Minnesota-Minneapolis and St. Paul

I know everyone loves _______, but I hate it!

I came up with a fun conversation starter. A little snarky, perhaps, but harmless :-)

When I was planning my wedding, I got all sorts of suggestions from people that had their basis in well-recognized bridal trends... and it was always kind of difficult to tactfully explain that I wasn't a fan. It was just like people's reactions to the fact that I've always hated the band U2. They either get personally offended OR have a hard time understanding why I could possibly dislike such a classic.

So, in the world of weddings... what's the one thing that everyone else loves but you can't stand? Bonus points if you tell us why!

    Tulle!

I just can't stand it.  It's way overdone & to foofy for me.  I think it can tend to cheapen things also.

I know everyone loves a dress with a litte color (like a sash).  But I think dresses with color are fugly.  I'd rather just have a beautiful colored bouquet.

I don't know if everyone loves them but alot of people use them....

    Aisle runners.

I don't know, I just think they are pointless.  Half the time they look like crap because they don't get laid down flat or they are crooked.  Or the people laying it down can't get it right and it takes forever.

Although, the aisle runners that people make on here look really cool and I can appreciate the look of them....I just don't get them?!  lol

The show bridezillas... I think it gives every woman who plans a wedding a bad name.  I cannot stand hearing "don't be one of those bridezillas"..

Kayla - I feel the same way.  We only have one because our church is making us, if the flower girls drop anything.  But, I don't see the point either!

    Ashlee - 100% agree.

Really?? Our pastor was so happy we weren't using one!  Although, I must admit that at the beginning of the planning process I purchased one.  I quickly realized I thought they were stupid :) and it sat in my basement!

Seriously?!  Our church is so picky about everything!  We also have a carpeted aisle, so maybe that's why... Don't know.  I just bought it cuz they told me I needed one!!

I'm loving the responses so far :-)

Since I started the thread, I suppose I should do one of my own:

    Strapless Wedding Dresses

Er, well... not the dresses themselves... just this recent notion that strapless dresses are more "classic" and "timeless." I'm sorry, but until about 10 years ago, they weren't even popular. They had a surge in the 50s, and again in recent times.
They're pretty, but they're not the be-all-end-all of wedding fashion. In fact, they look supremely awful on some women.

I was just so surprised by how everyone reacted to my dress (it had a long-sleeved lace jacket overlay). I got so many "that's sooo unique!" and "I've never seen anything like it before!" when in reality, it's a MUCH older, more traditional dress style than the 'standard' strapless.

Hm our church said we needed an aisle runner and we have tile flooring- although I think it will "gussy" it up a bit to have that with our monogram painted on there.(since I am lazy about decorations in the church/in general.) So I am not sure why we needed one?

I strongly dislike: head tables. I get it, you are the all important group of people that day and people must be split up from their dates just to sit by you. I am introverted and hate sitting by myself at a wedding while FI is sitting at the head table.

oh, I also hate/dislike the unity part of the ceremony. Personally, I just didn't see how pouring sand into another beaker would make me feel more united with FI/DH. So I decided not to do one.

I WAS JUST GOING TO SAY THIS ONE! I'm sorry but strapless dresses are flattering on like 1 out of every 70 people and I would be so annoyed with my dress either being super tight to stay up or having to keep pulling it up all day!

This.  We opted out of the unity candle.  It would just end up in a box somewhere.  No thank you.

I also don't get preserving a wedding dress.  I plan to donate mine to charity to let someone else get a good use out of it rather than just keep it in a closet.

I so agree.  I don't get the cupcake trend, and cupcakes are hard to eat and not be messy (unless forks and plates are provided, then it's better).

And one of my own... cash bars!  I'm ok with a few select provided drinks, though.  Back home cash bars were almost unheard of.  If you couldn't afford to host at least some alcohol, you just didn't provide alcohol.  Every wedding I've been to in MN has had cash bars, and it kind of irks me.

I'll throw in a few more:

    - All-white bridal bouquets (Blecch! Boring!)

    - Overly ornate wedding cakes (and yes, like 95% of wedding cakes fall into the 'overly ornate' category in my opinion.)

    - Sweetheart Tables (seriously, you're the frigging bride and groom. Stop trying to hide in a corner.)

<div>Ditto maybe and legg!  Everyone is entitled to their own style, but seriously the trend is so pervasive that it is extremely difficult to find even a hint of variety to choose from in the non-strapless variety.  That really annoyed the crap out of me when I was shopping around.  I also hated when shops would try make up for that by suggesting all sorts of alterations and add-ons to dresses that were already overprice to begin with.  Yeah, my budget is not really up for redesigning a brand new dress!</div><div>
</div><div>Whew, that was a good vent!  I'm also kinda over the whole mustache thing.  It was unique and cute at first, but they are everywhere now!</div><div>

    Get out of my head!

That's why I despise Buttercream.  I wanted simple cake tiers with no decoration so we could have orchids coming down one side and he kept trying to talk me into a more complicated (ie ugly) design.

I'm not a fan of traditional cake whatsoever, I hate frosting, fondant almost never tastes good... which is why we're having all of our cakes and what not from Muddy Paws :)
