Job Interview: Wear E-ring?

I have a job interview this afternoon. I'm debating whether or not I want to wear my e-ring. I worry that a decision might be made based on what I'm wearing on my left hand (this is illegal, but impossible to prove). Should I wear it or take it off for the interview?

The only thing I can think is that you're worried an employer might see that and think about the time you will likely want off for the wedding - is that it?

Because the flip side is that some employers like when people have families because it indicates they're more settled and less likely to quit on a whim to go backpack across Europe or something, so it's a toss up as to which kind you get.

Unless you're applying someplace where being single is something you have to pretend to be in order to get better tips, I don't think they'll care whether or not you're engaged.

I completely get why it would matter. If they notice you're engaged, they might be hesitant to hire you because you'll need time off some time this year. If they think you're married, they might assume you don't need to job as bad as someone who is single and supporting themselves.

That said, I'd wear it. I'd feel like I was lying if I didn't and I wouldn't want to hide my relationship. Whatever happens, happens. Most people probably won't even notice your ring, unless it's brand new and you flash it around and play with it a lot.

That's part of it, I worry that this potential employer might base their decision on my marital status (or future marital status). My wedding isn't for 2 years, so I'm not worried about time off (by that time, I'd have accrued enough paid vacation).

Having interview quite a few people I can tell you that I have never noticed their marital status.

I'm usually more interested in what they are saying if they can, you know, do the job and all....

Well presumably since making an employment decision based on when you're getting married is illegal, they wouldn't ask you when you're getting married to know that you wouldn't need time off sooner than that.

Do you have a specific reason for being worried about this? I feel like this wouldn't be a big concern of mine for the vast majority of jobs and companies.

Unless you're applying to be a masseuse at a massage parlor that specializes in happy endings, I fail to understand why your engagement or marital status would have anything to do with your getting hired.

</div><div>If you're really worried about it just say something. Most interviews include a moment for you to say anything you think the employer needs to know. You could very casually, even jokingly, say "And I won't even need wedding time off for a few years!"

I'm a law student and over the summer I had 10 different job interviews. For the first 5 I wore my ring. No offers.

For the second round of interviews I didn't. I got 2 offers. Now, obviously there is NO way in the world I can conclude that it was because of the no ring, but for the second round of interviews, I didn't want to give them any reason why they wouldn't hire me.

FWIW, later on I was discussing this with my fellow law friends, and they said that employers generally like married people - it shows stability and maturity.

I totally get why you would ask, I don't think it's that weird of a question. Just because it's illegal doesn't mean people don't make judgements on things like that.

That being said, I'd wear it because you'll have to wear it to work eventually, right? And do you really want to work at a place that wouldn't hire you because they assume you'll need some time off? That probably wouldn't be a very good working environment.

I had been told not to wear it to interviews at law firms. It may be illegal for them to look at marital status in deciding if you should get the job but they do. Married women are assumed to put family first, and are more likely to need maternity leave. Men on the other hand were told not to take off wedding bands, a wife is assumed to be supportive and make you more stable.

I understand the question, and it would depend on the job.

I agree, I've been wondering the same thing. If I wear it they'll think I need time off for the wedding, as well as thinking I'm a young woman who might be needing maternity time soon if I'm not married yet... I considered adding my wedding band to it for the interview so that it looks like I'm more "grown up" and settled, and not needing time off. Also, avoiding any talk of personal matters like marriage or kids is a good idea...

I probably either wouldn't wear it, or would turn it around so the band is on the outside. But I don't wear my ring all the time anyway, so I'm an oddity here I think.

Just a question, for those of you who wouldn't wear it. Would you eventually put it on some time after you got the job and pretend you'd just gotten engaged? Or if you stuck your wedding band on for the interview, how do you explain the wedding you'll have in a year or so? I'm genuinely curious, not trying to be mean.

If the stone is huge and/or flashy I would suggest not wearing it - probably too late now.

DD's former boss asks people if they have dogs. It's a perfectly legal question.

Why does she ask? If you have dog(s) you will not be hired. Dogs require someone to come and let them out and take care of them. If you have a cat it's ok, cats are independent.

She wants people to work 8:30 am to 8:30 PM EVERYNIGHT, eat lunch at your desk. Not kidding. If you have a dog you'll need to go home to let it out.

Insurance costs for a single woman are higher than for a married woman, for some strange reason, so it might be a plus for the employer, potentially, that you're soon to be married.

I would wear my ring. And if they asked a question that was potentially over the line, my response would be anywhere from the truth to "Why do you ask?" if I felt like they were delving into something that was inappropriate.
