[QUOTE]In Response to Re: FFF : Idk -Just as a hypothetical.... I think that watching somebody really really obese eating at a buffet makes me want to say something/do something about as much as when I see somebody smoking in front of their kids.  I don't...because it's rude...but I think about it. Obviously this wasn't the case here so he should have shut his pie hole.

I get what you're saying, but a fat person isn't going to go on a major diet overhaul immediately, anymore than telling someone "smoking is bad for you" will make them quit cold turkey. It's likely not new information.

  • I can see where you're coming from, Andy, but IMO that's something that's between them and their doctor. It's not a stranger's business to monitor what another adult eats. If they're not listening to their doctor or their families, some stranger saying something to them is not going to help at all. And if that personal is an emotional eater, it would probably only make it worse.

Yeah, I generally stay off FFF, but this annoys me.  I don't if it's because I'm one of those morbidly obese out there or what, but we get it.  We know we are fat and I wouldn't take kindly to someone, a stranger or friend, telling me to take care of the problem I'm "ignoring."

I totally agree - which is why I wouldn't say anything to that person.  But I do think that it's fine for a doctor/loved one to say that - and I don't think that over eating in general is healthy.

  • I have to say when I see morbidly obese people when I'm at a buffet or fast food place, it definitely makes me rethink my food choice, or at least feel extra guillty about it.  I totally understand that not everyone's weight issues are from a poor diet, but more often than not it is.  And when I see obese parents with obese children at buffets and fast food places, I want to punch the parents for teaching their children horrible eating habits.  And like Andy said, I'm talking morbidly obese, and possible Biggest Loser candidates, not just people who are overweight.

  • There are people like one particular family member of mine who has been morbidly obese for most of her life and is now to the point where her health is so poor, she can barely walk, can't drive, and will probably end up in an assisted living facility in the next few years. We've tried talk to her to lose the weight and she just won't. I don't think she cares anymore,

Then there are people like me who KNOW they are overweight and hate themselves for it. I can't look in the mirror without being disgusted with what I"ve let happen to my body. If someone other than my mom or FI said something to me about my weight I'd probably roll up into a ball of hysterics on the floor.
  • Gah, even the term Morbidly Obese is annoying. Do you realize that most foot ball players would be considered that? It's calculate don BMI. It's fairly arbitrary. And it's jsut obnoxious. It's none of your business what I eat.

I live by a buffet and I see these people all the time.  Why?  Because they can afford it.  They probably eat one big meal a day.  Same with fast food.  I can feed my kids off the dollar menu?  Fantastic.  Also, because I am poor there are tons of fast food joins on the bus route or within walking distance of my house.

Should they make better choices? Of course.  CAN THEY?  I'm not so sure about that.  I am sure that if you really start breaking down obesity in America, I am confident you will find that poor communities are affected at a much higher rate.

So maybe slow your roll on the punching parents.
