions, what I would do if someone broke in now. First plan of attack is one of the fire extinguishers to the head.  The criminal;s, of course, not mine.

  • I know. I am conservative on a lot of things (economy, health care, GUNS LOL!)but I am liberal when it comes to gay rights, religion, some forms of abortion). We need a president who agrees with everything I approve of ;P j/k a little

  • But the accidental shootings happen to morons, most often. Seriously. Keep your guns locked up, unloaded, safety on, ammunition stored separately. I agree that they are probably way more common among morons but accidents still can happen.  I had a close friend whose brother drowned in their pool because their dog somehow got the gate open and the little boy wandered in.  I do trust that FI would also be a responsible gun owner, but I don't foresee ever allowing us to live in a place where we would NEED a gun for safety, so even a minuscule risk of an accident would outweigh any safety concerns for me.
  • I don't think generalization comparisons can be made between rifles and handguns.  Some handguns are hard to load, some are easier.  Same with rifles.  And yeah, in general a .22 rifle will do less damage than a .40 handgun (depending on what you're shooting and from how far away and all that jazz).  Well, duh.  But that has to do with the caliber.

  • Where you would need a gun for safety? Intruders can happen ANYWHERE.
  • Ang - You sound like my kinda girl! I'm the same way.
