I knew someone w/ the last name "Slutsky."  I always thought that was rather unfortunate.

<div>I had never heard it before, as a joke or otherwise, so I was just surprised when everyone called bullshit. I don't think it's at all surprising or shocking, in fact, I agree with PP that it's probably pretty common. It's just bad is all. Which was the point of the post!</div>

[QUOTE]I had a teacher in high school whose first name was Lolly. Her last name was Memory. I always thought that was the weirdest first and last name EVAR. My grandmother's middle name is Gene, the masculine spelling (I think, anyway.) My other grandmother's name is Minnie, and she's hated it since birth. I think it's a really cute name though, very 20's to me.

I love that.  This is lame and you'll all laugh at me but sometimes FI calls me Minnie...derived from his love of Mickey & Minnie.  Somehow it translates as cute when he does it and I love him for it, but at face value it is probably gag-worthy. :p
  • M&M, I love it too! My grandmother's name is Minnie Marie, and since she hates Minnie, she's always gone by Marie. I think Minnie Marie together is cute.

  • Kate, not dumb at all!! We also love minnie and mickey :)
Mike calls me bug all the time, after lovebug and cuddlebug, so yeaaaahhhh.

  • On the le-a thing...I actually read an interesting article about this on baby names wizard (I've been reading her blog lately for obvious reasons). It talks about racial connotations and what not, I think it's well written:

    http://www.babynamewizard.com/archives/2009/10/ledasha-legends-and-race-part-one

And snopes marks the ledasha story as "undetermined":

  • H and his sister both had the same kids in an afterschool program and they were three brothers:  Alone, Grey, and Red.  Their last name is Wolfe.

My sister had two kids that went to her office and their names were Denim and Cotton.

I like my name and appreciate that it's semi-unique-ish, or at least not very popular.  I hate when people get "creative" with name spellings.  Like the extra 'y', or switching letters around.  A CW has a son with the middle name Micheal.  Yeah, it's supposed to be 'ae', but she wanted to be different.  I bet she didn't know how to spell it.

I have relative's with the middle names Margarita and Martha - I LOVE IT! :)

Thankfully we have no weird names in our familes, although FI mentioned using Rusty as a name... I laughed so hard I cried, then I realized he was serious and laughed some more.

  • My dad claims he had a childhood friend named William Willy that they all called Willy Willy or Billy Willy. I always imagine this scene in the 1950s where little Willy Willy wins the soapbox car race despite the damage inflicted by the town bully (Tommy Buttkiss or something, right?).

Not as bad as it is funny.

I nearly died when I saw one named Torro Delite (female). That sounds like the entree at a Spanish restaurant, after a bull fight.
My friend's little sisters are Autumn Leaf, Spring Rain, and Summer ___. He counts himself lucky that he's just plain old Jeremy.
    I guess working at a university, I have just seen a LOT of weird names;
    Aquanita
    D'Les
    Kevyn (female)
    Exemcia
    Valeria
    Sunny

I certainly get a kick out of them.

Nugget: Vivien Rose is beautiful! Your family is nuts if they don't like it. I like old fashioned names and wish there were more of them around instead of these crazy names people are using. If I have a daughter her name will be Evelyn Lorraine (Lorraine is my grandmother's name). Old fashioned, maybe, but something every other person in her class isn't going to be named.

Whoever said Madisyn... it makes me think of Unasyn.

The worst I've personally seen are:
    James James James
    Miami Dolphin
    Tungsten
    Shi-Zaa

<div>It is a great article! I totally understand why people reacted the way they did to my original post, it seems to fit the description perfectly. I feel ridiculous not having known about the urban legend (I'm all "maybe try to google search her!?" haha), maybe my cousin thought I would get the joke and here I am going off telling people like "no no it's pronounced with the dash!" I could see L-ia actually being pronounced Leah more than Ledashia anyway. I'll have to ask my cousin!</div>
  • AC- that was a great article. Its true that I often infer gender and ethnicity from the name, but I haven't actually met most of the students names I mentioned, so I have no idea. They are real, legal names, though, and I still question the judgement of the parents, no matter what their ethnic background is.

  • Pete has a cousin named John Johns. I don't know wtf his parents were thinking.

I love genealogy and do it for my family, here are some of the family names I've come across:

    Obedience
    Pleasant
    Epaphroditus

To the person who wants to name their kid madysyn or whatever, please don't do this. My mom decided to be unique by basically misspelling my name and it's a colossal pain in the ass. Also, do you know how I explain it? I explain that it was my mothers retarded idea. So, while you think it's cute, you're not the one that has to live with it.
