I hate trying to buy a car!

Why do they have to play those games? I hate it .

We were ready to buy a car today, we had them down to the price we wanted, but they tried to rip us off on the two trucks we wanted to trade in. They were only going to give us $500 a piece. Where as another dealership was going to give me $1500 for my truck alone. I am kind of pissed. He was really nice and then basically went down the list showing me how much of a piece of shiit my truck is. (Which is pretty much is, but it runs, the body is just horrible. $500 is just a slap in the face though.)

So. we walked. I am sad, because it is what we have been looking for, we just wanted a smaller amount we had to pay out of pocket. We aren't comfortable taking that much out of savings with the wedding, honeymoon, starting a family, etc.) We both decided it wasn't meant to be, and we will find something eventually, we don't need it now anyway.

We are going to have my brother sell our trucks, and FFIL will let us borrow their extra truck until we find something else to buy. (Chad has an old truck and his current one, so we would still have two vehicles.)

Anyone else hate the whole car buying experience? (Nothing against car salesmen, it is the system they use and the games they play.)

  • Great idea selling it outright, you will get A LOT more for it.

  • I love buying cars. Honestly if the body looks like crap then $500 would be fine. They'd have to fix up the body and everything to make a profit. Dealers vary based on what they'll give you. I don't think it was a slap in the face, it was smart on the dealer. I'd just suck it up and trade it in for that. It's only $1000 less than the other dealer so it's not going to affect your payments drastically. If it's what you want then get it

If I remember correctly, Fawn is paying cash. And I completely disagree, if a different dealer offered 1500, I would re-think it too. A thousand dollars is a lot of money.

  • For me the trade in wouldn't be a deal breaker. Sorry I misunderstood you were paying cash. When I bought my car I wanted to get a loan for around 10k before I started looking. We got approved but I will only buy foreign and wanted to make sure it was one I liked. I found a Volkswagen Jetta I loved that was $12500 plus tax, title, etc. I loved it and would rather spend the extra $2500 to get a car I liked than one I was eh about. So for me $1-2,000 isn't bad

<div>Agreed. No matter who you are I think getting the best deal is always important. </div>
  • When I bought my car, the first dealership I went to very clearly said "oh, a young girl. not even gonna try." They completely ignored me, told me to test drive a car that was signficantly lower grade than I said I was looking for, and only started to notice me when I said I was putting down 20%. Bah. Second dealership was awesome, though, so that was good.

<div>It's the percentage though.  $1000 in relation to 11,500 does not equal $1000 in relation to $2500, KWIM?</div>

We could've paid cash for my car but FI wanted to get the loan in his name to build credit. He paid cash for his car, Army is paying for school, etc. so he has nothing to take a loan out for. We both have really good credit but lack an "installment history." <div>
</div><div>It sometimes bothers me that at places like car dealerships, jewelers, etc the first thing they say to us because we're a young couple is something about financing. Everytime FI says that's not an issue so it stops but I digress lol</div>

    Oh ok lol thanks
  • We were hoping for $3,000 for the both of them total. He offered us $1,000. That was not even close. $2,000 is $2,000 and no matter how much money you have or make, you wouldn't just throw it away.

There are always deals out there, you just have to be willing to wait for them. We were looking at an 06 Impala in perfect condition. Marked at $9,000, got them down to $7,500. With that kind of price, $2,000 does make a difference. Yes, we have way more than that in our savings, (think multiple times) but we don't see the point in paying a lot of money for a fancier car just because we have the money.

Like others have said, we are going to have my brother sell them and then borrow FFILs truck. If we find another good deal, and they are willing to give us a fair deal for our vehicles, we will jump on it.

It does suck. You know the funny thing, in furniture sales, you target the women, because usually the men don't care what color the couch is and want to get out of there! haha

  • That's true.  I love going to places like Best Buy with FI because they try and sell us something ridiculous and he's like yeah no, this isn't 2005 that's not necessary.  Or something to that effect.

My friend (A) went with our other friend (B) to look at cars, because friend B had recently go a car after his completely died.  Friend A decided he too needed a new car, because his car was running smoothly...ehhm was "old."  Friend B is attending law school and is pretty savvy about this stuff, friend A is pretty goofy and impulsive (obviously).  They went and got a ridiculous deal on a car and friend B advised friend A to walk, because it wasn't worth it.

Friend A left the next weekend for a family BBQ and came back with a brand new car.

But the guy gave him a good deal! Nahhht

Not that you asked for advice, but why don't you buy a car that was leased out for a year that has super lowmiles on it. They have great warranties and you won't loose the value you do when you drive it off the lot. :)
