Mery, what if people take sick leave for their appointments? Do you still think they shouldn't take a lunch break? I am probably the only person in my office that doesn't eat lunch at my desk and I don't feel guilty about it at all. We technically get an hour for lunch and I am never gone more than 30 minutes anyway. Years of working in real archives made me too scared to eat around documents so that is my excuse.
    Posted by annakb8
I don't, personally. And we do have to use PTO for things like that. I'm hourly and I'll just use 2 hours PTO or whatever (though I schedule my appts for the end of the day so I only have to leave 60-90 minutes early and so I don't have to come back), and I'm pretty sure everyone has to use PTO because it's policy. But the point is the work that's not getting done. When I go on vacation, I bust my ass before I leave to make sure my work is done. I have no idea what these people do that they can fit their work into 3-4 hours a day, but hey, maybe we don't need them and I can get a raise, you know? That's where the perception of how well you're doing your job comes in. If you never need to be at work, you either don't have that much work or you're not doing it.

And I do take a 1 hour lunch break every day that I have to clock out for (hourly, again). Sometimes I sit at my desk and knot or read, sometimes I run errands or go get a sandwich. Except today I think they're being more than fair by basically telling us to not work for 2 hours and giving us free food - plus I hope the party wraps early and we can leave at 5!

One of my coworkers just went to buy grilled cheese from a lunch truck that's a good 20 minutes away. *eyeroll*
Winter coats are necessary. ;) H had a total breakdown over the weekend because he's so upset over our money situation. He said that he didn't know why I stayed with him because things have been so rough. Poor guy. I snuggled him for a long time after that. He's just really depressed.

I'm sorry, but I know the feeling. At the beginning of this semester FI found out he lost his financial aid at school and thought he was going to have to take a semester or two off to save up to pay for school. He nearly lost it. FI said that he thought he would drop out completely and that I would leave him because he would become a bum. I ended up telling him that I would marry him in the courthouse over Christmas if something didn't change, and that way we could be poor together and he would get a Pell Grant. HA! I the end FI ended up with a private loan.

My rant / confession: I feel dumb because I can't figure out how to put a pic in my siggy. FAIL :(

I think they're just moving to a new apartment. Their current one was cute, but it was too small for them.

ETA - she also has about a 90 minute commute, so they might be splitting the distance.
Aw, Snippy, I'm sorry your H feels that way. I know mine feels bad too and has said to me he doesn't know why I'm with him sometimes. But then he won't e-mail some guy to follow up on a job and I have to bug him about it and that makes me feel like a bitch.
    Posted by FutureMrsTR
OMG these things happen to me with H too. He's a horrible procrastinator, especially with bills etc. And I always feel like a B when I have to say "did you call them?" "Did you pay this?" "Why did I get a thing in the mail for a parking ticket that was $20 and is now $72?" When he still worked at his old job where he drove and sometimes got tagged for expired meters, he ended up having to pay 3x the original amounts because he didn't pay when he got them. This last one, he did actually mail a check when it was 2x as much as original ticket, buuuut apparently they never got it and since he keeps NO tabs on his personal account, never knew it didn't get cashed, so now it's $72 AND it went to collections...in MY name. I'm like OMG don't you get that these things can screw us over later in life credit-wise? Quit screwing this $hit up!!!!!

I get really mad. Because it makes me feel like a B and like I'm his mom. Rant over.

  • Mery, that makes sense to be annoyed, especially if they might not be getting work done. Since I have only really had jobs doing archiving I don't have a very good sense of job urgency. Papers that have been sitting around for 50 years already are going to be ok if it takes me another couple minutes to get to them. Especially if it is a collection that will not likely be used soon. And if I was hourly you bet I would take every single second of my hour long break.

Sorry I am confusing everyone. I'm not sure who Rach is but now I am curious what she looks like.
  • My vent is my husband didn't want a piece of caramel pie from O'Charley's last night and now I have to share mine with him b/c he wants some. I really wanted a whole piece.

    This!

Pirata, I had a friend who had to leave her car in valet at work sometimes. Well, the valet said, "So, you might have gotten a ticket. If you did, we'll pay it." It took her like 2 months to stop being lazy and give it to the valet stand, and by that time it had doubled (doubles after 1 month here). I was like, "Uh, they aren't going to pay your now-$150 ticket because you were lazy about it. You needed to pay it and get reimbursed. They're only going to give you $75."

She's like that, though. She's the one who flaked on being in my wedding. But was in her brother's fake wedding on Sunday and was all excited about it.

The thing is we were getting a free meal last night b/c the waitress spilled wine on us, didn't give us silverware for awhile, the fish my H ordered was raw, the waitress rolled her eyes at him when he asked her to take it back, they were out of 1000 island dressing, and baked potatoes. So, the manager said anything we wanted was free, so we all ordered desserts with the exception of my husband because he was pouting. That caramel pie is to die for. I recommend getting it!

Actually, that reminds me. When I worked at Starbucks, my store had Christmas off. I noticed today that they'll be open on Christmas day. Which sucks, but at least they give time and a half and people are allowed to take vacation that week. Unlike another job I had where there was about a 2.5 month block (twice a year) where you weren't allowed to request time off. Which may or may not be illegal in CA. But non-compete clauses are also illegal in CA and my current company has one.
