It's the only senario in which human and animal life is put on the exact same line.  So I think it's the best way to judge if you really think that they're equal or not.  Everything else has too many variables.

Just the mental picture of this made me laugh.
  • I think most people will have the gut reaction of "I would sacrifice myself for anyone that I love," and that is normal and noble.  In a real life or death situation (which is, apparently, "Pick.  I kill you or the dog.") the instinct to survive would kick in and we'd all miss our dogs very much but be very happy that we lived to see another day.  So yea...I don't think anyone here would really die for their pets.
This kind of reminds me of that horrible Box movie with Cameron Diaz...did anyone else see this?  It was awful, but interesting for discussion.
  • nuggs - another scenario would be a house fire, and FI and I have had that conversation before.  I'm sure he would risk his own life to save his dog, if it involved running back into the house for her.

Murderer/rapist/Hitler gets to live, dog you love with all your heart dies? I'd save my dog. I don't think that evil human life /> good animal life.

But I do agree that in a less extreme situation like random stranger vs. random dog, I would save the person's life.

Cameron Diaz was enough to make it awful.  Then the actual movie happened.

General flame- I hate when a foreign film is remade, and then film snobs get all "Oh, you liked that?  You should have seen the original Japanese one.  Yea, it's from 1942 and the cast is entirely men, and there's subtitles...well, actually, there's not even pictures, just words.  And random farting.  But it's so much better than the Hollywood version."  I get it.  You're artsy.  Shut up.  I liked it.  (This doesn't apply to awful box movie).

The E vs. SB boardward of which we do not speak apparently is not a joking matter for some people. By Any having Switzerland in her sig, she was fanning the flames of hatred/pouring salt in the wounds/I don't even know for something she wasn't even there for (the nerve!)...not just, ya know, making light of the fact that some people on E don't like some people on SB and vice versa, and she loves everyone and posts everywhere.

ETA: The Switzerland sig was a result of I think Fish comparing Any to Switzerland for being neutral and posting on both boards.
