fondant vs. buttercream

I know fondant is laid over buttercream.  Which did people pick for the cake?  Preferences?

Re: fondant vs. buttercream

  • I'm going with buttercream because I think it tastes better and it is a lot cheaper!
  • We're doing buttercream. Much cheaper.
  • Fondant is disgusting :)It does make the cake look more smooth though, in it's frosting, so if that's important to you, then I would go with fondant. But I want my cake to look really yummy, so I'm going with buttercream even if it is less perfect looking.Fondant is definitely more expensive too.

  • We used buttercream.  It was cheaper and tasted great!
  • Buttercream because me and my FI don't care for the taste of fondant.

  • Buttercream.  Cheaper and yummier.

  • Fondant can be good, it can also be very, very bad. We had both, but only because our baker makes good fondant.   Also our wedding was outside and without it the buttercream would have completely melted off.  The fondant kept it looking better a little longer (but it still did melted a little).

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I have never tasted fondant...is it really that disgusting?
  • Our baker's fondant is homemade.  It tasted fine, but I wouldn't feel inclined to eat a whole slab of it.

  • Our baker's fondant was actually pretty tasty - she had both vanilla and chocolate flavors. We went with butter cream and a fondant band to accent the base of each layer. It just worked out with the design we had in mind.IMO full fondant cakes are gorgeous but we couldn't justify the expense when most guests don't find it very palatable.

  • I think I'm the only one who likes fondant - it tasted good on our cake!
  • Fondant tastes like hot garbage.

  • I worked at a bakery in college--and we specialized in wedding cakes. Fondant has a very distinct taste to it, and it's not very pleasant. It can, however, make a cake look flawless--but is pricey. But butter-cream can do the same (make a cake look flawless) if it's done right...plus it's much tastier.

  • The cake we want will be a mixture of both. It will be a buttercream base with fondant accents.

  • I'd do fondant, but I'm making my own and my first attempt was a disaster.  So I've decided to do cupcakes with buttercream.Or... mini-cakes with fondant.Because the preprepared fondant in the Wilton box sucks.  If you make your own, it's pretty much just sugar instead of the sugar/fat combo that is buttercream.

  • I personally think fondant is awful. I know it can be eaten by some people, but I much prefer the buttercream if I'm going to eat frosting. If you really like the look of it, it's not like your guests are going to vomit if they try to eat it. It just may not be their favorite.

  • We are doing cupcakes, but even if we were doing a full cake I'd go with buttercream.  Fondant tastes grody to me.

  • I would like to amend my answer to not only Buttercream, but Publix buttercream, as in the same kind that they use on their cupcakes. mmmmm.

  • Andplusalso... yeah, with fondant you STILL get buttercream so it's not like people who like buttercream are pissed because they didn't get to have buttercream...

  • We had buttercream and it was delicious!  I've never actually tried fondant, but it can make a cake look very pretty.  I just didn't want to spend the extra money.
  • I made homemade buttercream icing for my fiance's birthday, and man, I am grossed out by the amount of Crisco I put in it.

  • We're also doing cupcakes. Fondant sure does make cakes look pretty, but it tastes gross. If we did a cake, it'd be buttercream.
  • We were going to do a fondant/buttercream combo, but the more I think about it, the more I'm considering losing the fondant completely.

  • I'm doing dark chocolate fudge icing, which is smooth like fondant without the butt taste. I love buttercream too. My mom makes the BEST buttercream icing. Holy bad calories, batman!
  • Vally-  I am getting married in FL, and the resort I am using actually gets the wedding cakes from publix.  I'm not familiar with them, but do they do all their cakes in buttercream or do you have to ask for it?
  • BeachBride- To the best of my knowledge they offer any styles/flavor, etc. I have seen samples with fondant, buttercream and chocolate gnocchi. But I am definitely partial to the buttercream, it is the best.

  • Chocolate gnochhi or chocolate ganache?
