[QUOTE]In Response to Re: FFF : Exactly.  I used to live in Santa Monica and didn't exactly have $800K to shell out for a 2bd condo.  Now I live in Brookline and own a condo, but it makes me sick when I see how much house I could have bought in most of the country for the amount I paid for a 900 sq. ft condo.  Not everyone can afford and sometimes it isn't the right time.  A lot of my friends and I don't know where we'll be living year to year, so no, buying a home isn't the best idea for a lot of people.  You should be able to rent a place that is well-maintained and safe.

Yup, we also might be moving next year so I can go to grad school full time. So now would be a poor time to buy something, regardless of whether or not we had a down payment. But frankly, our "extra" money is going towards a wedding right now, which is more important to us. There will be time to save for a house after that.

But there's a bank-owned foreclosure down the street from me that's been vacant for 2 years and is now going for the bargain basement price of $650,000. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-undecided.gif" border="0" alt="Undecided" title="Undecided" /> Ten times what my parents paid for their first house in upstate NY in 1983.

  • I think you're entirely missing the point of Trash The Dress if you're buying a second dress for it. The point of TDD is to get awesome, unique pictures in YOUR wedding dress, because you will never, ever wear the dress again. It's part artistic, part symbolic. Buying a second dress to wear for pictures is part a waste of money, part  unbelievably self-involved.

It is - I walk by it a lot. There's at least one broken window. Probably someone broke into it. All the landscaping has to be redone. No idea what kind of condition the electric system or plumbing is in. Thankfully, it doesn't freeze here, so the pipes haven't burst. It's not a very good layout, either - 4 bedrooms in a 1400 square foot, one story house = choppy looking. But this is also in a neighborhood where a good price is usually $800k and most houses are more like a million, for 2-3 bedrooms. I can afford to rent there and I love it, but never in a million years could we afford to buy here.

    And now I will drop the renting thing. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif" border="0" alt="Laughing" title="Laughing" />

    That sounds amazing!

There hasn't been a single family home on the market in Brookline for under $1 million in 5 years (probably longer, that's just how long I've been looking).  Actually, two just went on the market on my street for $600K and they are both total dumps that would need to be gutted.

I've never been to TN but I imagine it's beautiful! That house my parents bought in 1983 for 65k is probably worth about 185k today. Still not too bad!

I know. I don't know how the average person affords houses here. They release data a lot that says, "in order to afford a house in LA County, you need to be making 6.5 times the national average." *gulp*

  • I got a second dress for our TTD.  My mom paid for my actual wedding dress, and she didn't want me wearing it into the water.  Since she paid for it, I didn't want to go against her wishes, but I wanted pictures in the water.  If I had paid for the dress myself, I would have worn it for sure.  I got a used dress from another bride for $25.  I don't really see the big deal.  If that makes me a pretend, self-involved wannabe fashion model, so be it.
