I like you too Jasmine. They may be the facts but this wasn't a controversy thread or anything like that. The eye roll was more to the statement of "no matter how cute they are.....blah blah blah." I find the killing of animals sad but I also think breeding healthy, fit, dogs to a specific breed standard is important and not something to be scoffed at. Breeders who are passionate about what they do find it insulting considering all of the in-depth work we put into care, genetics research, medical ideas, etc. etc. and we find it condescending.
It sounds like you're better than most then, aprovencher. You hit all the points on my "responsible breeder" checklist.
I still can't support breeding programs in general. The euthanasia statistics speak for themselves. And most people who think adoption isn't for them don't realize how many options they have. After all, not every rescue dog is a flea-infested stray with an unknown history! Papered puppies are turned over to shelters and rescues -- and returned to breeders and breed clubs -- all. the. time.
And Celles finds it irresonsible to breed when there are homeless pets (Sorry to put words in your mouth Celles, but that's what I got). I know you didn't mean it to be controversial, but you put it out there. I've never mentioned it to you, because it never was appropriate with the conversation. But, this post is about the dogs you breed, so it goes the way of all of the posts today. :P

I know all of this. This is why I have a list of breed specific rescues for people who cannot afford one of my puppies to try. Also, most breeders like me do coupons and twofers. If you're looking for two puppies I give a 25% discount if you adopt the second puppy from the breed specific rescue.
I've had awesome shelter dogs and I've had a few that should never have been up for adoption. I've loved them all but because of this I know adoption isn't for everyone.
I do agree that the AKC papers are only worth as much as the knowledge of the breeder. I HATE that the AKC works on an honesty system.
I love the name Pongo. Ever since 101 Dalamations I've wanted to name an animal Pongo just never got the chance. Have you ever had long-haired doxies? They are my favorite. When I worked at the vet there was one named Momo and I wanted to steal him for myself.
One of H's customers has 8 dogs, 2 beagles and 6 labs (1 in every color and then some), and I love going to his house. He is trying to breed blue/silver labs (I can't remember the right name) in between getting new dogs so there is always at least 1 puppy in the bunch.
And before anyone says anything, the guy is crazy rich and has a huge house and yard, so he is able to care for them. And they are always clean. I don't know how he does it.
Also, I got my pure bred, akc registered Australian Shepherd from a rescue. She was spayed and her tail was docked- both expensive procedures, so purebreds are out there.

I've spent too much time doing rescue not to say it when I see it. (I also call the police when I see people selling puppies on the side of the road or in front of grocery stores; it's illegal to sell without a permit here.)
Pound runs ruined me for non-rescue dogs. See, that's when a rescue visits the pound before public hours to evaluate all of the dogs and cats that are scheduled to be euthanized that day. Sometimes we only have room for one or two in our program, and there are HUNDREDS on the e-list.
So, I understand, intellectually, everything that aprovencher is saying and I applaud her for being one of the truly responsible breeders -- but after far too many pound runs, it's hard to admit that "responsible breeder" isn't actually an oxy-moron. My knee-jerk reaction is to condemn, because the biggest thing working against animal rescue in this country is ignorance. I think everyone here understands the issue because it comes up so often, but there are a lot of people who don't realize that every shelter isn't, well, puppies and rainbows.

I have four dogs, two cats, and one highly allergic fiancée who loves me too much to make me give them up. Because of his allergies, though, I'm done fostering and will likely only have one pet at a time when these eventually pass on.

We have a building attached to the house built specifically to dachshund proportions! My dogs are never in crates (unless delivering or somehow needing medical attention). They have large stalls with long outdoor runs. The doggie doors are built for dachshunds (protective for backs). They have heating, AC and a shallow exercise pool. I'm an addict.
I really want to start fostering for the group I got all of my girls from, but I am scared I won't be able to give them up. How do you not get attached?

I cry a lot. I do get attached but I'm very selective when it comes to new homes for my babies. As in there is paperwork, interviews, reference checks, etc. People I pick are awesome and I stay in touch. People send me Xmas cards, easter cards, invite me to their beach houses to visit the pup and 85% of clients come back for at least one more puppy.
I've fostered here and there. Personally I find that harder because I feel like shelter dogs need so much more extra love. I stopped fostering after the 3rd dog because it was just too hard. I adopted the 3 I had.
