Re: Sticky sitch

• People are going to get you a present whether you have a registry or not. And they're going to get you presents even if someone tells them that you don't want them. So you might as well register and get what you want. The only way I would not get you a present is: - You ask me not to ON THE INVITATION. Yes, I know this considered a faux pas by some, but honestly, that't the only way I'm going to believe you - OR the ONLY registry you set up is a charity registry and you make it claer that you don't need anything, but this charity does -- then I'd donate to that charity in your name instead of giving you a gift directly. Otherwise...I'm getting you a gift.
• As I always say, I will believe it when I see it!Didn't California legalize same sex marriage for about a month?
• http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/13/nyregion/13marriage.htmlIs this enough "seeing it" for you?

• Yeah, in CA same sex marriages were legalized by the Supreme Court but then overturned shortly thereafter by the passage of Proposition 8.

• See that article says "same sex marriage" but it's still just civil unions...
• First, Gavin Newsom (mayor of San Francisco) made gay marriage legal in San Francisco, but that was ended quickly. I don't remember the legalities of it, but he didn't have the power to do that. Then CA voted for gay marriage and it passed. We had it for a few months and then Prop 8 was born. Prop 8 was voted on, passed (I was shocked!), and made gay marriage illegal again. There's now a huge Repeal Prop 8 campaign going on. *fingers crossed*
• What's interesting to me is that some of my gay friends also are fine with the civil union aspect.  They see the marriage as the religious ceremony and just believe that ALL civil ceremonies should be called civil unions.
• It's probably difficult to understand, but the term "civil union" just pisses me off.Why not just give us separate drinking fountains and seats in the back of the friggin bus while you're at it?
• I think you need to talk to a lawyer or something to understand the legality of your situation. It looks like CT passed civil unions in 2005. In 2008, they passed a new law that removes all gender from marriage laws and allows for same-sex marriage. That means that if you go to city hall you get a marriage license, not a civil union license. You can get legally married in your state.I'm trying to find the law for you so that you can read it explicitly.

• IMO, if you're going to call gay marriages civil unions, then every marriage that was performed by an officiant that is not affiliated with a church should also be considered a civil union. I mean, if you're gonna link marriage to the church than link it all the way or none at all. Tim and I didn't get married in a church, our officiant is not linked to a church, the ceremony was not religious, etc.
• FAQ on same-sex marriage from CT website that clearly states that according to CT, all marriage is the same now:http://www.ct.gov/dph/cwp/view.asp?A=3294&Q=427720

• http://www.glad.org/uploads/docs/publications/ct-civil-union.pdfIt's still civil unions, but there will be (hopefully) marriage rights as of 2010. But like I said, I will believe it when I see it.
• Massachusetts was the first to have same sex marriage and we still do. Although I think this state is crazy; they did get marriage right!
• LOL most straight folks don't stay up do date on the crazy same sex marriage laws... It feels like they are constantly changing and it's insane.
• Hi Dys, congrats on your engagement!  Have you thought about getting hitched in Vermont?  Not that far from CT and has some gorgeous venues.  Of course CT may not call it a marriage, yet.

• The document you just sent me says on page 5 that as of October 2008, same-sex marriage is now legal in CT, so now it is possible to enter into EITHER a civil union OR a marriage as a gay person in CT. The date of October 2010 is the point when all civil unions that were performed before October 2008 will be converted into marriage. Now that same-sex marriage is allowed, however, it is no longer necessary to have a civil union.Page 6 of your document says that what is going on now is that CT is trying to move from having both civil unions and marriage to only having marriage. Which means right now, you can get married.

• Maybe it's out of date, because a couple we know just did the deed and were only allowed a civil union... Like I said, as far as benefits and such goes it's very fair... it's just the word.
• I think that you need to actually research this yourself and talk to your county clerk or a lawyer rather than just going on "Well, my friend said..." Everything that I have looked at (and I have been looking for a while now) says that it is marriage, not civil union, in CT. Are you a student? Lots of colleges have legal clinics. Even your GLAD information says that it is marriage. I don't know what else to tell you.
