[QUOTE]This isn't a food, but we have  Cheerwine  (clicky). and Bojangles and  Krispy Kreme And you can't come to North Carolina without eating some barbecue: (or mac and cheese or biscuits or collards) North Carolina has Eastern and Western barbecue - Western has a ketchup based sauce and Easter has a Vinegar base. We've also given the world Pepsi, Hardee's, Texas Pete, and Mount Olive Pickles.

Small world again!! I donKt drink soda, but I have the occasional Cheerwine ;) I moved to NY from Concord, NC!
  • Whoopie pies!  They're really popular in Maine and much of New England, but apparently not everywhere.  FI's previous workplace ordered a giant platter of them for a sales meeting, and they were hardly touched because nobody knew what they were.  When someone announced to his department that there was a big platter of whoopie pies left in the kitchen, half of them hadn't heard of a whoopie pie either.

Traditionally they're two little chocolate cakes with vanilla frosting in the middle, but people often make pumpkin and gingerbread versions with cream cheese frosting, or do peanut butter frosting instead.  So yummy when they're homemade, but the store ones usually taste like hockey pucks and lard, haha.

<div>This is so funny! :) I seriously love Cooperstown though. My grandparent's house is on main street, really close to the library/across the street from the baseball hall of fame. It's so idyllic. </div><div>
</div><div>And Cheerwine should be the exception to<em> anyone's </em>rule! We accidentally requested it in Virginia (at a Wendy's) one time years ago and they were super confused and were like, we don't sell alcohol here.</div>

I didn't put one on our registry because really, who needs one?  But I'm hoping someone gets us one as a "surprise" gift.  Maybe someday :)

<div>Did you hear that PA is going to "war" with Maine over whoopie pies? Apparently Maine wanted to make whoopie pies the offiicial treat of Maine, and people in PA actually protested stating that PA was the original whoopie maker, and therefore, Maine did not that have the right to make anything "official."</div><div>

Actually, Maine was attempting to make Whoopie Pies the state dessert, but the debacle started when PA claimed that they had originally come from Amish immigrants to ME, which obvoiusly couldn't be proven with any kind of paperwork.  Then it got even more complicated when a place in Massachusetts claimed that THEY had made the Whoopie Pie first, and it had moved both north and south in popularity :)

Maine ended up making Whoopie Pies the official state treat, not dessert; that was later decided to be Wild Maine Blueberry pie.  Not a clue what the difference is!

Seriously bizarro though - why on earth can't two states declare the same "official state dessert" based on what's known and popular in the area?

Kelsey +brandon and littleluckypenn: Really small world! I am orginally from Oneonta and my mom worked at the Farmers museum and the Art museum growing up so I was in Cooperstown all the time! I loved it! And I LOVEEEE Fly Creek. Like to the point my parents still bring me apples and apple cider every time they come visit ESPECIALLY if in season and something else equally yummy if its not.

Also kks4471 and L&J2012 I went to school at University of Rochester. And yes I indulged in garbage plates (only once or twice not drunk). They are the best drunk food EVER, every unhealthy greasy thing you want at that moment. But besides that there is not much appeal unless you want a TON of calories. Back then I didnt care as much, but now definatly dont think I could finish one on my own even if I was drunk!

  • I think breakfast tacos are a local thing. Bill Miller's (local bbq fast food place)makes the best potato, egg and cheese tacos! Green chilies are more of a New Mexico food, but I love them. Especially on a chicken fried steak with a slice of cheese on top.
