Piercings

I have a second set of piercings in my ear lobes.  I've had them since I was 18, but only ever wear studs in them.  They've started to close up as I wear stuff in them less.  Can you think of any reason it would be bad or sad to let them close up?

If I'll need to hide microchips in them someday for a super secret government mission, I want the option, you know?

Re: Piercings

  • I always wear a pair of diamond studs in my second piercings.  I have a teeny little diamond third piercing in my left ear.  But they always stay in.  I'm always switching up the first holes I guess.

Why do you want to break up with your piercings, NS.  First your wedding band and now this.  You're breaking hearts everywhere.

  • It seems strange that they're closing up after years of being open. I have four holes in my left ear, and I very rarely wear earrings in the last two, but they're still open. To answer your question, though, no I can't see anything bad about letting them close up. If you decide you want holes there again, you can always get them repierced right?

  • I don't know, AATB.  The wedding band and I never had a good relationship, but the piercings and I have just grown apart over time.  It's how some relationships evolve.  Do you think I should keep them, just to avoid breaking hearts?  That'll just lead to messy divorce later (or just leaving them in my ears forever).

  • Well in my experience I have had my ears pierced  since I was a teenager. But I havent worn earrings in a good 14 years or so. But when I wanted to wear a pair for my wedding my holes were still open...............thats what she said.

So they may never really close anyway.

  • You can always re-pierce them. I had mine close up and had them repierced. And sometimes mine close up halfway and I have to jam the earring in really hard to break the skin or membrane or whatever that's formed over the hole. It doesn't hurt.

  • But if your heart isn't in it... you're not being fair to your second piercings.  If the time has come to part ways - it just has to happen.  Life will go on.

And like LC said - if you change your mind down the road, you can take them back :)
    panther
  • They've already started closing.  I'm at the jam or not to jam phase.

This ^ I just took out all my facial piercings, and it wasn't the big decision I thought it would be, for this reason.
  • The jam or not jam phase... lol.

Cut your losses and make a clean break.  But keep their number, you know, just in case.

  • If you never wear earrings, then I don't see the harm in letting them close up. Like PP said, it's not like they're closed forever. I have 2 holes in each ear, and the last time I wore earrings was at the wedding. Before then, it had been at least 2 years and the holes were still open.
  • I always wanted my ears double pierced but it didn't happen.

Random: The ball thing fell off of my belly ring a few months ago and I didn't have time to go get a replacement so I just stuck the plastic (rubber?) back to an earring on it and then forgot about it. A few weeks ago I went to replace the ring and the earring back had hardened like a rock and I couldn't get it off! I'm such an idiot. Basically DH had to grab a pair of scissors and cut the thing off but it hurt like hell and it made me think that one thing no one ever wants to think: My mom was right.

I thought about letting it close up but after all the effort I was like, eff it, and put another one in.
  • I got a little piercing happy when I was a teen and I have three piercings in each ear with a cartilage piercing. I only wear earrings in the first piercing, but those suckers NEVER closed up.

  • I got piercing happy, too but strayed from my ears.  I really wanted an eyebrow piercing, but my mom said she wouldn't pay for college if I got an eyebrow piercing.

I took my belly ring out 4 years ago and assumed it was closed. I figured out the other day that it never closed from the top, just the bottom, and that there will more than likely always be a hole in the top of my belly button. Which is REALLY weird to me. I shudder to think what'll happen when I get KU.

I very much regret my eyebrow ring. It never healed properly, and was the only one that didn't out of my nose, ears and belly button. I have a nice little puckered scar on my eyebrow now and it makes me sad because it wasn't even my idea, but I was a doormat at 15.

Hahaha. This was me too! Except I wanted my nose pierced.

  • I miss my nose ring. Like, really bad. I had to take it out for work when I was waiting tables, and it closed up. I think I'm gonna repierce it again some time after the wedding.

  • I was in a situation similar to yours.  I got my first ear piercings when I was 8 and my 2nd set about 5 years ago.  I didn't wear them that much and over the past few months they've closed up.  Or, really one has closed up.  I'll let the other one close up as well.

I hardly wear earrings in my 1st set, so it was even less common for me to wear them in my 2nd set.  Something about 4 earrings never really screamed "professional" to me, so I would never wear them at work and I'm too lazy to put them in on the weekend.

Do you wear earrings often?  Would you be willing to go through with getting them re-pierced if they did close up?

  • I wear either some little diamond hoops H gave me when we were dating or dangly stuff, but never anything but studs in the second hole.

Have any of you gotten piercings as an adult?  I feel like that was a quintessential teenage thing for me.

  • I'd say let 'em close. as PP said, the ears are easy to get done again if you choose.
I'm still struggling with taking out my belly button ring or not. I've had it since i was 18
  • Like Mrs.Jesse, I too only have one set of holes in my ears.  One is definitely smaller than the other, but I've never had the issue of them closing up... I wear earrings ever so often, and lately, every day.

I would suggest letting them close up... You can get them done again, when it's convenient to you.

  • Well if you ever get knocked up, Nick, you can get a pregnancy belly ring.  I learned those exist from a news clip about MTV's teen pregnancy show.

  • I say let them close.

I have 3 piercings in each ear. I got the first when I was 3, the second at 15 and the third at 17. I love them, but for the last few months I've been lazy about wearing earrings. I've also noticed in the last few years that the second and third piercings get irritated/infected more easily and more often so I usually have to dip the posts of my earrings in Neosporin before inserting them. Adding that step to my morning routine has annoyed me so I just haven't been wearing them.

/shudder. I don't know how people do it. You'd think the slightest thought of it getting infected would be enough to turn people off. No pun intended.
  • A guy in college with me had a prince albert; sounded like the most painful thing I could imagine getting but he said 'chicks love it' after it was all said and done.  I figured I'd rather have less chicks than go through that lol.  I don't have any piercings or tats.  I probably would have a tat but fortunately there are laws against tattooing someone who is drunk and that saved me.

  • That would scare me. No thank you (if a guy I was dating had one).

I DO have a tattoo. I don't regret getting it; I regret the subject matter.

  • I could never get a tattoo.  It always seemed to permanent, even when I was rebelling.
