Re: Let's DOOO somethin'...

  • I can't speak for all Americans, but I learned about Canada.

Everything the light touches is my kingdom.
  • We learned geography and it's major imports and exports in 8th grade. Other than that, no.Our schools have a hard enough time educating our kids on our own friggin' country. Sad, but true.

  • i just find it amazing that someone wouldn't know that Newfoundland is a province in our country.i mean, not knowing what a beavertail (and thinking it's actual beaver) is super cute.. but being that geographically challenged worries me. lol
  • Lanner - We Americans are taught little about the rest of the world in primary school, period. Probably the same in most high schools as well, but I went to a rigorous high school that offered the IB, so I was lucky in that respect.
  • There was never a discussion on Canada in school in any grade whatsoever.
  • Ditto what Fishy said.
  • That was suprising to me, too, Lanner. We were taught the Canadian basics, but that's about it.

  • I learned about Canada in school. Elementary and highschool
  • wow cacoffer.that makes me sad :(
  • Um, I think I know about Canada because I grew up a few miles from the border and we got CBC and stuff at my house with our basic cable.Really, it's not hard to learn the provinces. There's a lot less of them than there are states. ;-) I can't tell you much about Canadian political history, though. Just the War of 1812, the Dionne quintuplets, and Tim Horton.I've actually only BEEN to Ontario, though. I drove through it once on my way to Michigan, because yes, it IS that friggin huge.

  • I knew what Newfies were and where they come from.  (I even watched some sitcom about a Newfie family.) But I did not know about poutine or beavertails until I dated a Canuck.  And ::gasp:: I didn't care for Tim Hortons the first time we went.Oh, and Swiss Chalet sauce is gross.

  • Lanner, that makes me sad too.  As far as basics, I'm talking Canada borders the US and is a county on the continent of North America and the flag has a Maple leaf on it - that was the extent of it.I feel like I should know much more about Canada, but I just don't.
  • I will admit that while I know some stuff about the US, I learned it all on tv. I dont recall learning much about it in school.
  • lol.. i think i slept thru most of grade 10 social studies so i don't know much about our history either.. (found it ridiculously boring).i did take history though in grade 11 and 12 and learned a lot about american history, all the wars, the great depression etc.for the record, i'm not a timmy ho's fan either and chalet sauce IS gross.also i've never had poutine. but i'm from vancouver, we live on sushi here. lol
  • Speaking of TV - are there Canadian sitcoms or TV shows that have crossed over to the US?  Is there a Canadian film industry?  I know there must be. I know a lot of Canadian actors/actresses cross the border into the US, what about singers (other than Avril Lavigne ha!).
  • Best ketchup chips: chips + pile of Heinz on the plate. Dip repeatedly. I taught the basics of the continent - sadly, with the high stakes testing, it is sometimes difficult to get more in the curriculum. I would have loved to spend more time on geography and social studies. Social Studies was my favorite in school, and I would have loved to pass that along. In my short teaching career, it was very hard to master the basics that were tested, much less become adept at incorporating everything so I could provide a thorough education and the testing skills they needed. I felt like a failure.

Do not mess in the affairs of dinosaurs because you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • Thank you, Lanner!  My BF's dad DRANK the leftover sauce.  He got extra and took mine.Yuck.

  • To be honest a lot of canadian television sucks. Any canadians remember train48? enough said. There are some good ones though but im not sure of their popularity in the US other than degrassi.
  • Most of the funny folks on SNL are Canadians and then you have SCTV (I am a member of the Second City so I have to shout that out), The Kids in the Hall (I think).  I wish I could remember that goofy sitcom we used to watch....

  • Oh, wait, how could I forget You Can't Do That On Television!?  You guys are probably way too young for any of this....

  • I think the show Little Mosque on the Prairie has crossed over the border some.  I know it's shown in some European countries.  Other than Degrassi that's all I can think of right now.  One of the main female leads in the show was my sister's bf growing up and our parents were close.   It's pretty cool to see her doing well now. There's not too many Canadian movies that make it into the mainstream theatres.  However, some of the American companies do a lot of their filming up here.As far as music goes, there's probably a lot more Canadian music than you realize.  Oftentimes the artists may only make it big in Canada, Tragically Hip or Amanda Marshall come to mind.   Barenaked Ladies are Canadian too!
  • Yes, I do know about Alanis. I loved You Can't do that on Television and Kids in th Hall.  See, I did not realize they were Canadians shows even though the cast was mostly Canadian.  I suck at Canada trivia.
  • It was the new found land, what else were they going to call it, Arkansas?!::puts up fists::

  • That's okay, Nebb, I'll make fun of Arkansas quite a bit, but still have a strange affinity for it.  It's actually not as bad as I thought.

  • I watched it on Nickelodeon and I am 37!  I was watching it 81-84.  So I was 9-12 and you were...not born.  It was on the air until the mid 90's but it wasn't the same after the main characters like Moose left in the mid 80's.

  • I have the entire series of You Can't Do That on Television on DVD. I loved that show

  • I remember YCDTOT. And I still watch Degrassi. I'm lame.I love the Tragically Hip. It's so weird that they are one of the most popular bands in Canada and no one in the US knows who they are. Yeah, we got Canadian radio stations, too, obviously. Is it true that Canadian radio has to play like 20% Canadian artists? Hence the large amount of Bryan Adams and Avril Lavigne?
