WFD/Evening thread?

Re: WFD/Evening thread?

  • Dodgers I'm reading Extremely Loud, too. I'm only about 50 pages in, and it isn't BAD, but I'm kind of disappointed. Does it get better?

[QUOTE]Hi.  I just got here and I've only read page 3. Life is way too short to suffer through 200 crappy pages just on the chance the book gets good after that.

<div>Agreed! If I'm not feeling something after about 50 pages, chances are I won't finish it.</div>

I've got The Hunger Games trilogy, Water For Elephants, The Help, and other misc books I'd be willing to swap for this. I love the movie and just re-watched it weekend before last. I love books/movies set during this time period (Dueces Wild, too).

<div>I think I do have it! It's just in our storage unit with 95% of our other belongings right now but I can get it out! • Sorry, I got on the phone. Something borrowed is like a chick book, they made a movie of it.

Also - I loved anne rice and ive read most of her books 3+ times. Most of the books I like ive read multiple times. I am pretty sure ive read gone with the wind upwards of 15 times in my life.

I'm just jumping in on this last page--I fell asleep and now N is asleep. I'm hungry.

I've read all of Anne Rice's vampire books, but not the Mayfair Witches, although everyone recommends it.  MY favorite vamp of hers was Armand, but I hated the book she made about him.
  • It still to this day annoys me how they portrayed armand in interview with the vampire. He wasnt old like antonio banderas!!! ALL WRONG!!!

  • All this tells me is that I need to read more.

Who has read Sarah's Key? I saw the movie this weekend and LOVED it (except for the fact that the subtitles were HORRIBLY translated and I spent most of the movie retranslating it properly for my DH and friend. I have no idea how it actually could have been translated that badly.
  • I've never read any of Anne Rice's work; I feel like I'm missing out.

  • LP - No rush! Feel free to PM me with your address whenever you find it, and I'll get Water For Elephants in the mail for you. :)

Lindsey - I love Scotland, it's one of my favorite places on the planet. I went there for a week in 2008, and while I know that's a very short amount of time, I fell in love. I could totally see myself living in a small cottage outside St Andrews or Stirling or Kirkaldy.

AW moment - Scotland pics (for those I haven't shown yet):

St Andrews (the beach where they filmed Chariots of Fire)

    Edinburgh, near the Royal Mile

    Fields of barley in Kilconquhar:

Path I went running on, right near the above barley fields

This cottage would suit me just fine

    Inside the Wallace Monument:

    Glencoe/The Scottish Highlands

    Loch Ness

The water in Loch Ness is so black, that even in just six inches of water, you can't see the bottom. Our tour guide told us that Loch Ness is so deep that the entire land mass of the UK could sink into it. He also said that the silt along the water's edge is very unique and the only other place in the world with silt similar to it is in New York. Not sure if he was lying or not, but I thought that was pretty cool.

I have tons more pics, but this is taking a while lol.

  • I liked Sarah's Key.  Not the best Holocaust novel I've read, but I do enjoy the structure.

  • I hated that, too. I loved how he was supposed to be this old world, too old child, who was this crazy predator.

I loved the book of The Queen of the Damned when I read it, although I was young and I've never reread it as an adult, but I despised the movie. There were way too many interlocking storylines in that one to deal with in one movie. Plus whatsherface as Akasha was fucking ridiculous. And her GD accent?!
  • I read anne rice a lot when I was young (picked up interview with the vampire when I was 11 or 12?) and I have a feeling thats why I was sorta over sexed as a teenager. I totally blame it on anne rice. Her stories sorta started to fall apart towards the end, before she started writing her jesus books. I didnt like the last 2 vampire ones she did.
  • I read Sarah's Key for my knottie book club and I read it during the plane ride to SF.  At times, I thought it was brutal, but then at other times, I couldn't wait to see what happened.

That movie was AWFUL!! the worst, the absolute worst. I complained through the entire thing because i hated it so much.

Ha, same.  Usually there was a lot of sex, but towards the end it was all blah blah drink some blood, bang it out, we are evil, drink some blood, here's my penis again.

I did the same during QOD. I was so excited to see it, too, because it was one of my favorite books, and I was just livid.
  • I want to go to Scotland.  N said we better get some traveling out of the way this year, before we TTC. I was like, Umm, get on that, moneybags.
  • As much as I dont like tom cruise, I think he made an excellent lestat. I wish they could raelly do the stories justice and make the whole series into movies.
  • I think if I ever go back, I want to check the west side of Scotland. Kinda bummed I didn't get to see Glasgow, since I spent most of the week on the east/north sides. Dunfermline Abbey where Robert the Bruce's memorial is at, Crieff where Ewan McGregor is from, Stirling Castle, and even the little town where I stayed was just so beautiful and 'homey'. I liked that if you didn't want to be around a lot of people, you didn't have to go very far to escape them. It's so not like that here in SoFlo.

    Awesome pics, Mehg!

I loved Edinburgh, I thought it felt like a fairy tale, which I know is lame, but it's true.  I just wish I could have spent more time there and gone to the highlands!

ETA:  I was not a fan of Glasgow. At all.  We might not have given it much of a chance, but it wasn't my fave.

  • Haha Nates, you crack me up. I get the same way whenever Will mentions going to Greece. I'm like "Ok, I'll start packing my bags now then".

Nebb, I agree about Tom Cruise as Lestat. He brought the right amount of sass and creepiness to the character that just felt so spot-on. For me, this was before he got super weirdo IRL. IMO, I think if they had made Interview now, though, that he would have a hard time being taken seriously in that role.
