As a wedding coordinator and a bride myself I think that you should do whatever is going to make both you and your groom happy.
Who cares what other people think! You two are the ones getting married and they are there to celebrate with you! NOT the other way around.
I hope that you have a wonderful wedding and just remember to enjoy yourself.
NOT everyone knows what you and your fiance want so go with what makes you HAPPY!

    CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I am assuming that they will be cooking the BBQ outside, so "the smell" should not be a problem. I mean duh! Who cooks BBQ inside? You will be fine! I would even suggest mixing it up...like Thai ribs with sesame seeds and grilled kabobs with fancy and colorful veggies. It would be healyth and presentable all at the same time!

in my opinion if you want bbq, eat bbq. also if your friends and family understand you on the level they think, then if you are a laid back chill person, it will be something more or less expected. a bbq is really relaxing and your guests will feel relaxed and i think everything will go smoother.

I believe we are planning the same wedding?!  We are getting married around 5pm in October on a golf course overlooking the lake.  Our reception, however, will be held in a pavilion outside of the club house.  My fiance grew up in Mississippi and wants BBQ at our reception...problem is we live in Upstate NY now and are having a hard time finding a caterer that does good BBQ.  I say go for it!  I've never had "real" BBQ, as he would call it, but am all for the idea of casual comfort food at our reception.  I will not give up on finding somebody to make the food that we both want!!

If you want BBQ,  get BBQ!  I don't think its tacky at all.  I actually went to a wedding a couple years ago that served BBQ and it was inside and probably started at 4 or so.  It was great!

I have been to two weddings that had BBQ for the reception and it was not tacky at all.  They had chicken and pulled pork (all edible with utensils) with green beans, baked beans, etc.  Everyone loved the food!! I plan on doing the same for my own wedding, with the help of my FH's Godparents who own a BBQ catering business.  It's your day. Enjoy it and eat what you want!!!!

Go for it.  This is your time to express yourselves as a couple.  Don't worry about the rest of the world.  Besides, the best receptions are a celebration, not a stuffy, formal dinner.
We are having a carnival themed reception.  We will wear our wedding attire for photo ops, then change into shorts an tennis shoes to play on the inflatables.  Some people have made it clear that they think it is tacky.  (They're nice enough to say 'non-traditional', but the look on their faces says 'tacky')  But our guests are going to have a blast and remember it for years.  I'd rather have that then follow the rules and have a banquet hall with flower arrangements and a buffet. BORING!  (Unless that's what you love.  In which case, go for it!)

I am having an evening reception. Its not going to formal but not casual either. Somewhere in between. We are having it in a pavillion overlooking the lake. And we are also have a barbque dinner. Everybody thinks its a great idea. We all know its food we like and since I am having a summer wedding it will give it a nice summery bbq feel. I love it.

Not tacky at all.  We are doing a pig roast at our wedding and everyone who is coming cannot wait!!!!!  Tell your friends/family to back off and live a little!!!!!!  Eat what you want.  Everyone will remember how you had this great BBQ instead of mediocre beef/chicken and potatoes that so many weddings provide.

I think everyone likes a good BBQ. If that's what you guys like, dont change who you are for formality's sake. Serve people BBQ and enjoy it yourselves!! :)
