Do you like bouquet tosses?

I am curious because the topic has come up in two posts today, and it seems like no one likes them (I don't like them), so if that's the case I wonder why some brides insist that they are an essential part of wedding fun.

Re: Do you like bouquet tosses?

  • I do not like them.  I didn't do a bouquet toss or the garter thing.

  • I did one at my wedding, but we excluded the whole "put the garter on the person who catches the bouquet" thing.  It was very tame.  My sister caught the bouquet (I threw it right at her).

  • I voted special snowflake, because I will always vote that when its an option.

No, though, I don't like them.  I find them awkward.  I especially don't like when I'm hiding in the bathroom to avoid it, and FMIL pulls me out of the bathroom.
  • People who are voting special snowflake, care to explain what the eff you mean by that? I am not creative enough to really understand how there can be more answers than "yes" and "no," I just added that option since there are always exceptions.
  • I hate it.  I hated it more when I was single because everyone would try to force me to go catch the boquet.  I always stood as far back as possible and actively tried not to catch it.  Now I don't care one way or the other because I don't have to be involved.
  • No. We did not do tosses. I only had one person mention it, and it was more like an observation, not a complaint. I'm SO glad no one looks at me or forces me up to the dance floor now at other weddings when the bouquet toss is announced. One of the major benefits of marriage, for sure. Wink

We'll be doing both the garter and bouquet tosses at our wedding, but they are pretty much expected in our circle of family/friends...

I don't really care either way, though (hence my special snowflake vote - I don't like or dislike them). I definitely don't think they're essential to a wedding, and come to think of it, the last wedding I attended, I don't believe either was done.
  • I don't mind them, really, but I didn't do one because there was ONE single woman at our wedding, and she was my MOH anyway. :)
  • I don't like them but peple requested it so we did it.

I think they are awkward as hell and I avoided them like the plague when I was single.
  • I voted no. I find them entertaining but have always felt really awkward having to be singled out as a "single girl.' Since I've been engaged I've happily been sitting them out.

  • Hate them, and I voted "special snowflake" to be a pain in the arse.

I guess there can be a happy medium, like, "as long as I'm not involved" or "as long as there's no raunchy garter toss follow-up." But personally, I don't like what it represents, either. Like I should be absolutely dying to catch the bouquet so I don't turn into a dried up old spinster. Yes, for sure, catching a man was the main goal/highlight of my life. *eyeroll*

  • I picked it for the reason I stated above.

I don't mind the bouquet toss.  I dislike the way that they do the garter toss and then the guy who catches the garter has to put it on the girl who catches the bouquet.  Every wedding I've been to, it's never done tastefully, it's always skeezy and awkward.  So we omitted that whole thing.  My sister caught the bouquet and that was that.

  • I am really weird about them because I have been to a few weddings where no one wanted to catch the bouquet so I did so because I didn't want it to hit the floor. I certainly would not miss one if it is not at a wedding.

I told the florist I didn't need a toss bouquet and she told me I was very mature for my age.

I hate them.  We didn't do one, although it'd be almost pointless at my wedding, there were so few single women there, I could have just handed the bouquet to one of the two of them.
  • Not fan and didn't have one.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I was at a wedding where it hit the ground. NO ONE wanted to participate and H (who was BF at the time) and one of his friends told me to go up there because there were like 50 people or less at the wedding. Meaning there were about 7-8 women standing there. And it fell in the middle of the circle we had formed. Someone picked it up and waved it around, but we all groaned about having to do it.

  • I don't like them but we did them anyway to appease our guests who wouldn't leave us alone about them.  It was actually pretty funny though - all the woman ran (viciously) for the bouquet and all the guys parted like the Red Sea when H threw the garter lol. It was pretty hilarious.  My gay bridesman was actually the one who caught it.

  • I didn't even think about the raunchy follow-up - I don't think I've ever seen that in person.

I don't care about the symbolism and don't even really mind the singling out of the single women, I just feel like usually the party's going great, and then we have to stop the music and the dancing and all the fun to have this awkward bouquet/garter time, and then the music restarts and we're told to get back to the party and the dancing as if that little interlude had never happened
  • I think it would just be super sad and a little disappointing for the bride to see it hit the floor.

  • I hate them. At my friends wedding it was tossed it right to me and her husband tossed the garter to my FI (BF at the time) and they played a skeevy song for him to put it on. We were good sports but mortified...my parents were there!

I like them. But then again I have never been single at a wedding. I can imagine it would be a sore spot for someone newly single or going through a rough breakup.

We're both throwing our bouquets, but we are not excluding married ladies. We're having all ladies participate if they wish. We also have a few male friends who are excited to participate as well.

As for the garter toss, I've always cringed a bit when I see it. But maybe I'm just a prude.

  • I don't like bouquet tosses.  The last wedding I was at, the DJ made a big deal that unless you had a wedding ring on your finger, you should be going for the bouquet (engaged, long-term relationship didn't matter).  To me, that kind of fails to recognize that not everyone thinks marriage is all that.

I like the bouquet toss, but HATE the garter toss with a passion!  I have *never* seen it done tastefully.  I think of the bouquet toss as more innocent.  The garter thing is always done in a very raunchy, gross way that kind of ruins it.

ETA: We didn't do the bouquet toss.  I think as you get older, people start to resent having to announce their single status by being showcased.  I would have liked to do it, by my MOH hates it and Id idn't want her to feel awkward at the wedding.  I always think of the bouquet/garter stuff as being done at really young weddings (like under 25).
