I think there`s been MUCH more of a fuss made over how others shouldn`t be offended than about the original comment ladies! I read the posts again and there was... drumroll please... TWO COMMENTS about how the posters were offended. In a total of 38ish comments, I don`t think this was over the top OR out of place. There has to be at least 6+ comments in this thread about how no one should have ever been offended. Making a mountain out of a molehill? And no, using the "oooh we all grew up differently" was not my excuse for them being offended. I was using it as a reference to prove my point. BTW, how is it fair that you all should be free to share your opinion on people being offended by this subject, but for those 2 posters to be pointed out for having genuine feelings and opinions as well? Why is one fine, and the other not? Makes no sense.
    Posted by rasp.berry
I never said it wasn't fine for them to talk about how they felt about it. I just personally feel that they overreacted in thinking her post was offensive. And I used that to make a commentary that people choose to be offended over nothing a lot lately. Honestly, I think everyone does it.
I'd be lying if I said I never did it. But jsut because you had a bad experience with something in you rpast doesn't warrant you being upset with a comment that is sort of related to that thing, but is taken completely out of context.

JMHO and adding my two cents. I don't think it makes them crazy or bad pepole. I just think overall, as a society, we freak out if someone says something that can be construed as non-PC out of context because ZOMG she put the words "hair" and " 'normal' " together!!
  • Public forum, ladies, always exciting! Hahaha FWIW If I had to try and consider what Johnny may have said to Jane when she was 6 so as not to possibly offend her by saying something that usually wouldn't be offensive when I was talking to Jane, I think I'd become a mute. Which some people may prefer! :D
In Response to Re: "Normal" hair comment... : But honestly, given the whole "ooh we all grew up differently", then anyone is allowed to be offended by anything. For example: My dad and I have a horribly shitty relationship. based on your argument, I'm allowed to be offended anytime someone talks about or shows their good relationship with their dad. Or as someone who has never officially been plsu sized but has struggled with her weight since she could remember, someone else who is heavier than me could be offended when I say I'd love to lose weight. To me, offensive comes from the tone/meaning, not necessarily from the words. IF the original post didn't put "normal" in " ", yeah I could see where it sounds like she's saying normal as in normal, not normal as in hairtype. But she put it in quotes. But now we're just arguing semantics

And this is why when my grandma was younger she got in trouble for calling the mailman "an old buck eye." It wasn't what she said, but how she said it. The OP in the original "offensive" comment didn't mean any malice. She was trying to be helpful and people CHOSE to be offended by it.

And I agree with Shannon. People on this board need to grow up and get over themselves or stop posting on a public forum where EVERYONE has different backgrounds and life experiences.

To all those who think I was overreacting:

That is your opinion. And I truly don't care if you think I was. No, it is not wedding stress. No I do not get offended for every little thing. Nor do I think of the person who wrote it as racist, nor do I think any of you are. As rasp.berry said (and thank you for your words), people have different experiences. Just like how no one who is white will ever know what it is to be black, I will never know how it is to be white. There are certain things and experiences that will make me think twice about certain actions or speech, just like it will for you.

I'm not trying to make this into a black/white thing, but it pretty obvious that there will be two sides of this issue, more than likely because of our racial differences.

Anyone who wants to read "Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black America" will gladly see my point of speaking up to OP.

I have accepted her apology and explanation. Move on. I know I have.

See, I knew this was going to explode.

I HATE HATE HATE when things that have NOTHING to do with race get turned into a race issue. My hair isn't normal and I'm white. My hair is frizzy as hell and wavy. I have to use frizz free shampoo, frizz free spray and I straighten my hair every day. Was I offended by the "normal" hair comment? No, because I'm an adult.

I could choose to get offended by all kinds of things I've seen here based on the "background" argument. Examples:

    1) Anyone who's atheist.
    2) Anyone who doesn't like cats
    3) Anyone with 20/20 vision
    4) Anyone with a "normal" back (oh gosh, am I allowed to use that word?)

See how ridiculous this could get?
  • I love you so hard Midgie. And I do like cats but I'm so allergic to them :( Doesn't stop me from cuddling my parents fluffy ball though!

I'm always late to the party. Idk, I've watched a lot of Oprah and hair always seemed to be a big deal for her, so I can't say I'm shocked people were hurt by the "normal" comment. I really have no opinion either way on this one, I think I just wanted to talk about Oprah because she's so awesome.

If you would actually take a second and read the original thread you will see that rasp.berry never commented saying she was offended by the post. If you would take the time to read her previous posts on this thread you will see that see that she says she's not offended, but also thinks that it's unfair for others to say to the poster that was offended by the comment that she shouldn't be offended or is blowing it out of proportion.

  • Wait...white people can have frizzy hair?! Mind blown. Except not at all because this isn't a race issue. Saying that it is is just perpetuating any race issues that could conceivably still exist. And clearly, based on this thread, NOT being offended about this comment is what' is "normal.". Again, based on this thread, which is only a tiny piece of the June 2012 brides who are even ON TK let alone all the other brides in the world, or ya know, like, the whole world. See the point?!
  • Hell yes, white people have frizzy hair! I am with Midge on this one, frizzy as all get out.

Also, this post reminds me of one of my favorite sayings, I should attach it to my siggy later.

"Oh, I offended you with my opinion? You should hear the ones I keep my to myself."

Just for the record, yes you do offend me. lol. JK

    But seriously..
After reading all of the posts and getting mostly bored and getting a head ache this has all made me realize a few important things.

    1. This is a public forum, EVERYONE can see it. Even creeps. Google your username and see what happens. Great, huh?
    2. This is a public forum. We are all entitled to our own opinions.
    3. This is a public forum. We all come from different backgrounds, races, etc.

I feel like some of the people on this forum do get offended. I also do no feel like this public apology was necessary, however a wonderful idea for OP to do it. If you don't want to be offended in some form, then don't post on a public forum? JMHO.

    WOAH!
There is absolutely NO NEED TO BASH her because she is a Christian. Just because she is a Christian DOES NOT MEAN that she doesn't have an opionion or that she has to keep her mouth shut!
